Not sure if she is honest with herself. Having been in a similar situation, I knew that alcohol gave my husband more joy than I could. I kind of looked at alcohol as his mistress. Carly liked James when he was drinking, but it was the alcohol that changed his mood, not his love for Carly. How I wished that my husband looked forward to seeing me after work as much as he anticipated that first drink. We talked about it and he recognized it, he once asked me “ do you think I like being like this?” I answered “yes “.

Carly relates so well about her relationship with James Taylor. The sense of messiness, misunderstanding, confusion, needs/desires, failures, stubbornness, regrets. It’s very much too bad addictions interfered with their lives, undoubtedly their children’s lives as well. And time passes, people move on and that time together is history. They both gave us such wonderful music, together and separately, grateful for that.

They share children and grandchildren, which should be enough to at least have some friendly contact with each other at the very least. I recently watched some video of Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz in the 1980s, playing in the pool with their first grandchild. They were obviously delighted with the little one, and it was also obvious that the two of them still had a great deal of affection for one another, despite being married to other people.

I read her book a while back and saw this complete interview. Heart on her sleeve like me. I remember when they married, it was a big deal. When her marriage was failing with James, she wrote about the moment she was to confront his mistress at his other apartment. My heart broke for her and I know exactly how it feels to love someone who doesn't love you back the same and cheats. (All the things they should give you go to someone else). I can relate to Carly and having that feeling of needing to be connected to people in that way. She even felt bad for Joni later after James left her and was with Carly. I have been with two men who are alcoholics and they are impossible to be with. I am myself a recovered alcoholic for well over 3 decades now. But it still doesn't make the journey with an alcoholic any easier, knowing all about being there. It is sad that he won't relent and just get over it and visit her and their son.

I have always liked JT's music, and I gained a great deal of respect for him as a person when my brother told me about meeting him. My brother was a chef, and he prepared the meal for JT's band when they were doing a concert in my brother's city. After the meal was served, JT came back to the kitchen and personally thanked each of the kitchen crew for a great dinner. That a notable star would take the time to thank people that are never recognized says something great about who that person is.

@@Belfastboi Thank you for the bitterness and insult. A point that seems to fly over your head is that the reason I have respect for this gesture is that people who travel with entourages, press agents, groupies, and support staff tend to live in an entitlement bubble. It is rare that they step OFF the pedestal. I am not elevating JT because he was gracious. I am simply acknowledging an action that demonstrated he is not a self absorbed prick, and his action brought joy to several people who rarely experience it. He went out of his way to do so, and it was unexpected and appreciated. When was the last time you attended a catered diner and afterwards went out of your way to go back to the kitchen and thank the staff?

Dan surprised me here by how well he conducted this interview. He very gracefully invited her to "go there" despite not really wanting to at first. I was very surprised hearing at the end of this clip that she still loves him... and that was painful or me to see and hear. I have not read any biographical books on her or Taylor. But somehow I thought she'd gone on to remarry. They are both music gods in my book. And these kinds of creative couples, I mean real musicians and songwriters, not today's hip hop formulaic crap, just often meet this fate where tangled spirits and energies end up not meshing. Musically, James Taylor's music to me goes way back in time, is timebound, nostalgiac, and for me never provokes new thoughts or emotions; just recalling how I experienced them when initially released. . I still throw an edge to Carly because her songs were ambitious, mysterious, always so beautifully produced and from a new point of view. So for me more interesting musically. I also feel that her catalogue is less timebound by era, and I can re-experience her songs as fresh, as though recorded last week.

Interesting point about JT‘s music being time bound and hers being more ambitious and still fresh over time. It does feel like in some ways that so much of his power was about honestly and simply expressing some of the dark sides of life and hers more about potential and possibility. Thanks for helping me to recognize that consciously, very interesting. And I can also see that as one of the underlying dynamics that could be pretty hard to reconcile. Perhaps she wanted to move forward in relationship and in life, and he really needed to just be where he was.
@quicksite
@quicksite 2 года назад
@@DanielBarberMusic Your thoughts are equally stimulating: "JT honestly and simply expressing some of the dark sides of life and hers more about potential and possibility." That's a completely separate paradigm and fascinating to contemplate. "Pretty hard to reconcile: perhaps she wanted to move forward in relationship and in life, and he really needed to just be where he was." ... You're getting at levels that are beyond my knowledge of the two of them. I don't have any idea how self-actualized or comfortable with therapy James has been or is - maybe quite a lot and I just have no info on that. Carly has always seemed like someone constantly aware of her feelings and personal growth.

If you would become willing to trust Him with it all, and by Him I mean Jesus, He will bring you to a new promised land. Might take a long time, but the journey is worth it. When Jesus said, "I AM the Way the Truth, and the Life," that was God speaking. Jesus has to be our life, not a person. No person has the capacity to be the lifesource for another. Only the creator can handle that. (God is a Trinity - Father, Son and Holy Spirit, but Jesus is included. When you see Him as He truly is, God in the flesh, it opens your eyes.)

@@CatherineSTodd I don't think its unusual. It may be popular at the moment to say men and women are alike but in reality men are usually not as emotional as women. And some men are less emotional than others. So there are men who seem very cold and unfeeling. That does not mean they have any kind of disease or disorder. Just as a drama queen is not neccesarily psychotic or abnormal. Some people are demonstrative. Others are reserved. I could not be comfortable with anyone I felt was smothering. Im not demonstrative and would never last with someone who was. I'm remembering a guy who seemed overly affectionate and its creeping me out!

@@deniseshore9637 Welp, affectionate is one thing, but overly clingy and needy is quite another! That would creep me out as well. Even in friendships there should be healthy give and take. Too much over reaching can leave the other feeling resentful and drained. My late husband and I were truly best friends who always had each other's backs. But we weren't glued at the hip, and didn't just smother each other emotionally. Nope, that kinda thing would wear me thin pretty quick!

You referring to Taylor now or your husband, your tone is saying...your husband.

I understand her feelings. Women feel emotions in a different way. I know how drugs or alcohol can destroy relations. Love is difficult it’s plain to see she still loves him and I believe James also, but he doesn’t want to face it. Life goes on, he’s married another woman, no drugs , no alcohol, but real love is always deep down inside of you.

He is too much of a gentleman To tell his side of the story. Carly had quite a colorful past BEFORE she met Taylor.There is always the other story.Simon has her demons.

@@doniellestenson3502 That's an interesting point. She has talked a lot about him and their marriage in many interviews. He has not talked about it, at all. I have heard him asked about her in interviews, and he never has anything bad to say about her. In fact, in one really great interview a few years ago, he laid all the blame for their failed marriage on himself, and left it at that.

Donielle, the 60s and 70s were freer times and we all had a past. I married an alcoholic but I'd rather have been in prison! His family took 2 decades to realise it after initially informing them in 1982!!!! In academic circles here in Ireland, it's tolerated as a tolerant amusement and duck the wife and children!!!

@@PerthTowne she talked a lot about het own demons and this part was about how it was to live with a drugs- and alcohol addiction. James also told many times it wasn’t the time to be proud of, although I must admit he wrote wonderful songs alone and with Carly. They were into it together. That’s what they never denied.

@@doniellestenson3502 Can you share more? I like and dislike her at the same time. Hard to believe she did not have a charmed life considering how wealthy and powerful her dad was.

Still amazing after all these years. Just listening to her music made me think I knew her on a personal level. Seeing this makes me understand : Hell it's still there. One Great Lady. She once said that she would never kick herself out of bed. Well that makes two of us.
