Aria from Act I from Bizet's "Carmen." Elina Garanca (Carmen). Conductor: Yannick Nézet-Séguin. Production: Richard Eyre (2009). From the 2010 Live in HD transmission.
I think this singer is a good example of a high pitch with large resonance. To my completely untrained layperson musical ear, she sounded both high and low at the same time. This video has a good explanation: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-RCp-GBdjQuo.html
The thing that is so great about Elina Garanca's Carmen was that she knew how to bring the seductive energy to the character with her voice and acting to the point where it feels real. Carmen is a character who's not only seductive, but she's her own boss and Elina nailed it! This is Tony-winning acting!
I know, right! Like she just exudes this kind of confidence in her sexuality. This is a woman that enters the room and the world stops. All the men want her, and most women too. But she'll only pick the one SHE wants
Exactly what transpired with me. Kept hearing snippets of this all over the place in commercials, movies and TV shows then finally was watching an episode of Archer where "Carmen" was mentioned and I heard the music intro and those dulcet tones of the female voice and I knew I FINALLY found the song. Now to listen to the rest of this opera...
I know exactly where I first heard it. Hey Arnold did a parody episode on this. They went on a field trip to see this opera and suddenly they were all the characters instead.
@@molochsorcery4357 Sometimes commercials, movies and TV shows lead to a good end. Carmen (the opera) is very well constructed, you can enjoy every note of it, not only wait for the significant arias.
She is ruggedly raw, sultry, sensual & provocatively powerful. She emulated Carmen perfectly, I've always been a fan of Dorothy Dandridge's portrayal but this woman embodied her character perfectly.
This is a tragic character. She is just maladapted. Her tragic end is inevitable. Or to put is more directly: it ends very badly if one behaves like this.
Rugged and sensuality not only in her voice but her expression and her way to command her presence. Sensuality and seductiveness at its best. What a woman, what a voice.
It's an opera, operatic plots aren't exactly realistic, not to mention that the stage director moved the action from the original setting in 19th century Spain to the Spain during the Civil War. (edited to add) If you want to have a laugh about some operatic plots, you can watch Bugs Bunny parody on opera "That's opera doc".
I often come back to this video,it's one of my favourite interpretations of this opera ever, voice and acting are both on point.Elina Garanca perfectly embodies Carmen's free, rebellious and sultry spirit:Carmen is shamelessly herself leaving nothing to subtlety.
Aller, personne parle Français ici, alors je le dis pour tout le monde, Elina Garanca est incroyablement magnifique et je viens de tomber amoureux d'elle
This is what opera singers do.. oh, and she sings without microphone too, and this theater has 4000 seats. She can dance too btw, here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Q5h_7ywjPPQ.html
Am I the only one who loves the fact that she actually knows how to squeeze a piece of clothing and she does it so naturally? I know it doesn't seems to be important, but do you remember that scene from Goodwill Hunting when Matt Damon is mopping the floor and You can see that the actor doesn't really know how to mop the floor? 😆
I never saw Matt Damon mopping the floor, but I understand your point. She probably never squezes her clothes at home but she knows. Men never pay attention to washing or mopping except when they are janitors. The production of the film should have had Matt mopping the floor until he learned to do it properly.
You know how hard is to sing in the shower while putting shampoo , this lady is doing laundry eating flirting picking up fight while sings one of the toughest operas.. plus she’s beautiful and hot
I think the role of Carmen has to bring a sense of Alure and Seduction, a hint of mischief and danger, with the exception of grace. Those traits make up the role of Carmen, and it is a bit difficult for I guess some opera singers to bring. But this performance is very sexy and I think that's what make this performance sexy.
@@eroupopper Theatrically, she is excellent. I don't know about the singing part - maybe good, but not great. So, still an enjoyable performance, provided that you are looking, not just hearing. If you want to enjoy Elina at her superlative best, please listen to her singing musica sacra. Hint: search for her magnificent rendition of Césa Frank's "Panis Angelicus"
@@the_Tigro Thanks for stating the obvious. There's a lot more to that though, from her technique to her lung capacity. It's not as simple as the way you say it is.
Good support and breath technique is the answer. You only need to stand and plant yourself if you're a beginner. Lots of singers with good support and breath techniques can sing laying down, it happens a lot in rock singing especially. An example would be Maynard James Keenan from Tool and his weird posture in Sober live, and when he once sang a song while wrestling a drunk audience member who invaded the stage.
I've watched this so many times, and the only thing I can think of is, she looks like a woman that could eat you whole. Truly incredible performance, every move and look so perfectly calculated!
This is not solely about singing - this is also a great theatrical performance (in case you forgot for a moment that Opera is "sung theatre"). Everything here is in the right measure - pleasure included
Like Shakespeare, it's not enough to just say the words, you have to properly PERFORM it. The Queen of the Night aria from Mozart's the Magic flute is a magnificent feat of vocal gymnastics when merely sung, but PERFORMED, this is a mother making a demand of her daughter with the musical equivalent of "I brought you into this world, and I CAN TAKE YOU OUT OF IT". [For prime example look for the RU-vid video of it performed by Diana Damrau, The Royal Opera] Carmen is an utterly amoral temptress, wanton and seductive, and she needs to be performed that way. Elina Garanca NAILED IT.
I read the book a few years ago. Carmen is the quintessential femme fatale. The original heartbreaker. The woman is just gorgeous and plays with the main guy like a toy.
Excuse my ignorance, i just discovered i happen to really enjoy opera and i would like to know what is the name of the book to follow this play please 🙏🏻
@@carl_anderson9315 i read thousands of books, know all operas, never Heard about IT. Really? Sorry from Germany, my Phone interactet with right writing
I've never seen a singer perform Carmen this way. She wears her sex appeal so casually and with such ingrained confidence that it actually makes her seem almost inappropriate while not at all being so outwardly. Masterful hand.
Dear Taka Ono Very interesting your comments. So I translated it to Portuguese (Brasil): Nunca vi uma cantora executar Carmen desta forma. Ela usa seu sex-appeal espontaneamente e com inteira confiança que na verdade a faz parecer leviana e como se nada mais existisse externamente. Mão de Mestre J.Xavier.
Binu George what does "the characters are a lot more animated than this" even mean? You get more points in opera for moving about? Absolute nonsense, most people go to opera for the quality of the singing!
Smoothmicra absolutely false. Opera is just as much about acting as it is about singing. If you watch opera just for the singing you might as well just go to a concert.
Which would be a fair point if he said the acting was much better in the earlier performance, but he didn't, he said it was "more dynamic", whatever that means. Opera is, of course, a balance of acting and singing, wouldn't disagree. To counter your point though, you can listen to an opera on the radio and enjoy it immensely, however you wouldn't get the same pleasure from watching it without sound, regardless of how good the acting is! :)
Jasmine Agree 100%. Her performance is out standing and I swear her singing improves dramatically. I keep waiting for the men around her to burst into flame. She projects so much sexual energy she must raise the temperature at the Met by 10 or 20 degrees.
I'm all for free content.. But if this is the teaser.. On RU-vid.. And it teases you, like elina does.. For free, you should reward her.. By buying the DVD, like Ken mentioned.. Or at least visit her, and all 1000s people involved making this happen, in the operette..(ken, thanks.. Just ordered..)
Cannot help wondering what reaction may have been at premiere performance. CARMEN, so common, so unafraid of expressing her desires. How incredible to have a heroine this honest who is able to appreciate her sexual attraction. Forget Salome, CARMEN loves her power and proclaims it without shame. WHAT AN Elucidate Top Notch production!!
They thought it was inappropriate and raunchy. Carmen as an opera has aged much better than expected. I do like that more modern takes does not make Carmen out as much as a villain and make her intentions much more ambiguous.
Is nobody talking about how she just casually peeled an orange with her teeth? Orange peels taste SO bad. Edit: a lot of people have replied saying that orange peels taste fine, so I did a little research and I think its the pith that's bitter. People have also mentioned that it's definitely not an orange and probably a clementine, which is a lot less pithy so that makes sense! Sorry for any confusion, I'm not an orange expert 😅
And what a singer! This opera is really difficult to sing, and she performs it so effortlessly, even while sitting down. Have really big respect for her.
This is truly a Carmen you can believe in. When she tells you, "If I love you.... watch out!" you better. believe her. No phony coquettish gypsy crap here. Wonderful.
Someone uploaded the whole opera. This is act 1. Act 2 is on the same channel. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-s8PxCwN1DUU.htmlsi=oLcj0Y__ppP7jS9c
CptSeagullEight - a lighter voice will not be able to get through the card scene in this opera. Think Julia Migenes-Johnson. She was a fantastic Carmen in the 1980s movie, but she herself said that she couldn't sing this role on stage. (edited to add) Besides - Carmen isn't an ingenue or young lady. She is a vulgar gypsy who works in a cigar or cigarette factory and occasionally helps smugglers by seducing body guards. Lighter voices are better suited for ingenues like Zerlina.
CptSeagull Eight Antonacci has an interesting voice. She actually started as a mezzo soprano and then switched to soprano roles apparently, so she clearly has strong low notes, IMHO. Now, Sarah Brightman would be a joke, she'd not even be heard in soubrette roles which is why I named Migenes-Johnson who has a light soprano voice and mostly performed in musicals, but who nevertheless was able to sing Lulu at the Met to much acclaim. Migenes-Johnson was a nice Carmen in the movie, not sure if you've seen it.
CptSeagull Eight - I was curious about Antonacci, so I read about her. I am not a singer even though I had voice lessons for personal enjoyment when I was already out of college and working. I had a light soprano, but it is way too light for opera. At any rate, I could never sing in public, totally losing it in front of people, maybe only in front of friends in my living room. I don't know much about metal though. Brightman voice is very small, nice timbre but so thin, and yes, she cannot do lower notes.

I can't emphasize enough the effect her performance is having on me as I watch this. Her voice is the most incredible voice I have ever heard. So clear, deep, rich, like thick bolts of red silk pouring out, folding over itself...
The moment with the flower on the soldier's belly is wonderful and extremely provocative! I didn't expect that, the director has shown some nerve there. And what about the actress... The perfect Carmen, an extraordinary performance!
I've seen Carmen live a couple of times, and also watched more renditions than I can remember. However, Elina's portrayal of the lead better captures the sultry, mischievous and positively devilish flirting character of Carmen better than any soprano I have seen. It's all in those eyes which are simply mesmerising.
I agree 100. She is the total package, how many times, you saw not mezzo to jump in... she is the real one and great neutral package, not too extreme such as old portray as a horny, or dominated...leave it to our own imagination...
I agree with you. Seing her out of the scene would make one think she would play Juliet or Marguerite, but here she is showing that she can be "devilish flirting" too.
my first time to listen to opera and not gonna be my last for sure there is something mesmerizing that I don't understand a word but the feeling, the passion, her voice and ofcourse her eyes did make all the translation I needed
It's incredible that she managed to eat an orange during singing this. Oranges make you drool like crazy, I opened one during the break of our opera choir and got yelled at and the windows had to all be open because of the citrus scent.
I am not really sure if she actually ate it or it was already pre-cut and she pretended to eat it. Or even if it is a real orange. We see it from the back.
If you love this you've got to check out the whole opera. Somebody uploaded it here. This is act 1 act 2 is on the same channel. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-s8PxCwN1DUU.htmlsi=oLcj0Y__ppP7jS9c
She is a dynamic, forceful talent of very high intelligence and naughty humor. A tremendous musician too. Very different from the very great Cecilia Bartoli in tone and style but are we not fortunate to walk this scorched earth with two such enormously gifted, hard-working musical singers/actors as these two ladies....keeping in mind how very easy it is to criticize and find fault even with the Angels.
Think about this. All those people milling around the stage are amazing singers. Massively more talented that any pop singer that has ever lived. Each and every one of them.
Joe Smith, i wonder if they always play/sing their parts in background pieces. I mean,a whole career mainly as a background performer with no first role acts at all.
@@tinaasjatinaasja7448 i do not tknow how it is in other cities, but in Zurich they are volunteers that are singing in backgrounds, students of music, or just people with some time (retiree etc). They will not be paid, but they are a part of the opera.
@@Anna-dp8lf seems they just enjoy the process, and at the same time,it's a good chance to take some part with big stars of opera. So,can i also participate in such events, as a random tourist in Zurich?
Damn you Elina… I don’t know anything about opra at all. Came across this video and must have watched it 50 times now. Your eyes!! Oh those eyes…! The sultry look, the confidence, a bit sassiness, mysterious bliss. Elina, you have casted a charm spell on me I cannot seem to break. My music choice is metal, black metal. I now have you on iTunes and I listened to all of your fantastic music. I cannot get enough. You are a shear talent of utter brilliance. Lol because of you, a tannor, opera fan now. I am privileged to see this and listen to your music ❤❤
This is by far the best staged version I've seen so far. Super sexy and authentic. Authentic be the word for it. Simple, honest, well done. Elina is a great actress! The vocal interpretation is not my favourite, but I like it anyway. It is supposed to be sexy. And guess what: IT WAS so who cares.
Simply the best piece of music I have ever heard. I just discovered this whole opera thing this year and I feel like the world has opened up and shown me its pearl. Take my money!! Take it!! Just give me more.
I am Indian and there is slim to none chance that I will ever get to see any opera live but damn me, if it stops me being Utterly fascinated on this side of screen❤️. Much love and appreciation for the art✨🔥😍❤️
She's great, and everybody knows she's great. But what really adds to this performance is all the background folks are really on point too. They're all responding and reacting, even when they're not the focus. It's great stuff.
