In this video Kirby Allison sits down and goes over the importance of having a good year welted shoe. When it comes to good year welting, Carmina Shoemaker is at the top of their game. With both their men's & women's shoes being good year welted, Carmina offers an incredible value for the quality.
Based on the Spanish island of Majorca, Carmina is best-known for their cult-like following amongst dress shoe aficionados, for their ability to combine extraordinary softness and comfort with sturdy Goodyear welting and elegant last design. Carmina offers an excellent value with most of their calfskin models beginning at just $450.00 with free shipping to the United States.

Nice video as always Kirby. I have two pairs of Carmina shoes and can't say enough about them, they're well worth the cost. My oldest pair of Goodyear welted shoes are Fabi, I've resoled them twice and have worn them a lot for 22 years and they're still going strong. Wooden shoes trees are essential!

Wish I could meet with you at the JJ Fox in London for a cigar or two - my treat. You taught me not just wear out the sole and throw the beautiful £300-500 shoe away, but that you can resole them etc. sounds simple and maybe obvious enough for some, but it was quite a finding for myself. Now every weekend I'm polishing my collection using saphir products, enough said... Stay classy @KirbyAllison 🎩

Thank thank you Kirby, I’ll definitely let you know that I did truly truly enjoy your video, as I’ve enjoyed all your videos since last year. I can definitely appreciate how you explored and explained the in depth process of welting in various ways. Honestly, myself to preserve even an inexpensive leather sole I’ve had in the past with my Ferragamos I purchased when I was in my 20’s I have a tactic which is immediately having my local cobbler put Vibram or Magna Rubber Sole Savers so the nice leather never gets touched and ruined, plus you get an outstanding grip and the durability is two to three times as long. Now, a lot of high-end manufacturers like Carmina like you were referring to use Dainite, which comes standard. Although, even AE puts them on which I do hope to enjoy on my new ones which just arrived👌🏼 Look forward to your next livestream and video🤝👨🏻‍💼

Kirby, you continue to amaze as you lead the way in teaching the world about quality. I thought your Quarantine Series is your best work, but salting your vids with explanations of the basics while highlighting an “aficionado shoemaker” such as Carmina supports Carmina while introducing America to the qualities of a great product. You are improving the world one video at a time and making us all more style- and quality-conscious. Bravo to you and your team!

I think Blake-stitched is good for starting a collection if you're on a budget. The one thing I never get is why young folks do not use Shoe Trees or rotate them. I mean, if you pay several hundred for shoes, just spend $20 more on a tree

Thank you Kirby for your vivid explanations of the goodyear welting process. Two things are missing imo when you mention the superior quality of the goodyear welt compared to a blake stitch: 1 A blake stitch shoe is less water resistant due to the small stitching holes that run all through the soles. 2 When a blake stitched outsole is scuffed to a certain extend (it does not even have to be completely worn down) the thread is easily tattered or ripped and at that point the shoe is only held together (or not) by glue.

I have a pair of alden shell tassel loafers that were probably resoled five or six times over the last 35 years. Most recently when I took them in my cobbler advised me that they would need to be rewelted.... So he installed new welts and they are back in front line service!

@@yacovlk7924 It really depends if the shoe has a rubber cap on top of the leather sole
@thechemtrailkid
@thechemtrailkid 4 года назад
@@yacovlk7924 absolutely. I would go as far to say that a properly done Blake Stitch is superior to a properly done Goodyear welted shoe since a Blake stitch actually sews the outsole to the insole while a Goodyear welted shoe relies on glue to hold the welt to the insole via the gemming.

you're looking great in that pin stripe suit, kirby. to answer your question: i haven't yet had the actual soles on any of my shoes resoled as of yet, except for the heels of some of my cheaper blake stitch shoes. for my more expensive good year welted shoes, i like to have a sole protector put on top of the leather outsole as i it helps to preserve the outsode much longer.
@kirbyallison
@kirbyallison 4 года назад
Thank you very much. I'm really enjoying wearing it! It's great when you have high quality pairs of goodyear welted shoes, as like yours, they end up lasting a long time before needing to be resoled anyway.

@@kirbyallison Cheers for the reply. I think that suit looks especially good on you because we're used to seeing you in more conservative attire. Regarding the outsoles, is JR Rindenbach that long lasting that you songbook need a sole protector? I think i'd have one put on regardless just to make sure the sole stays in top condition

Would appreciate your thoughts on the following, Kirby. I've got a few shoes with rubber topy soles. The rubber lasts for at least 1-2 years of regular wear (pretty similar to naked leather soles, correct?) and they can be replaced for less than half the price of a full resole; here in Australia I can get a cobbler to replace the toplifts and put on topy soles for $60, as opposed to at least $140 for a full resole. Given this what benefits are there to full sole replacement, other than the aesthetic difference?

If Allen Edmonds made a shoe for $550 with all these specific details, I would buy it at full price. I'd even want them to refuse to put it on sale, just to ensure that the quality control is higher than it has been recently. I don't want an okay $250 shoe. I want a high value, American made shoe that competes with all the other countries shoe makers!

I have never understood why a shoe with a glued on sole cannot be resoled. Everyone says that, but no one has ever explained clear enough at least for me to understand why it is so. Shouldn't it be the easiest shoe to resole, as you do not have to go through the complex processes involved in good year welts or blake or the like.

360 degrees Goodyear welt is used by Allen Edmonds and some of Alden Shoes are much stronger than the 270 degrees that is used Carmina especially in Shell Cordovan!!! I will take the vintage shell cordovan shoes made in the late 1950’s & early1960’s by Allen Edmonds, Alden & Florsheim Shoes over any other shoes made by the British, Spaniard or Italian. I have been wearing the shell cordovan shoes made by the above shoe manufacturers since 1958. I am now 83 years old and have always used shell cordovans!
