"Carnival of Souls" is a 1962 independent horror film starring Candace Hilligoss. Produced and directed by Herk Harvey for an estimated $33,000, the film did not gain widespread attention when originally released, as a B film; today, however, it is a cult classic. Set to an organ score by Gene Moore, Carnival of Souls relies more on atmosphere than on special effects to create a mood of unease and foreboding. The film has a large cult following and is occasionally screened at film and Halloween festivals. It has been cited as an important influence on the films of both David Lynch and George A. Romero.
Harvey was a director and producer of industrial and educational films based in Lawrence, Kansas, where he worked for the Centron Corporation. While vacationing in Salt Lake City, he developed the idea for the film after driving past the abandoned Saltair Pavilion. Hiring an unknown actress, Lee Strasberg-trained Candace Hilligoss, and otherwise employing mostly local talent, he shot Carnival of Souls in three weeks on location in Lawrence and Salt Lake City.
Mary Henry (Candace Hilligoss) is riding in a car with two other young women when some men challenge them to a drag race. As they speed across a bridge, the women's car plunges over the side into the river. The police spend three hours dragging the murky, fast-running water without success. Then Mary miraculously surfaces. She cannot remember how she survived. Mary then drives to Utah, where she has been hired as a church organist. Odd things happen along the way. At one point, she can get nothing on her car radio but strange organ music. She passes a large, abandoned pavilion sitting all by itself on the shores of the Great Salt Lake. It seems to beckon to her in the twilight. Shortly thereafter, while speeding along a deserted stretch of road, a ghoulish, pasty-faced figure (The Man, played by director Herk Harvey) replaces her reflection in the passenger window and stares at her. When The Man suddenly appears in front of her, she swerves off the road. She manages to get back on the road. At a gas station, the attendant tells her the pavilion was first a bathhouse, then a dance hall, and finally a carnival before shutting down.
In town, Mary rents a room from Mrs. Thomas; John Linden, the only other lodger, wants to become better acquainted with the blonde newcomer, but she is not interested. That night, she becomes upset when she sees The Man downstairs in the large house and retreats to her room. Mrs. Thomas, who kindly brings her some food, says she did not pass anyone. Soon, Mary begins experiencing terrifying interludes when she becomes invisible and inaudible to the rest of the world, as if she simply is not there. When The Man appears briefly in front of her in a park, she flees, right into the arms of Dr. Samuels. Samuels, though he acknowledges he is not a psychiatrist, tries to help her. Her new employer, the minister (Art Ellison), is a bit put off when she declines his suggestion of a reception to meet the congregation. When she practices for the first time, she finds herself shifting from a hymn to eerie music. In a trance, she sees The Man and others of his ilk dancing. The minister, hearing the strange music, denounces it as "profane" and insists upon her resignation.
Terrified of being alone, Mary agrees to go out on a date with Linden. When they return home, he talks his way into her room, but when she sees The Man in the mirror, she becomes upset and tries to tell him what has been happening to her. He leaves, believing she is losing her mind. After talking with Samuels again, Mary believes she has to go to the pavilion. There, however, she finds no answers. Other ghouls join The Man. Mary tries frantically to escape, at one point boarding a bus to leave town, only to find that all the passengers are ghouls. Then she wakes up, showing that she dreamed this sequence at least. In the end, she is drawn back to the pavilion, where she finds her tormenters dancing. A pale version of herself is paired with The Man. When she runs away, they chase her out onto the beach. She collapses, and they close in. The minister, the doctor, and the police investigate afterward, but are baffled. Her bare footprints in the sand (the only ones) end abruptly, but there is no trace of her. In the final scene, the car is finally located and pulled from the river. Mary's body is in the front seat.

Directed and produced by Herk Harvey, written by Herk Harvey and John Clifford, starring Candace Hilligoss, Frances Feist, Sidney Berger and Art Ellison.

The definition of atmospheric horror. Fun fact: George Romero actually sites this as being the inspiration for his vision of zombies in Night of the Living Dead, which became the model for our contemporary zombie movies/games. That whole zombie epidemic idea wasn't a thing until then.

Yeah so no, I’ve never seen any source for David Lynch or George Romero. You’re referencing someone who said he found superficial similar themes in one scene, but I’d love to see an actual source on any actual influence this had on them.

The effect which this film has had on me for fifty-two years is considerable especially as a touchstone. I like to re-watch Carnival of Souls throughout the year but especially in the weeks leading up to Halloween. Every time I watch this film I go right back to the Saturday night in '65 when Carnival of Souls was the first half of the regular 'fright fest' on the area's leading VHF channel. I would also acknowledge my mother's diligence for finding this in the listings and encouraging me and my younger brother to watch together. No surprise that my mother did incorporate the makeup effects into some Halloween costumes going forward through at least the late-'60s which is about the time I stopped trick-or-treating and just went along with my youngest brothers as they went about their fun. Good times.

What a beautifully done horror film dealing with a classic paranormal and religious theme -- the idea that Mary is lost in a dream world or purgatory or in-between as she hasn't yet realized or accepted what happened to her. It seems to me that this film was a major influence on David Lynch's Mulholland Drive -- a lot of similar moments and symbolism and the nightmarish dream state.

aleister crowley adored watching Mulholland Drive. Watched it over and over again. Never realizing what you just said. Thanks for the insight. What does it really mean to be undead? Poor thing. How to understand what a favor driving the stake thru the heart really symbolizes - possibly an act of compassion. Horrifying.

@Lyn Good comment. I thought this movie's many great artistic merits have been overlooked by film critics over the years. In terms of plot, setting, acting, background music, dialog, conclusion ~ all give this gem much merit. Small wonder why it had such a great influence over other film makers, notably George Romero. While this was a low budget movie done on a dime as compared with other Hollywood creations, this cannot honestly be called a Grade B monster flic. It is just too good, and too aesthetically meritorious to be branded that way.

From what I understand, both Jacob's Ladder (the 1990 psychological thriller) and the Silent Hill game franchise (a series about a cursed town which draws in and torments troubled individuals by exploiting their fears) both drew inspiration from Carnival of Souls. It's very interesting and cool to know about those modern works and then watch this because you can definitely see where they drew some ideas from. And, it's just a good film.

This is a great, atmospheric little film. It had an extremely limited drive-in run in the early sixties, and then the print got pulled, I believe because of a contract dispute between the producers and the distributor. The print got lost in the legal wrangle and stayed out of circulation for years, giving the film a reputation as a 'lost' classic. It wasn't unearthed and put out on video until the early 90s.

I got to see this movie at a (now closed) local art theater and was expecting just some goofy horror flick but was surprised how genuinely creepy it was. I loved the organ music which gave the movie an overworldly quality to it. Yes, the acting and dialogue are laughably bad at times but it seemed to all fit together to form this very strange dream world. The ending where Mary is being chased hrough that amazing abandoned amusement park is quite eerie. A small gem of a horror movie.

Also ein Schlüsselmoment... Tja, was soll -- mir das sagen?

Fun little movie. Her car appears to be a 1960 Chevy Bel Air. In the last scene, the center dead woman's left eyelid flickers in an obvious goof.

One of two movies I have recently seen that were actually way better and creepier than expected. The other being 'White Zombie' with Bela Lugosi.

I'm from Lawrence KS where a lot of this film. My wife and I were married in that church, Trinity Episcopal, in 1969. Yes, that organ was played. And when my wife was in junior choir.

I’ve discovered this gem only within the last year and have probably watched it a half dozen times now. It’s just my style; subtle, B&W, but still creepy. I’ve read that it’s a source of inspiration for one of my other favorites Night of The Living Dead which is easy to see why.

Yes, they finally located the car and she is in it and always was. She died, but somehow got trapped in between the physical world and the afterlife. There is a Twighlight Zone episode that aired in 1960 that is very similar where a young woman sees a hitchiker on the road. It also includes a suitor of sorts, in that case a sailor.

Yeah. I saw the Twilight Zone episode first and have to admit, I liked it better. Found it more creepy and scary. This one had me kind of bored and tedious.

I think it’s about not wanting to part of the world but not wanting to leave. She didn’t want to follow the standards of living. Play music this way, act like a woman, don’t say crazy things , don’t trespass. It was an overall undertone , do what your told and shut up. However that kind of living made her unhappy. She died and I think the movie was her last attempt at imagination before the darkness of death caught up with her. The girl was never happy with society (aka life) and the movie was like a lesson to herself , maybe she should have been nicer other than cold. The movie definitely is about the horribleness of dying

As someone who lives in Salt Lake and have seen my fair share of concerts at the Saltair I was very happy to learn a horror movie was made there, especially after the second time it was burnt down and all derelict and creepy

Intro'd to this film via a Friend...a maven of Films, & Loved it from the start. As a paranormal fan from Boyhood..( had 3 great Aunts, who were Spiritualist...'think of the kind one sees in 'horror' films of the 30's and 40's, and with their seances' and readings...they could give you the willies)...was often told, that for most, this is what lies in the Beyond. Until you accept your Death...think of this film when I watch," Ghost Adventures."

Yes the minute I seen this kid with his hair all slicked back in a T-shirt and jeans I automatically thought of Lenny and Squiggy from Laverne & Shirley. I can almost guarantee you that's where they got the character from. (( But besides -- Squiggy -- )) I [ - LOVE - ALL - THE - VINTAGE - HORROR - MOVIES ] thanks for putting them up !!!!
