"The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari" (German: "Das Cabinet des Dr. Caligari) is a 1920 silent horror film directed by Robert Wiene from a screenplay by Hans Janowitz and Carl Mayer. It is one of the most influential of German Expressionist films and is often considered one of the greatest horror movies of the silent era.The film used stylized sets, with abstract, jagged buildings painted on canvas backdrops and flats. These unique sets gave off somewhat of a theatrical sense. To add to this strange style, the actors used an unrealistic technique that exhibited jerky and dancelike movements. This movie is cited as having introduced the twist ending in cinema.
---
Directed by Robert Wiene, produced by Rudolf Meinert and Erich Pommer, written by Hans Janowitz and Carl Mayer, starring Werner Krauss, Conrad Veidt, Friedrich Fehér, Lil Dagover and Hans Twardowski.

I have watched this film in one of my college courses and I am a big fan of Cinema. One of the first things that I did notice was the drawings of the scenery with its geometrical shapes and sharp edges. This reminds me so much of the art designs of Tim Burton and I believe that this film offered some influences.

Of course. Also, The Penguin's appearance in Batman's Return was inspired by Caligari, while Johnny Depp had Cesare in mind when he played Edward Scissorhands.

The set designs are the most extraordinary i've ever seen in their abstractness and the film, itself, is incredible. This isn't a very clear print and it's been restored but with different music and intertitles which, I feel, quite alters the flavour of the original.

The behind-the-scenes story of that twist is really messy and complex. I learned a lot about the history of this film in a college course I took; maybe some might find it interesting. Though I still really love the film, what I learned changed the way I view it. Apologies for the length of this comment. The screenwriters, Carl Mayer and Hans Janowitz, absolutely hated the twist ending because they felt it cut the legs out from under the political and social messages, primarily the critique of oppressive authority, that they were trying to convey in the film. Both men were staunch pacifists. Janowitz had served as an officer in WWI, and his wartime experiences embittered him with the military. Mayer avoided military service in WWI by feigning insanity, which led him to be intensely examined by a military psychiatrist (the inspiration for the Caligari character); he developed a strong distrust of authority because of this. The original screenplay did have a frame story, but it just introduced the main plot and didn't subvert it like the final cut does. Janowitz claimed that he and Mayer were excluded from discussions about the change; they sought legal action to try to stop the alteration of their screenplay, but this proved unsuccessful. They were even going to publicly protest the film but were ultimately persuaded not to do so. The director, Robert Wiene, supported the alteration of the original frame story to the big twist we see here. Fritz Lang, who was the original choice to direct this film (he had to back out to direct another project and was replaced by Wiene) claimed to be the original source of the frame story idea, but it's unclear whether he actually was the idea's originator or just contributed to structuring an existing concept.

You really have to pay attention to these kinds of films in order to appreciate them on any level. This one has re-kindled my interest in silent films in general.. alongside radio plays, such as Sherlock Holmes etc.. Radio plays may require use of the imagination, but , unlike these, are still somewhat passive involvement. Thx!

if it doesn't make this more terrifying, the guy who plays Caligari became a hardcore Nazi (even had one of the main roles in Jud Süß) , meanwhile the actors for Francis and Alan were Jewish and gay respectively and had to leave Germany. As did Wiene along with writers and producers a couple of who were also Jewish. Talk about stabbing your colleagues in the back.
@ataxidermiedhuman
@ataxidermiedhuman 2 года назад
Conrad Veidt wasn’t Jewish, but he was an ally. I think he even filled out a consensus saying he was Jewish in support of Ilona Prager, since he was her husband at the time. The man was also bisexual I believe. What makes this whole thing interesting is what the actors themselves were like.

I love this score. It's the original I think. I have this on an old VHS. Who ever posted this THANK YOU!!, and how can I get the ones with the original scores that I have on VHS. on to d.v.d.? Respond so I can research. Video stores can't seen to get the original themes. I'm only collecting a few of these rare, timeless and some of our first motion pictures.

There is no such thing as an original score for a silent movie. Background music was always provided live by a pianist or a pit orchestra at the theater. Modern releases, such as this one, add a musical sound track to produce the same general effect.

I think people should be allowed to not like things. There are classics I acknowledge how revolutionary they were for the time but feel have aged poorly and find boring watching now for the first time. Not saying that this is an example, but anything could be. Haven't made up my mind how I feel about this one yet, I think I like it?

1920's horror was more atmospheric and eerie than the following decades. I wonder what happened?!! Horror seemed to be at a peak of awesomeness before before the 1950's. Then it was terrible. And didn't get better until the late 60's in my opinion.....
