Carnival Vista Cruise Ship flexing in rough seas 12-31-16 

as scary as this looks, this flexing is what makes this ship so durable-to spread these stresses throughout the ship so it does not snap and break in two.as Aimee Ward says" they built it right".

If the ship was not flexing then I would get scared. Awesome design and engineering at its best!!

I know it's supposed to do that, being an engineer I even understand the math behind the physics, but actually seeing it can be creepy.

its a cool thing to see. if ships were rigid they would crack. they are built this way on purpose, just like a sky scraper flexes in the wind.

That is real creepy. I was on the Vista in March on deck 8 but we didn't have seas like you were having. I see what you are seeing and hearing. I like how you scrambled to get up when the guy walks into the hall!

If you look at the ceiling around 1:14 you can clearly see it. Pretty cool. Guess it's kind of like tall buildings and wind haha

A ship is good at flexing. It's design includes expansion joints. Not too far removed from a human double joint bone. Not to say a ship can't sink. But. Many ships have survived due to the inclusion of expansion joints.

Airplane wings, bridges, skyscrapers and more all bend like this to distribute loads. If they couldn't bend, stresses would be concentrated in certain areas leading to materials fatigue. Finally a microscopic crack would begin to grow, and from there it is only a matter of time before the failure.

Is very creepy but all large ships needs to do that, that flexing properties dissipate the enormous and variable forces of sea waves along the ship that can create a lot of stress on the metal. Is the same thing for very long or tall buildings, they need to have expansion joints. I'm an architect, it is pretty normal, but as you see, very creepy too. Nice vid.

Yea..ships flex and bend...its what keeps them from sinking 99 % of the time.

All big ship are designed to flex or all the walls and floors would crack with the pressure of the seas

It's called hogging and sagging, quite normal.

I was in carnival Vista and it has good and bad service but I enjoyed it the dorms are kinda small and big the beds are amazing and the food is perfection😋

That’s a cruise ship in the rough seas they aren’t built for that ocean liners like Queen Mary 2 can be in rough seas not cruise ships and cruise ships can not flex that much they aren’t built for bad weather or high seas
