When I first listened to this, I really got the vibe that it had to be a commentary about *someone* in particular, and I wanted so badly to know who it was; the characterization of this whiny, pessimistic, yet oddly sympathetic recluse was too heavy for it not to be written with a specific person in mind. Just a couple weeks ago I watched a documentary on Gabrielle "Coco" Chanel, her abysmal childhood and unhealthy methods of self-preservation, zillions of superficial affairs with married socialites, leading up to her little-known affiliation with the Nazi party (yep you read that right), and now I think I finally know. Listening to this with her story in mind gives it such a new energy, and answers all the questions I had about the song's meaning; and the narrator's intent. Caro's delivery of the lyrics, nearly spitting them with malice, bitterness that masks her character's vulnerability, it's so parallel to Coco. She even looks remarkably similar to her. Masterfully done, I love this song even more now.
This is simply a song about anyone who could relate to it. We are all on a stage. We all stand alone at times, most times Especially if we do not follow.
Is this song about remaining an "independent artist" (as in, not signing on with one of the big labels?) If so, I appluad you! And I love your work!! ❤ Mainstream musicians have sold their souls, and it seems the majority of them end up unhappy and/or dead young, or spend their lives trying to get out of rigged contracts. (Those big labels end up with the wealth...it's in most contracts.)
I have one question I ask you where and how can I buy your album? You were probably the most beautiful woman I’ve ever laid my eyes on as a gay man you were just you or you’re you are amazing.
