I should probably just keep to myself on this, but for what it's worth to understand this charity organization better, I will keep it short and too the point. Meals on Wheels is a beautiful charity organization that has grown over the years and helped countless people in each state they operate in to receive nutritional food. From children to the elderly to the disabled, God Bless them and the volunteers who help make it all happen. There is a lot that goes on to pull it off, from the acquisition of the raw food, to the processing, packaging, and delivery. There is management, directors, fundraising, and so on. And of course it takes money and not all full time folks in the organization can be volunteers. That is a revolving door of constant recruitment for the positions required and that can be performed by volunteers. So there are, and have to be, paid individuals. This is not a government program. Never was. A vast majority of the required funding is from private donations. Only about 3-5% of their funding comes from the federal government, and it is not direct. That small amount is chosen by each state that receives Federal block Grant money. Should the Federal level have to make cuts to state block grants, it is up to each state to decide what they may then need to cut. We are not talking about eliminating the grant money altogether, but cuts in spending have to happen from time to time. So each state then has to decide where the remaining grant funds go. For Meals on Wheels to survive as an independent charity, they have to raise money constantly. A 3-5% loss of funding, would require the state decide that since they received 10% less grant money, they are going to eliminate any and all funding to Meals on Wheel programs. That isn't likely to happen. It's much more likely that the 3-5% funding will also be cut by 10% of that small amount. But the fund raising department of this organazation may have to work harder to make up for the loss. The picture here cannot be politicized, but it will be and I urge everyone who cares about this organization to avoid being caught up in the lies and to instead spend their time helping a private charity organization to survive the way it has for decades. BY donating to it, and by volunteering when you can, and SHOWING you truly care about it beyond armchair outrage over reasonable things like budget cuts that have to happen. That's what I and my kids and my mother in law do, and my own mother and other disabled friends we have, have become grateful, but not entirely dependent, on this wonderful program. A program that began being run by the people and for the people in their communities. Turn this over to the Federal government, and it will become a bloated political pawn with every thief getting their hands in the till while the people who need that food will get less and less. Please do not bite on this bait as it will certainly ruin the program and THEN when cuts are required at the Federal level...it WILL directly result in people being cut from this program.
