I did this while anxiously awaiting the results of tonight's Atlanta Regional as well as waiting for footage of Carolina Crown's new ending, which I've heard is "shockingly brilliant" after its premiere appearance at last night's Tournament Of Champions event.

This is the finest 33 seconds of brass playing I have ever heard with 80 players. This is even more impressive seeing how tough this lays in the fingering. The real key to pulling this off was the placement of the players on the field. Putting the trumpets in back in the drill drove the low brass in the front which have a slower response with these type of lines. Truely ingenious! Normally you see low brass in the back. In Canton the other night I spoke with their brass caption head and he thought I was correct in my assessment. I made a special trip to Canton and got a front seat left of the 50 just to hear this segment played live. I have listened to the recording I made hundreds of times. I was driven to tears by this. I'm not sure why I can't tag you, Casey Stuart, but isn't that crazy?? I did this transcription out of impatient anticipation for the scores, pulling for a competitive surge for Crown, so it was an incredible sight to witness it actually take place in Atlanta!

How long does it take you to do these transcriptions? You must learn a lot in the process about arranging. I am very impressed! Good work.

David Rogers Absolutely - learning about arranging for drum corps is one of the main reasons I do these transcriptions. It's one thing to ask for the score and study it, but if you can pick out each part by ear, you become savvy to the process of creating the exact sound you want when you commence arranging of your own. This by-ear process - among other resources (Marching Roundtable podcasts, DCI interviews, watching live rehearsals, etc.) bring about some delightfully revealing truths about why certain drum corps sound the way they do, and it's quite simply one of the most fascinating things I involve myself with from day to day! It depends on what I'm transcribing and how much of it I'm transcribing, but this one took about an hour and a half. I appreciate your kind words and compliments - thanks for watching!

How do you do it though? I've heard that some people use a keyboard to hear the pitches or something like that.
