Caroline Myss - The Saboteur (The Power of Archetypes) 

I’m a potpourri of archetypal messes

My therapist is helping me with this whole self-esteem thing, and she told me that we want to defend the parts of us that we do not want to lose, we don't want to lose power, we don't want to lose the last parts of our self-esteem then we use 3 methods of defending that. 1. Is by attacking, for instance, if my bf tells me the kitchen is a mess I get upset and lash out at him saying, I do so much in the house and blah blah blah. Not even listening to his words of just pointing out something we have to sort out. I immediately take it as an attack on me. 2. Isolation. I would rather be alone than doing something wrong, being bad, or any way my self-esteem can be threatened. And doing so cutting yourself off from any support system or being a support for others. 3. Perfectionism. If everything is perfect and I'm acting perfect, being ''perfect'', everything being just so then there won't be anything wrong with me, or any fault in how I'm doing anything etc etc. The other way perfectionism appears is, I'd rather not finish anything, because I am to afraid it won't be perfect. By doing that you are also not learning how to im[rpve anyways, so it's also a sabotage. Any of these ways are doing the opposite of building self-esteem. At night before going to sleep it's better to think, how did I build up or support someone else and myself and how did I break down someone else or myself. By just starting by noticing these things later or when you act in a certain way, already changes you and your life. It's better to be like water, not forcing anything or anyone, be soft and open-hearted rather than hard and cold towards life, others and yourself. Be kind and understanding.

I love your book "Sacred Contracts" and use it regularly as a resource. I'm a psychologist and work a lot with the archetypes with my clients. How delighted I was to discover that you're starting this condensed series on archetypal energy, and I would encourage everyone to read the book, as well.

It seems to me that perfectionism and fear of failure empowers the saboteur. I read feminist psychotherapists from Wellesley Univ. who stated that women use power to empower others but rarely use it to empower themselves. Thanks Caroline for all these wonderful presentations of different archetypes that live within us.

My goodness as a trauma survivor I have a sabotage archetype. My disconnection from the self has been my life battle. I have broken people with my shadow and been of service with my light. My ego has many programs in survival but I wish to rise above. Not lose power but unite.

I allowed a false internal message that wasn't even true to sabotage me. In some ways it was Grace that protected me for years from false paths. I think using salf-sabotage has been a pattern to protect myself. I'd like to grow to the point where I can just be congruent and allow intuition to guide me alright without having to use salf-sabotage to escape a situation that felt horribly intrusive and more threatening than supportive

You just helped to refuse a job that I was again going to sabotage myself. No more! Thank you!

This is very helpful. "A little bit of truth goes a long way.' Yes, you have given me some truth to reflect upon.

Some people, a lot of people, sabotage themselves by taking on too much responsibility and too much blame. They hold themselves to impossible standards and their perfectionism gets in the way of their achievement. This is the opposite of what Carolyn describes in this video. It's not rooted in excuse making or an unwillingness to work hard. But it is rooted in false beliefs, often (usually) connected to childhood mistreatment. Such people stop sabotaging themselves when their beliefs change.

This turned out to be a splendid serendipity, or maybe more of a miracle. Just what I so deeply needed when I most needed it. I reclaim my power.

Just found you!, Yes, this was me believing in everyone!! Heyoka, I did the work over the last several years! Just got my power back over the Devil himself. Victory over a Covert narcissist!!! Guided by my Spiritual faith!!!! Praise God! Healing now and getting my light back!!!

The Saboteur in me has been coming to my awareness over the last couple of months. Now I really see it. I see now my resistance to doing anything administrative has held me back again and again. I don’t take/ haven’t taken opportunities if it requires me to step up and take responsibility for that part of my life e.g going freelance when I was dreadfully unhappy in a job. Last week, considering not pursuing my masters when I heard it required collection of data from primary research… This was when the penny dropped, my vague doubts about the masters actually revealed the saboteur I’m ready to take it on

When I saw the topic, the first thing that popped into my head was the old Mad magazine cartoon, Spy vs. Spy. I think this is a lasting Archetype for me!

I love this refletcion so much, We are absolutely incredible in holding the saboateur energy to prevent stepping more fully into the truth, and ourselves, naked, vulnerable, brave and Powerful- leading from the heart. To choose Grace when the saboteur shows up, that to me, is a daily spiritual gym face-off. I love how you speak of standing up to this archetype. To embody the one who chooses another way. And we can stand up to the saboteur still with compassion, and with humility, knowing she lives in the collective and will be back when you get too complacent or arrogant, or weak, or succumb to doubt and darkness. I love Caroline and her work, but I respectfully will say that when you stop eating meat your intuition DOES become even more heightened. The Yoga practice explains this process of transformation in detail as the unfolding of the Siddhis. Just give it a go and change your diet because a lot of people are led to a plant-based diet because their intuition is screaming at them to change for their health, but as Caroline states, the conscious mind doesn't want to change. So spot on to my situation. I have been aware of the imposteur inside me but it such a struggle. It has become stronger since my mother's death 2 years ago. Today I feel overwhelmed.

O.....M......G!!!! This explains why, when I tell friends how eliminating inflammatory foods completely cured my "arthritis" they respond in the same way...(i.e. "I have to do WHAT?...I can't live without my sugar!...etc) I could never understand it. I felt I was sharing with them potentially life-saving information that their doctor won't tell them (and I was!) and when I have gotten such responses, I was thinking quietly to myself "You don't WANT to feel better! You must be getting something huge out of being in pain!) So, soooooo frustrating...but I have learned I can't save people from themselves...and I don't even try anymore.

I absolutely love and respect Caroline so much! Everything she does is brilliant! This is an observation I’ve made about this topic in my family, and I wonder if anyone knows if there’s an expert who can shed light on what has developed in my family of 3 sisters after our mother passed 17 years ago. (I’m the oldest who took care of them for years while our mother worked.) A totally different archetypal structure began after her passing among my two sisters and I and our families. So, when I hear this fascinating information, even though I realize I’ve become the scapegoat among narcissists (one with a multimillionaire husband, and the other who grovels to be her best friend.), I find it interesting that they still try to disempower me every time I see them, and I’m 68 and they are in their 60’s… much too old to be petty and judgmental without knowing the story behind the appearances. It reminds me of Cinderella and her stepsisters (but I’m not sure of the accuracy of the comparison!) who began swooping in to my mother’s house and grabbed everything of value our mother had, before I even got there, along with things that I was supposed to inherit as the oldest daughter. Then, began the barbs, the insults, the ridiculous and untrue accusations, and my being a victim trying to get them to forgive anything I had done that I didn’t know I did. It got worse and they developed a narcissist family cult that excluded me. I’ve become the scapegoat and I have no idea why, and neither does my daughter, whom they call about family functions. not me. I have asked them, with no response, and it used to eat at me to death until I heard Caroline say “Stop asking why.” It hit me like a ton of bricks, so that I prayed, became as full of integrity and kindness as I could. By then, I had developed a serious illness from environmental toxins which forced me to retire from my teaching career, collect disability, move from the toxins all by myself, being single, and very tiny, carry on without anyone to talk to, any support, nor help the tight-knit family that we used to have (excluding our alcoholic father). with no one to talk to. I had 4 operations within 10 months that I had to beg for rides to. I have a great deal to be thankful for, especially a 7 year-old granddaughter who adores me, so I’m not dependent on them, but the recent insults from the youngest sister proved to me that she has had NO idea what has been going on in my life, my disabled son’s, and my ex-husband’s, whom I’ve been letting live in my house for the past 2 1/2 years. They still try to disempower me with their judgmental insults and untrue stories they’ve told themselves. Obviously, there’s more to this, but this is it in a nutshell. It’s not my imagination. Everyone sees it. I feel bad, but I’ve decided they are not going to make me feel mad about myself anymore. I intend to become so bright as a light-filled being, that their darkness won’t disempower me. If anyone knows of a good therapist who deals with this, I’d appreciate a referral. I live in Michigan, but telehealth is always open! Thanks for reading my story.

I thoroughly enjoy truly love being able to tell people "..more power to ya ❣️" I figure it doesn't cost me anything and they don't have anything to lose and if it encourages them makes it a little bit easier for them or what ever only something to gain and nothing to lose.

I ask the universe for grace in a very heavy moment not even considering it would come from within me. I started to play self pity affirmations and the saboteur had no choice to leave me. I empowerd myself to make a decision. The steal will turn to gold. I feel like I've passed a 4 hour test. exhausted.
