"Caroline, Or Change" is a Tony Award-winning Broadway musical with book and lyrics by Tony Kushner and score by Jeanine Tesori that combines negro spirituals, blues, Motown and classical music with Jewish Klezmer and folk music.
After a successful run Off-Broadway, it transferred to the Eugene ONeill Theatre, starring Tonya Pinkins in the title role and directed by George Wolfe. It was critically acclaimed and nominated for six Tony Awards in 2004, including Best Musical.
This video illustrates some of the steps in taking a concept to Broadway - from the perspective of the music. Note: we have moved the "Composition" section (which logically should go first) to the end of the video so that we get to the singing earlier. This is particularly helpful for repeat viewing of the video - but listen to it in any order you prefer.

Someone should bring this back to broadway. I honestly think that this musical was way ahead of its time and would be more appreciatted by audiences now after the success of sung through, deeper and more thematically complex musicals like Next to Normal

For decade now I have been magically transported by the moment at 7:54-8:01, and about whether that is anything more than just one note in that final "flat..." Cause the way Pinkins sings through the vowel sounds like she's bending the note like a guitar or string instrument does - I know intellectually its about semitones and playing with microtonality....but emotionally, I'm just feeling her wring her soul through a phrase and out the other side. It's such a masterpiece of music theory matching the moment because a supreme musician/performer makes it feel genuine.

So underrated and snubbed. They need to do a revival or live broadcast with Jenifer Lewis.

Jeanine Tesori and Tony Kushner are really two of the most creative minds in their respective fields

@MikeyXKun The first thing they sing is the Moon Trio, later Tonya sings Noah Go To Sleep. If you're talking about the opening night performance, Tonya is singing Lot's Wife there.

Jeanine Tesori is the biggest badass.

That's awesome! Well I mean, if she's your stepmom, I can see how you might not think that's cool. But still. She seems like an incredibly sweet and intelligent woman.

Yeah, finally figured it out. It really isn't as exciting on the cast recording as it is sung here.

I love Tonya! And it's spelt Pinkins, not Perkins : ]

Does anyone happen to know the title of the song starting at 8:35?

I think it sounds like an early version of "The Radio" section of the Opening number. Listening to the lyrics, you can hear the "melt the hairspray" line that Ramona Keller sings and the "turn on despair" part that leads into the Dryer, at the end. I've actually read this comment for years and have just now thought of a suitable answer.

The lead is an amazing actress but her voice cracks on every performance I’ve seen her do

I think that happens for a couple of reasons: the score, at times, is a bit out of Tonya's range and she's chainsmoking REAL cigarettes eight shows-a-week.

I don’t believe Kushner, Tesori or Wolfe would hire someone they didn’t believe could wholeheartedly embody the role, which Ms. Pinkins does.
