I remember seeing this at 11, and I still remember it as the best Broadway musical I’ve ever seen in my life! I don’t think any cast can begin to match this one!

After one of the performances on Broadway, my mother got to meet Mr Hines outside of the theater. My mother told Mr Hines that the day of the performance was also her birthday. He got the cast to sing Happy Birthday to her outside of the theater . Mom walked in the door late that night, and she was jumping up and down

I have been looking this for years! I "taped" the last half of it on VHS when I was a teenager and would watch what I had of it over, and over again. One of my favorite musicals.

The greatest show business mystery to me.....how was Hines not a top recording artist? He was INCREDIBLE in this role...but it was his singing was just WOW!

...just saw it last week 4 times at the NY City Center (Feb/Mar 2024) and thoroughly enjoyed it (especially since my loved one was in the ensemble!; she wore the original dress worn by Tonya Pinkins as Anita!...also, the original cast came to a show one night!!)...wish I'd seen it with Gregory and Savion just to see the phenomenal tap, but this version made the point nonetheless!!...each of the 4 audiences were engaged and really got into the signing, dancing, the story, etc....during the show, all I cared about about was being entertained but I do really appreciate running up on this for the history and mindset background....George and Susan along with the original asst' orchestrator and the current director, did an after the show talk and paid homage to Luther Henderson, as well as gave some more backstage info about what they were thinking when they wrote their respective parts...as for Jelly, yes, he had some serious issues with accepting himself for who and what he was and sadly, there are way too many folks out there today who have the same misguided pride and lies....perhaps they will come to THE truth before the night they die and leave this earth forever....
