Sad Mary had to give up her baby. Astonishing the upperclass father was willing to not only acknowledge the child as his, but also was willing to keep her as a legitimate child.

My family has just begun to do our DNA on both ancestry and 23 and me. Ancestry is a much better tool. I found my family has spread from Ireland to Scotland, Wales, England, Italy, Australia, Canada, and USA. I found second cousins living in the same city as me now which is quite impressive because I am an immigrant to this country. I found my grandmother gave birth to a child while living in the Poor House, I found a bigamist, and one particular man seems to be quite a philanderer. I’ve connected with my second cousins in various countries and we are now friends on Facebook. This is so much fun!

That is so amazing. My mom has an ancestry account and I have been on there researching my father's side. However, when I checked her side of the family. She had traced her paternal side of the family back to the 1000's. Also, in Ireland, Scotland, England and Wales. I am pretty sure there were others listed. However, i am not having any luck on my father's side of the family.

This video shows how it's worthwhile to look at the census and see who lived next to your ancestors. In one branch of my family, every father and son in the neighbourhood is listed as a fisherman. So you learn more about your ancestor's community.

My ancestors' neighbors always had much more interesting occupations than mine. Lol. 95% of mine were farmers in NC. Although, my current research target family, one son-in-law was a JP... but you'd never know that from the Census. Have to dig around and find more information than just Censuses to get a full picture of your family!

Well, I must say that the young man in this story was much more responsible than the one who begat a child to a servant girl in a family I was reseaching. In this instance a girl from a family of farm-labourers in a village in Surrey went to London and became servant to a wealthy family. When she became pregnant to the son of the family, they then sent her back to Surrey, and sent him to New York where he married an heiress. But on the Baptismal register in a little church in Surrey, the Vicar recorded in black and white that the baby he Christened was "the base born son" of that not-quite-so Honourable gentleman.

Well as far as I'm concerned they were instrumental in making me who I am. They were brash, courageous, fierce, intelligent, loyal, and most of all everything they did was for family and for country. I am the descendant of Saxon kings, Tudor queens, Catholic saints who died for their beliefs, protestant preachers who baptized David Crockett, American heroes who fought to protect the lives of their family, French pioneers, Viking raiders, and Irish rebels. There is nothing you could say that would ever make me ashamed of where and who I came from.

@H.E no it's because history is written by the winners, and losers like yourself whine like children. My ancestor wrote history, redrew maps of the world, explored the unknown, and yes fought the battles that needed fighting. Elizabeth kept the shores of England free from the tyranny of the Spanish Inquisition, Edward united the country and gave his life as the last warrior king of England. Lord Thomas Howard gave his life for the Catholic faith rather than submit to what he considered a false faith, his father gave the colleges of England the greatest gift of art, and philosophy. His grandfather created the gift of iambic pentameter and modern prose before Shakespeare was a glint in his father's eye. My family gave the world art, science, faith, loyalty, and freedom. Apparently the only thing yours gave you was the gift of pissing and whining about how the winners ..well won.

More people take the test every week. It was a huge gift item for Christmas 2018. I took the test 6 years ago from AncestryDNA no one I knew, a couple of 3rd and lots of 4th cousins. Now there are several second cousins, many 3rd and thousands of 4th cousins and new features added. One called ThruLines is linking a few unknowns and revealing the lineage of how we are connected. Relatives on page one in 2013 are now on page 22. My mothers death was the end result from a disease (mom didn't die of it, she was Terry Siboed) 3 years ago. Yesterday, someone called to let me know a former coworker had died. As the conversation went on they asked me to explain the disease my mom had and I said well scientists say only in the Pacific Islands does it appear to be possibly hereditary, elsewhere it is thought to be expose to some environmental toxin. I later took a nap and woke up and cried out oh mom what rotten luck. They had updated the ethnicity results with the latest information since they millions more database samples and notified me I had 1% Philippine, my mom would be 2-3% Philippine as I had my dad tested and know it is not coming from him and appears only in older relatives from one of my moms family line and quite possibly from that 2-3% Philippine (Pacific Isles) my mom inherited that god awful disease.

Looking at the illegitimate daughter as an older child with her father and step-mother is quite surprising. A 'reputable' family would often have nothing to do with the child and the woman would be held to blame, and if no family of her own (who also might refuse to take her in - poverty or 'shame') maybe ending in the Poorhouse. The taint of illegitimacy would affect marriage prospects etc so however Caroline came to be living with her father it is no wonder the mother's name was never mentioned. Wilkie Collins wrote a novel about two adult sisters whose parents died on their way back home and apparently the parents had just got married. The sisters were born illegitimate and the girls lost their fortunes as a result. Different times

I had something different from that happen in my family. My great-great grandmother died soon after giving birth to my great grandfather's younger brother in March 1893. Which means my great grandfather lost his mother just 4 days before his second birthday. My great-great grandmother died on March 30, 1893 and my great grandfather was born April 3, 1891 so he didn't get a lot of time to get to know his mother either. This man was my paternal grandfather's father. My paternal grandfather was the youngest child of 8 children to his mother and father so his parents were well into their 40s when my paternal grandfather was born in 1938. His father was 47 years old at the time of my paternal grandfather's birth. So my paternal grandfather had 7 older siblings and today he's the last surviving child still living today since his last surviving sibling his sister died in 2016 at the age of 86 years old. My paternal grandfather himself will be 81 years old on June 9th of this year of 2019 and he is still together with my grandmother whose also still living at almost 81 years old herself in a marriage that has now lasted 61 years of marriage today which will be 62 years of marriage on November 30, 2019 since my grandparents were married on November 30, 1957. Then two years after their wedding they had just given birth to their second child on November 19, 1959 and that child was their only born son who actually is my father.

@Ellie If you choose to submit a DNA test with one of the large international companies: your DNA profile is held on their computer files. If you select "Open": that means anyone in the world that you (and your mother) are related to can contact you. Initially people sometimes find only distant blood relatives when they first receive their DNA results. As years go by, and more people submit tests, there can be a family breakthrough. You can find an Aunt, Uncle, first or second cousin, niece or nephew etc. And through those relatives, you can sometimes unravel the story of your mother's parents and their families. Sometimes the extended family know about an adoption, and may have some records and photos. Sometimes they know zero ! Everybody in these forums always recommends to go into a genealogy search with a completely open mind. My mother is also adopted. Her DNA test in 2021 only provided quite distant biological relatives.

In those days, in England, fathers had all the rights over their children. Mary didn't "have to" relinquish her daughter; most likely the child was taken away from her by the father and his family. If a woman was in an abusive relationship and wanted a divorce, it took an act of Parliament to get it, and a poor girl would have had no chance of that. If that same abused wife left her husband, she also left her children. Off the top of my head, I can't remember when a law was passed to change that, and I'm not sure that my hunch on how things went is entirely correct, but there's a good chance that the mother still had no rights at the time this occurred.

I remenber the murder well because I was the same age of the victim and it was the biggest news here for a year. I thought this case would never ger solved and I could never forget the name and pix of the little girl. I had a good long cry when I saw the news that day.

What an absolutely bizarre reaction from both women to this pretty awful information... laughing? Jesus, I mean I guess it's their kind of cultural experience, but it seems genuinely tragic, not funny.
@valross4886
@valross4886 5 лет назад
TRAGIC? Howso? The child was raised in a privileged household, with the father taking responsibility for her. The child's mother might have kept her until she was an older child, and might have been happy to relinquish her to her father for more opportunities in life. TRAGEDY would have been a childbed death, or starvation, or horrific abuse. Births like this happened all the time, continue to happen, and must be dealt with in some way to best benefit the child. This seems an ideal outcome.
@urikasmith3414
@urikasmith3414 5 лет назад
Absolutely,@@valross4886. I didn't comment on the circumstances, I was talking about the reaction. I wonder if they'd had time to process what it actually meant when they heard it, instead it did seem like they wanted to make light of the 'great fun with the servant next door'. Again, perhaps it's a cultural difference, but I found their reaction (not the actual circumstances) rather shocking.
@Britgirl58
@Britgirl58 5 лет назад
I think that their reaction is ok as the event took place long ago, but to think the poor servant girl had to give up her daughter is tragic. The daughter was obviously better off, but we don't know how the stepmother treated her, nor, I suppose will we ever. Of course, there are lots of questions about the servant girl - was she able to keep her job, was she monetarily compensated, did she go on to have a legitimate family?
