Re-upped & tweaked, remastered from the Japanese Quad CD-4 vinyl LP of "The Singles 1969-73", this includes the one-minute "Close To You" intro and is set to a clip from the 1971 Grammy Awards. I hope you enjoy It!
As a guy who was born in the 2000's, KC for me is the greatest female vocalist of all time, for me she's the epitome and standards of what i call PITCH PERFECT, GOLDEN CRYSTAL voice. and that's a fact and final... ❤❤❤
the musical interlude intro from the 1st line of close to you to the beginning of we've only just begun, always makes me cry.. so so beautiful and yet so so sad and melancholy....
the opening from the opening lines to close to you to the orchestration of "superstar" always gets me every time... so beautiful and melancholy.. tears me up every time...
mbblover, this song, like many of the Carpenters' songs, has a mystical way of taking me back to my childhood. This song, especially, stirs up a mixture of memories and feelings that always gets tears out of me. Great song, great sound, and great video.
There are interviews with Paul Williams taking about writing this song for a Crocker Bank commercial and not thinking too much about it. "And then an Angel sang it."
When I first heard this "Quad Mix," I was surprised, and more emotionally impacted than I would've imagined. The one minute "Close To You" intro, with additional orchestration of "Superstar," felt like a wonderfully sentimental snapshot of the best of their music career. The end of the intro (note) is held, and the piano for "We've Only Just Begun," blends in, bringing me to tears, for a number of reasons, not the least of which was Karen's tragic, early, demise. It's also heartwarming to know that "WOJB" has saved many lives, as reported by Richard Carpenter. The present pleasures and joys of the simple things of life, with the hopeful anticipations and expectations spoken of in this song, has saved many souls from committing suicide. Paul Williams wrote a great (ad) song, but Richard took it to a much higher level.
i know exactly exactly how you feel that beautiful acapella like opening of close to you followed by the beautiful but so sad melancholy bit of "superstar" gets me EVERY TIME BAWLING!
Can you believe this classic 70’s ballad was originally written for a TV commercial? For a BANK, no less? And that Richard Carpenter discovered the TV ad watching the late late show one night? And that soon after he told Herb Alpert of A&M Records that he and his sister Karen oughta record it? It all proves that EVERYTHING happens for a reason-and that Richard Carpenter had an ear for great music-OVERNIGHT!In the wee small hours!👌
Karen is the best. Her voice never faultered. Even in her last year, she sang with heart to our hearts. I always imagined what she would be like today. I remember seeing a Bob Hope special, he said “the fame hasn’t changed the Carpenters”. I believe she would still be a lovely lady with lots of love. She probably would have done well as a solo while still being Carpenters. Definitely still be on tv, seems that was always a natural and the tv loved her. She accomplished so much in her short life. I know she would have done so much more!! Karen is missed and loved!! 💜
I love everything about this video, with the great mix and sound quality. Another thing I love about it is that they use huge props looking like musical instruments. Karen looks exactly like an angel on top of the clouds, with unreal-looking objects behind her.
This was played at our wedding almost 47 years ago and my daughter found this out and for our 45th Anniversary she went to a recording studio and put it on a CD for us and surprised us with her song. She sung it Beautifully.❤
1974 #1 ALBUM: The Carpenters - The Singles 1969-1973 This album was at the No.1 spot as I turned 2. I do have a bit of a soft spot for the Carpenters. Yes they were a bit cheesy and at this point in my young life I hadn’t even noticed them yet. That would come a short while later. I think my Aunt had this album on cassette but I never listened to it until I picked up my own copy many years later on vinyl. What I like about them is that they took a look of care to produce their work. It wasn’t just a case of slapping down a few tracks and sending it out into the world. I think that was down to Richard Carpenter. This album also isn’t just some greatest hit collection muddled together by the record company either, this was made with care for their listeners and crafted into a presentation as the first track shows. For example, the first track ‘We’ve Only Just Begun’ doesn’t go straight into the song. In fact on first play, I thought they’d messed up the sequencing as it begins with the opening to a completely different song of theirs. It just doesn’t tell you that on the album. It starts the album with a small medley of their past singles already released, and which appear later on the album. A nice surprise as your not expecting it, and so a gift for their fans. A very polished work. And of course such a beautiful voice from Karen Carpenter #mymusicalroadto50
Can’t believe it took me this long to find this video. It is spectacular. It’s so much more impactful than anything I’ve seen in a while. The music is one thing but this type of video certainly blows the envelope to bits. Absolutely the best!
Richard has remixed and played around so much with their original mixes, I'd forgotten how they originally sounded. When the drums first come in here, there are all sorts of things going on that are now hidden in the remixes. True fans of their music know what I'm talking about. Thanks for posting!
+fool4singing There's a light bass pedal happening at the very beginning of the song at 0:02 . So the 'drums' begin at that time. Can I ask when you think the 'drums first come in here' happens?
This will be played at my Wedding on the 27th of September.....Thank you for posting, but Thank you Karen & Richard for the music. I miss our friendship Karen - I know you will be there in spirit.
This is the best video I have seen anywhere of this magnificent song by my favorite 70's group. Karen had my teenage heart doing cartwheels back in the day (I was 13 when the Carpenters hit the top of the charts in 1970; she had won me over already with "Close To You"). Richard's arrangements and her voice were just a match made in heaven. Thank you for doing such an amazing job on this video!
So tell me, what goes through your mind when you complete a re engineered version of a beautiful classic such as this, I can't describe how it affects me as you have done a sensational job, well done !!
Another excellent job, themotownboy1! You have to be a "professional" in the video editing industry. I surely do miss Karen, and I wish her life had been happier.
Года 2 тому назад ,я в первые услышала этот дуэт и пришла в полный восторг . Голос ,редкой красоты и композиции их .Как жаль ,что так скоропостижно и без временно вы ушли от нас ..
Astounding and beautiful job... The mix was incredible and your editing and graphic work impeccable... I rarely if ever comment, but this investment of your talent, time, energy and dedication made me take notice... And of course, this is truly an example of real music... and flawless musicality...
@@nonsuch in what alternate universe? Please, listen to the whole song. Plenty of percussion here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-UcyKLhvLaeg.html and in the previous chorus.
@@nonsuch , first apologies... I shouldn't have come down on you. My comment was a misinterpretation of what you were saying. Now, I know you're critiquing the mix, not the group... I'm sorry. People like us who love and appreciate REAL music, especially from that era, should be aligned. When I'm at the gym and I hear the droning cacophony of today's releases, all sequenced digital instrumentation, 100% auto tune, lyrics from a sewer, and a melody with no more than three notes (if there is a melody), all created on a laptop with ProTools, and no studio, I stand in awe of musicians like The Carpenters et al, and the artistry of the mixers and producers from that era. We've lost that art form.
I thank you so much for your work. It's said it's impossible to improve on perfection, because Karen was perfection personified. You do much to honor this beautiful young angel, who is still very much missed by so many of us today. May her heavenly voice continue to warm the hearts of others, and stir the memories of generations to come
There's a certain sparkle in Karen's eyes here which I haven't seen in any of her clips before. She must have felt joy whilst doing this, bless her soul.
One of their richest songs, courtesy of Paul Williams, made all the more poignant by the first minute mix, the attendant photos, and Karen's much-too-early demise.
Youth and beauty, innocence, carefree ,all-day music. Then tragedy in war, politics and an angel flying to close to the ground. What might have been for America.
as for seveties rock overall, i dot get carried away with stuff, the music wwould exist with its ow fas, ad i ot proe to takig situatio i regards to rock critics, as if i iherertly kow stuff, ad i dot mistake luck for skill ,
