Re-upped & tweaked, remastered from CD-4 quad vinyl. My most favorite Carpenters song... Incredible arrangement, orchestration, a fuzz guitar solo, and Karen & Richard's voices overdubbed into a multi voice chorale... I hope you enjoy this rare version!

When did Tony pass away, as a guitarist myself his goodbye to love guitar solo influenced and inspired many of my own guitar solos, as melodic as hell and cool tone, and clever riffs so I’m sorry about your friend Tony. R.I.P. Tony But so you know he lives on in many of those you’ve never known. The great thing about recorded works, you never know how you inspire or influence others..,

I’ve been playing guitar for years and have many favorite songs. But this is my favorite guitar solo of all time. It’s just perfect. Very powerful yet gentle as well. I’m envious that he was a personal friend of yours! I’m just thankful I got to hear him play. I know your comment was made 3 years ago but I just wanted to respond. Hope you don’t t mind. Thanks.

He passed on June 5th 2010 of heart disease, he was only 60. This was one of my favorites too, love that fuzz guitar sound. Although he worked with an array of artists as well as did some producing. Was thinking about him since yesterday was the 10 year anniversary of his death.

The best upload of this on RU-vid. Contains great live footage of Karen, the band and of Tony Peluso's ground breaking fuzz electric guitar solo - infact two of them (1.28 and 2.52) - including the extended fade out at the end. The stills you chose are great too and complementary unlike some on RU-vid, designed to overemphasise her eating diosorder and obsess about it. This by contrast is tasteful, respectful and a great tribute to her and to this phenomenal song. THAAANKS!

I remember when I saw VH-1’s “Behind The Music”-The Carpenters special in the late 90’s Tony Peluso mentioned that Richard Carpenter wanted a scorching guitar 🎸 solo for this track-Peluso thought”You’re crazy!”. Well if I remember right Peluso said he credited Richard Carpenter with inventing the power ballad with this record! I think that shows Richard Carpenter was a genius! What a departure for their sound I thought when I first heard it!!!

For me, this song means 2 things beyond it's overall beauty. 1) Karen is singing exactly what her future will be, and that makes me so sad. 2) Tony Peluso shredding that guitar....I can listen to that over and over, louder than my ears should take but God how I love it. I can't help but be so angry at her family for not seeing her sickness, but I understand. I've hid depression from my family and friends for decades. It's amazing what you can hide when you keep a smile on your face, and it's obvious that Karen learned that as well. I was 23 the day she died. I couldn't believe it. Tony is gone also. I bet he's making some great music where he's at now, and so is Karen.

It's so strange. Back then there was genuine talent with people who were REAL artists. They became famous strictly because of their talent. Nowadays, there aren't any talented singers, songwriters or artists. I really think that the golden age of rock artists is long gone. My one wish is that the artists today were more focused on ART and not on money & fame.

Noted as the first hard rock ballad. After the first few takes, the late Tony Peluso's ending guitar coda was too "soft" for Richard, so he told him to "let 'er rip" and the rest is history. An epic performance!

Thanks for the u/l. I lost my mother pretty young in life, and I will always be comforted by Karen's voice; she was my ma's favorite; she spoke in a similar rich contralto. And so Karen shall remain incomparable. This was their defining tune, at least to this humble songwriter. 'Sugary Pop' or not, it takes real guts to go outside the comfort-zone lyrically and arrangement-wise...and what a verse+chorus combo, eh? :-)

This was the first rock power ballad. While the Carpenters were working on the song, Carpenter decided that a fuzz guitar solo should be included. Karen Carpenter called renowned electric guitarist Tony Peluso and asked him to play on the record. Tony remembers: "At first I didn't believe that it was actually Karen Carpenter on the phone but she repeated her name again. ... It was at this point that I realized it was really her and that I was speaking to one of my idols." She told him that she and Richard were working on a song called "Goodbye to Love", that they were familiar with Tony's work with a band called Instant Joy, and that he would be perfect for the sound they were looking for. Peluso first played something soft and sweet, but then Richard Carpenter said: "No, no, no! Play the melody for five bars and then burn it up! Soar off into the stratosphere! Go ahead! It'll be great!". So he did and she did and they did, and the rest was music history.

Wow what a great original from The Carpenters. I find this song really to be my ultimate favorite of theirs, and I love many more of them but this was my era of radio, and I began playing guitar in 70s so just added to my favorite list. Great guitar work too. I love the lyrics and the chord progression is so perfect !!! When those harmonies come in after the last “I’ll say goodbye to Love” then the drum fill, the Great Wall of perfect harmony singing ahhh’s along with that irresistible chord progression, then to top it all off w the burning 70s guitar solo Made this song my total favorite songs of theirs!!’ If you read this Richard, thank you all much for all the years and lifetime of music to listen to and relive that magic time and time again!!! One more thing...This is the Quad mix? I have quad tapes and systems so I know what quad is, but how do you make a Quad mix when it’s in stereo? But I have to admit there’s something really warm and solid about this mix as I listen in Stereo. Every track recorded seems to sound fuller w more punch and bottom end then typical stereo track. This Quad Mix ROCKS! I should get my quad set up going again and listen to my Carpenters Quad records which I think most of the Carpenters catalog was released in Quadraphonic!!
