The Ed Sullivan Show was a television variety program that aired on CBS from 1948-1971. For 23 years it aired every Sunday night and played host to the world's greatest talents. The Ed Sullivan Show is well known for bringing rock n' roll music to the forefront of American culture through acts like Elvis Presley, The Beatles, and The Rolling Stones. The entertainers each week ranged from comedians like Joan Rivers and Rodney Dangerfield, to Broadway stars Julie Andrews and Richard Burton, to pop singers such as Bobby Darin and Petula Clark. It also frequently featured stars of Motown such as The Supremes, The Temptations, Stevie Wonder and The Jackson 5. The Ed Sullivan Show was one of the only places on American television where such a wide variety of popular culture was showcased and its legacy lives on to this day.

Unlike a lot of singers, she didn't even discover her ability until she was in her mid teens and she started recording professionally under her brother's production not long after. Her voice is literally what I envision an angel sounding like - pure, comforting, calming, loving. RIP, Karen Carpenter. One of the greatest of our time.

I know…oh so sad for Karen. But the memories flood whenever I hear this song. Maybe because I met my future husband in 1971 and we had that song sung at our wedding.

I named my 3rd child after Karen Carpenter. She's one of the greatest lady singers with an angelic voice.

Why is no one making a bio-pic for Karen Carpenter? Y'all are sleeping on her immense talent that has graced our humanity.

A truly tragic figure. Another died way too young artist who struggled with self image. Loved her voice. Always feels bittersweet watching her and listening to her sing now.

The sudden appearance of the coda to "Close To You" at the end of this performance makes sense if you watch the "Close To You" clip (from the same show, 10-18-70) first. That performance fades out just before the coda. They used it as an encore after this number.

Thanks for mentioning that. I was wondering if it was supposed to be like a mini medley or what.

Karen was probably my second celeb crush as a kid right after Peggy Fleming. That voice was angelic.

The voice of an Angel straight from heaven. I am 60 now. Karen is my favorite. Then I found metal in about 1978. The Carpenters are my secret! Shhhhhh. Don’t let my Metal friends know!

When they first came out, I thought the Carpenters were too old-fashioned and unhip. That was the fault of the publicity department; it pushed an image of relentless smiles and squeaky-clean blandness. Now I appreciate their incredible music, Richard's songwriting and arrangements, and Karen's expressive and haunting voice. Luv you Carpenters!
