Many thanks to all the members of the "Hans-Sachs"-Choir and the Philharmonic Orchestra of Nuremberg who took up our idea enthusiastically and performed it so well at the Lorenzkirche in Nuremberg on the 14th of June 2014!" Ode an die Freude or "Ode to Joy" is best known for its use by Ludwig van Beethoven in the final (fourth) movement of his Ninth Symphony, completed in 1824. organized by Evenord-Bank eG-KG

I live in Mississippi,USA. I’m 57yrs old. I first saw this video about six months ago. When I saw it , it made me think that if everyone on earth came together in harmony like this group of very diverse and talented musicians,if for just one day, can you imagine how much of a impact it would have on basically everything.. where I live,at the moment, our lives are fixing to be in a total uproar. We are being flooded with refugees from all over the earth. Also we are poisoned with corrupt politicians, and greedy big businesses ,and our street crimes are fixing to skyrocket. I had to look up this video to have my little fantasy one more time. I read some of the comments and realized it affected lots of people from all around the world, just like it did for me. God bless and keep all of you and your loved ones, now and all the days we have left.

I once heard a little six year girl in kindergarten playing the Ode to Joy melody on a little xylophone, and playing it correctly. I ran around the corner to find out who was playing and nearly cried it was such a beautiful sight. When I walked in on her practicing she was shy and stopped. But the beauty of a child playing Ode to Joy all on their own will always warm my heart.

I have seen this before, but it still brought tears to my eyes, and even though I know that this was not spontaneous, this had to all be staged, by the end I still have tears running down my cheeks. Ludwig van Beethoven would have loved to have known that two centuries later, his music still moves people to tears and inspires millions, filling our hearts with joy. Side note: Beethoven was the first major composer to use the human voice as an instrument within a symphony. Utilizing an orchestra bigger than any other at the time, and with a length of well over an hour, longer than any other symphonic work, Beethoven's 9th Symphony was a major turning point in the history of music. Beethoven inspired composers to begin breaking the "rules of composition", and to begin exploring the use of different instruments, unconventional orchestration, large assemblies, and to incorporate deep, extreme emotion in music that would soar to great heights. Music would never be the same. During World War I, German POWs introduced Beethoven to their Japanese captors, and Japanese orchestras began to perform his works. After World War II, Japanese orchestras began performing Beethoven's 9th symphony, hoping to bring in enough paying audience members to help fund rebuilding and reconstruction of the nation. Since then, it has become a Japanese tradition to perform Beethoven's 9th Symphony at the end of every year. On Christmas Day 1989, conductor Leonard Bernstein conducted a performance to celebrate the fall of the Berlin Wall.

If you look at the history of the world, it is now the least fragmented and detached it has ever been. There has been no other time in the world’s history that the people as a whole are more connected. But with that comes a deluge of information of everything going on in the world both heartfelt and heartbreaking. As humans that are so fragile in our existence, we tend to focus and remember the heart breaking as a form of survival mechanism. So this is really the connectivity paradox. The more you are connected the more you feel disconnected.

Amazing spontanaiety of the people of Nuremberg joining in song to the Ode to Joy, beginning with a plastic flute, followed by the street bass celloist, an orchestra converging together, so beautifully charming, filling our hearts with joy.

I sang in a school choir this excerpt more than 50 years ago. It always thrills me to hear the text by Schiller in Beethoven 9th. The message is so full of hope and joy for all of humanity. We all need this in the present day and time. Great interpretation !

Salieri gets a bad rap as the man supposedly jealous of Mozart, yet in teaching Beethoven he inspired the most incredible music. It was Salieri who taught Beethoven how to weave voice into orchestra. He taught him expressiveness and rhythm. Salieri also taught Schubert and Liszt. The greatness of a teacher lies in the way he encourages talent to soar. In Ode To Joy I hear so much of how successful Salieri was when Beethoven learned to soar. It is music that goes way beyond mere talent into something magical.

Thought it was salieri and Mozart?

@@DanBeech-ht7sw It is true that Mozart can be said to be another of Salieri's pupils, although probably not in any formal sense. Since Salieri commonly wrote operas in multiple languages, it may have been Salieri's inspiration that caused Mozart to want to write opera in German. Salieri was by far the most popular composer of the two during Mozart's lifetime, and it seems they had a great deal of professional respect between them. The depiction in the movie of Salieri as a jealous and resentful man of little talent is pure fiction. The whole story of Salieri poisoning Mozart was malicious gossip and Mozart's death was not consistent with poisoning. He was described as having small bumps on his skin, and he had been weakened by exessive blood-letting the night before he died. His skull, which survives shows signs of fractures from several falls which he had experienced in the previous three years, and it is thought that it is likely that these caused a subdural hematoma. It should also be noted that Mozart had suffered from several serious diseases during his short life, including pneumonia, bronchitis, typhoid fever, rheumatism, and chronic gum disease, the combination of which would have weakened him, and there have been suggestions that rheumatic fever may have also played a role in his death. There could have been multiple factors involved, and the blood letting may have been the straw that broke the camel's back. The scuttlebutt about poisoning Mozart greatly affected Salieri, and he subsequently suffered from depression and multiple nervous breakdowns which would account for the decline in his career at that time. However the conspiracy theories surrounding Mozart's death has meant that the public has connected Salieri and Mozart in a way that is not supported by the facts, and Salieri fails to get his deserved recognition for his positive contributions to the creative output of so many great composers that were to follow.
