Shifting rails are a detachable iron structure that folding buggy tops are attached to and allow these tops to be easily detached from the buggy seats. Building and restoring horse drawn vehicles involves many facets of metal, wood, painting and upholstery disciplines together in one project. This restoration project involves them all. Thanks for following along.

If you were around during the era of the convertible the armature/bars that made its top retractable the buggy hardware/rails seem rather familiar. Indeed the top's pivot points etc when up held the fabric in tension so it would shed water and as it went down accordianed the material back on itself to take up little space as possible. Looking forward to seeing how Dave makes it all work including the covering over the coming months from the era before windshields where to only thing that thru up dust was the hooves/wind the previous generations knew 100+ yrs ago.

A coulee is a square bottom valley that is created by huge iceage floods. If you are interested in finding out more about them check out Nick Zentner's channel. @@Mishn0 Yep. And it's a Montana story too! The Grand Coulee was created when an icedam on the Purcell lobe burst multiple times and flooded E. WA with the water from Glacial Lake Missoula during the last iceage creating the Channeled Scablands. The Missoula Valley was 1000' under water and you can see the old shorelines on Mt. Sentinel and Mt Jumbo overlooking town.

I wonder if the Hexagonal nuts can give some insight as to when the shifting rail was manufactured? Maybe after 1900? Update: I got curious, so I looked it up on Google (Probably should have before I asked) but it seems a guy named James Nesmith created the first hex head bolt in the 1830's. Around 1864 they were written into machining standards in the US.

The term "coulee" took me back to when I grew up in Montana. I just don't hear it used in Minnesota or Arizona. If the fellow was local, you could always check the coulees on the road to the ranch to see if it survived 100 years. I'm thinking: what's a "coolie" and what is a "shifting rail" and an "F 250" what? After a bit of research, I think you mean, Grandad hoiked it into a ditch, it was for the buggy (roof) top and this buggy's style is a bit like a ute, mate. Great show. I'm in. Keep it going.

Well that was a new one on me: I'd never heard of a shifting rail. Of course, I was working more with formal, servant driven vehicles and not so much with buggies. I gather the purpose is to ease shifting the top on and off the buggy? Maybe it makes it so you can move it all in a piece, like moving a camper shell on and off a pickup?

Oh wow as a young man in Colorado 1 of the guys on our crew doing a remodel on a old building found a bunch of irons all together like the first one shown we could not figure out what it was. We also found the irons for what must have been the top, but no fabric on them. Again no idea other then they also had a kind of oval profile to the "rods". Now I can see it and what it was. Sadly some of it went in the dumpster, one of the other carpenters took some of the top rods home and made shelf rails of them for his wife. It came out very nice with a old time flavor to the shelves. Hahaha. So young and so dumb.

Wish there was someone near me that does this stuff that I could learn from. I have rebuilt 2 buckboards in the past just using what was left and replacing what was rotted or broken. I also rebuilt and ice sled used to haul large ice blocks to the ice house. I'm working on a log sled right now and I have a 2 seat buggy that has a set of runners that go where the wheel axles go for use in winter. The wagons and sleds were all owned by my great aunt and were stored under a barn bridge and the wheels were all stored in an old grain room in the barn saving them from the elements

It seems so strange that many decades ago that someone would take something new off a buggy you just bought and throw it away without even keeping the steel portion of it. Perhaps it was not a new buggy and it was a used one and perhaps the parts were not the best but in any event we will never know. I guess littering went back hundreds of years, why wouldn’t it?

Two things, first I wonder if "Doc's" buggy on Gunsmoke was a doctors buggy. Second it's amazing that you could get those nuts off with a little squirt of what appeared to be WD40, I've had modern machinery that only was exposed to the weather a little and the nuts were so rusted we had to heat them with a torch to get them loose. There must have been some difference in the metal then from now. As always an enjoyable history education.
