I think this is one of Oliver's most overlooked performances. He really understands this character, and how his unhappy marriage e could make him be enthralled by someone like Carrie. And he plays this guy with such subtlety and sureness.
Two of the most beautiful people in a movie together! Double delicious treat for us viewers; so sad though, I keep wishing he would have waited for her to return and gone home with her; she loved him!
Janneke Thankyou so much for highlighting what I think is one of Olivier's best pieces of work on film with such a beautiful video I was delighted to find it.
Yes its great as long as you have the grit and heart for naturalist stuff - dreiser v pessimistic. Try an american tragedy too if you like sister carrie. Frank Norris v good too, eg McTeague
Just read the book, so I looked up the movie. A considerable change. Wyler and his friends did some major revision. Not bad, just a whole different work of art.
William Wyler is the same director of Wuthering Heights..1939..of Benur , the Big Country...Roman Holiday.., Carrie " The Prince and the Showgirl....with Laurence Olivier and Marylin Monroe ,,and many others very famous Movies..he was one of the best Director from Hollywood....
We enjoyed the full movie but I had so much hope for this couple. All he had to do was go after her. Or in the end let go of his pride and let her love him and support him. But “No” instead his pride got in the way. He was ashamed of himself. He wanted her to move on without him but they were legally married! She could never remarry in those days, legally without a divorce. All my hopes for the ending fell apart when he left with that .25 cent and walked out never to be seen again! It was a very sad unexpected ending and I felt very depressed. But still this movie was very memorable, well acted, and deserves a good review.
thank you very much it's a gripping story a beautiful person who had everything just not a warm sweet woman who was looking for and who never found poor man
Olivier could not stand Jennifer Jones & Wyler was reluctant to cast Jones, but Jones's husband David O. Selznick pushed hard for her to be given the role. The movie was panned by the critics.
