In anticipation of the 53rd annual CMA Awards, we enlisted the help of co-host Carrie Underwood. We went to Nashville and set up a bunch of hidden cameras in a boot shop. When the customers came in, we had the staff ask a little about them and then Carrie Underwood gave them a surprise serenade in this Nashville edition of #UndercoverSing.

It's not that hard with practice :) "serenade" is a standard theatresports game any improviser is expected to be able to do, host gets 3 pieces of information from the audience & the improvisers have to work it into a song/serenade. The musician is the one that really makes or breaks the performance, they're improvising the music to fit to the singing & the tune & tone they play makes a HUGE difference to how well it works, additionally, if you heard that on the radio out of context, it would sound like crap, but because you, as the audience are invested in the moment & know it's being done on the spot, it sounds much better than it would out of context. Sometimes they do go a bit flat (rarely completely flop) but in this setting, they also have an unknown number of attempts, so they would have just dumped the worst of them & held the best. Rhyming with ostrich would be hell though! The host in a theatresports game of this is being really nasty to the performers if they let that one go through! (which they sometimes do if they know the performers can handle it, makes for an even funnier performance as they expectedly fail)

I met her once, before she won her second Grammy. At the time, I didn't recognize her name or face as she hung out with me for about 25 minutes outside of a Bumbershoot festival in Seattle, when she used my guitar and sang "Next Time He Cheats" for me 2 weeks before it was released. We sang some songs together, and she tipped well before heading off with a guy with phone practically glued to his head. Agent or manager? It was a week later that I saw her on a repeat SNL show as musical guest. Then I recognized her as the woman that had sung with me. I had gone a few years without watching much TV so, at the time, I only knew her as a talented, beautiful, and nice young woman that hung out and sang with me as I was busking that evening in Seattle. It was fun to see this segment of the show.
