Jewel, disguised as a mild mannered businesswoman, drops by a local karaoke bar and performs some of her classic songs to a completely dumbfounded audience. Check out Jewel's new album, Sweet and Wild and her new single "Satisfied".
i remember watching this video when it came out. i loved it then and now almost 12 years later i still love it just as much. jewel is an actual treasure of humanity and i will forever be a fan.
1st time seeing this video, I'm not a huge fan of Jewel but I know of her and a few of her songs and this video was randomly in my YT feed. Glad I watched it because it makes you feel good out of nowhere.
She came from my home town San Diego. Just before she got a record deal she was on a major local radio station to sing and play acoustic guitar live on air. Needless to say she was great and stood out high and above everyone else. And she wasn't even a polished pro yet.
For real. Looks like Jewel could have made it no matter what. Of course she had been singing that song for like 13 years. That is a bit of practice. Also, it was inaccurate of that woman to call her ugly! I also can't help but cry at this video because everything was so much better 11 years ago. Biden is the worst. People who were 10 or 15 at the time of that video are the worst.
she is real because she came back into the place as here self and brought joy and unity to the people. and the peoples reaction is pure and real that is what being a real human is all about.
Yeah as an older white man I was embarrassed by the guy commenting that she was homely first and then sexy after she sang well...neither is anywhere near appropriate for him to say outloud never mind on camera...I imagine he was sufficiently humiliated later though...you'd hope anyway...most guys would be thrilled to be there to witness it and know better than to objectify her like that...on behalf of all men...please accept our sincere apology.
You wanna hear a tune that REALLY projects her emotional tie in to her vocals? Look up “daddy” live from 2020, She really lets it all hang out on that one
Ditto. It's my favorite Funny or Die bit that I've rewatched a dozen or more times over the years and for some reason RU-vid recommended it to me today. ... Of course I had to watch it again ... and get all blurry eyed , again, when Jewel takes the stage as herself and reminisces about her final song.
Jewel was perfect for this gag. She performed in a LOT of coffeehouses before she made it big, so this probably felt just like home to her. And frankly, a lot of other stars probably don't have her chops to do this live thing in a crappy little karaoke bar with bad audio, loud crowd, etc. and still blow folks away. She is the bomb.
I saw Jewel in concert in '99. I was brought to tears, and I didn't even want to go to the concert (my roommate bought an extra ticket). I became a fan when I saw her live that night. She was absolutely the most magnetic entertainer I've seen IRL, and I've seen a good bit!
That's when you know they're the real deal. I had a similar experience in 2014 when I saw Soundgarden at RedRocks. I will never forget how much more amazing Criss Cornell's singing was live. I would go see Jewel in a heartbeat for that reason. And I might have had a little crush on her since I was 11 in 1996. lol
BEST POST of the whole video! brilliant observation and absolutely spot-on accurate! 90% of the "prank videos" on RU-vid seem to be either negative, cruel, making people uncomfortable, or actually borderline harmful -- THIS on the other hand was sweet & endearing! kudos for speakin the truth
Morons like to use the term snowflake as if to say "you're dumb for caring about other people's feelings." It makes it immediately clear that you're dealing with an entitled narcissist that you no longer need to concern yourself with. Thanks fezbot100. Now we know.
....Um, no, idiot. We are watching this video in 2022 because 2022 is one of the infinite number of years that exists after 1997 or whenever Jewel became famous.
TrustNone35 Gas Lamp is San Diego is a nice, safe place to have fun. Unless you're wearing any LA Raiders gear... then you're ass is going into the paddy wagon the moment you sneeze too loud. Yes, the SD police park paddy wagon's downtown.
I worked security at a Karaoke bar in my early 20’s and it’s probably the most fun I ever had in my life. People felt and showed genuine joy and excitement when someone stepped on stage, broke out of their shell and showed their singing chops. Smiles all around.
Music can bring people together and make them truly happy. That old man running off at the end was like a little kid. You could literally hear the camera man smiling as he spoke. Music is awesome like that.
This has to be one of the best surprise gigs of all time. A talent of her level showing up to a Karaoke Bar to play a prank on the locals speaks volumes of her character.
I saw this for the first time in 2010 too. I've never been a Jewel fan. But listening to those two songs she sang made the hair on the back of my neck stand up. It still happens today 9 years later.
I'm revisiting this - it makes me cry and laugh at the same time - I LOVED Jewel since her first record - so funny those who didn't put 2 & 2 together and realize Karen was Jewel .....
@@balhaB108S Only the ones based on others: "Uncle Drew," for example. As far as I know, this was the first--the foundation of the idea (not of the prank, but of the prank in makeup and prosthetics).
@Q Anon because she's in prosthetics in a dive karaoke bar and her name is Karen? Your analogy is just out there. But w/ a name of Q Anon, I shouldn't really expect much. Good luck with all that.
I actually disagree. I think it's the opposite. You know it's not star power, but actual talent when you can go in as a homely unknown and still rock the bar.
Agree! Ive been on the hunt on youtube for similair scenarios, only ones i found were Miley and Christina with jimmy fellon in the nyc subway. NYC busks or something like that. Both of them don't need autotune.
Once a young woman worked as an office assistant in our NYC office while she was waiting to make it big on Broadway. One Christmas we had a karaoke party and she just blew everyone's socks off because she was so incredible. She made the hair on the back of my neck stand up. We made her sing every song...no one else was allowed to get on stage after she sang! She got a job as a backup singer for a show soon after that and left the company. Unfortunately, I don't think she ever did "make it big," but it was just astonishing to hear her then.
@@ReactionShot Great comment! in today's world specially in music you can develop a fan base right here on youtube without the "industry" meddling with your talent or steering you into any type of divisive social perspectives just to be published.
Her on Joe Rogan has to be his top 10 interviews ever! How she was homeless, dying in her car outside a hospital when they refused her treatment because she had no money. A good hearted doctor came out to draw blood every few hours and eventually saved her life. They are friends to this day.❤️❤️❤️❤️
It wasn't on Joe Rogan but I heard Jewel talk about that incident, too. She was suffering from lead poisoning and would've died if not for the doctor's intervention if I'm not mistaken
My father was part owner of a night club in Chattanooga and this girl randomly came in one day, said she was passing through between Nashville and Altanta and asked if she could open for the local band that was playing that night for $100. She played a couple of songs and he was like sure! Year or two later, he hears Jewel on the radio and went and dug through a big box of demo cassettes people had left and sure enough, it was her! He has a lot of stories of bands playing before they were big (Hootie, DMB, the list goes on), but this was always his favorite "before they were stars" encounter.
no auto tune, no lip sync... she sounds exactly like she does on her albums. I've had the chance to meet her on several occasions and she is one of the nicest and down to earth persons you will ever meet, she probably had just as much fun as the crowd did.
"For some odd reason" ??? No.. i'ts just that you don't know the reason I'm 49, I've been a musician since i was 14 I've been singing for the last probably 4 or 5 years when you sing and play you understand a few things about music and here are the basics - Music Conveys a message and more importantly A MEANING - This meaning can be different to us all - The communication medium that it uses is EMOTION You get confused because you think it's the words, it's not the words, it plays on your emotions Now jewel's songs deal with what ???? Love, Passion , Despair Life experiences that we can all relate to (TAKE NOTE.... WE CAN RELATE) Then of course you can song structure and lyrics, this is intended by design but then you have Notes POINT IN FACT "For some odd reason I tear up when she hits those notes" Notice you don't need to tell us which notes See, if you were here with me right now i could make you tear up , i could give you a vocal example of a lower register voice singing a certain line and nothing would happen then i could sing the same thing again (slightly tweaked) and in a higher register and you would feel heart tremors and if i continued you'd tear up the trick is. I'm drawing emotion out of you Part ofit has to do with the song and nothing more and art another part has to do with Positive emotional association for the purpose of selling records SEE HOW THAT WORKS ? You cry at the high notes because there are certain notes that sound more pleasing than other notes, it's just that simple and then of course, the song builds you UP TO THAT NOTE emotionally thats' why you cry and since jewel drew the emotion out of you and it was a beautiful emotion YOU THEN RESPOND LIKE THIS...... I love her ❤ See how that works Now you understand why you cry when you don't understand why your'e crying it's because OUR SUBCONCIOUS UNDERSTANDS but our consious mind is like..... why the fuck am i crying all of a sudden well.. that's why Music is an emotion that carries a message, it's that simple and you have no control over it
@@woodey028 You're welcome but yeah, if you ever get a chance to take music lessons and you do it ... say.. for approx 6 months You literally can get to a point where you hit a note for the first time and you make yourself cry and.. it sucks, because hightened emotion kills the tone and delivery of the note so singing is both about ability and ... You have to remember (at the same time) to sing the note beautifully, To feel the music BUT... NOT TO GET CARRIED AWAY EMOTIONALLY , that's probably the hardest part so when you're doing Foolish Games and you get to Theeese Fooolish games Are.... Tearing me apart it's hard not to cry while singing so there's that as well it's like, you do it for the first time and (as you said) you cry but you don't know why, at the same time Your sad, but You're happy and proud of yourself for hitting the note but... again, Your'e sad LOL so.. you don't know how to feel and voila, we end up back to the same point you cry and you don't know why LOL.. Weird Huh After a while you understand it and you learn how to get into the song while PARTIALLy ignoring the emotion then it's a question of.. How do you sing without emotion That's another can of worms
And the 2000's came and ruined music, the dating scene, and society all together. Women we're a lot cooler to talk to as well. Not anymore, everyone scandalous now..
I've always gotten the impression that Jewel is a very down to earth and humble person. This video confirms that 100%! Just the girl next door. What a show that crowd got!
She grew up on that homestead featured in Alaska: The final frontier. Atz daughter. Crazy cuz she was on one episode and I did not put 2 and 2 together.
I've watched this clip so many times over the years that the audience members are starting to seem familiar to me, like I've met them before hah weird?
Out of the tens of thousands of videos I’ve watched in the last decade this is one of my favorites. Edit: to elaborate.. when she performs as Karen it’s one of the purest things I’ve ever seen. She can be her true self and the crowd can respond to the quality of her performance without the baggage of being entertained by a famous professional. Her star power was too overwhelming for them to enjoy the show as Jewel. And they nailed it with the Karen cheering section which allowed them to set this up flawlessly. It was perfect.
@@randomyoutubeperson6954 But it's not your fault. Carry your head high and keep on movin' on. It also DOES give you a platform of your own from which to voice your own views on...whatever. People are almost forced to listen to you, just because they so easily ridicule "her." Work it. You got it.
Well, it should have been a dead giveaway is retrospect. The way she preforms her songs is that of elite seasoned performer. She completely shuts down the room and demands everyone's attention with her voice alone.
The audience interviews really make this video stand the test of time. I’m fascinated by the old guy’s T-shirt and love the fact that he thought Karen was possibly slightly better than Jewel.
I've watched this a few times over the past couple years (revisited)... this was so well produced and put together. Jewel was such a good sport and this ended up being such an awesome production...
Jewel should’ve resisted revealing herself. She arrived as Karen, and should’ve exited as Karen. The legend/myth/mystery of Karen would’ve taken on a life of its own.
grippercrapper good one! Lmao! What I failed to explain (thoroughly), was that it wouldn’t be long, before the people present, discovered that they actually saw Jewel in disguise. I guess, I felt it would amount to a bigger surprise, once everything came to light, a few days or a week down the road.
Jewel saved my life many yrs ago, my wife left me on Christmas morning 2001, I was lost so I decided to drink alcohol till I passed out and would eventually fall into a coma yeah that much booze. I had the radio on and I heard a voice it was Jewels voice, it brought me around and I went on line to find all her works and songs. Now 12 yrs later I am successful and content with my life. A very big turn around for me.I have many friends and associates her voice really did save me. I am eternally grateful. Thank-You Jewel
that's really inspiration. I have a story as well that I wont ever forget about the you were meant for me song. mine was a home invasion robbery, I was tied up beaten, and threatened to be killed, That was one of the songs that played on the radio... even through the ordeal I had enough sense to keep track of the number of songs played so I could have an idea of how long they were inside my house
I love how they both competed on The Masked Singer (also Jewel and Palin's daughter Bristol both competed on DWTS in separate seasons). I wonder if they've ever met
Yes, no auto-tune. The better-off folks had Pentium 233 MHz MMX CPU's and the rest of us had something like a Cyrix P150. Internet access was over phone lines. SoundBlaster 16 sound-cards were overpriced. Constant AOL floppy disks in the mail. Some people had a primary graphics card and a 3DFx Voodoo 2 secondary graphics card. Cathode Ray Tube (CRT) monitors. There was no chance of auto-tune in these days. Doom 2 and Quake 1, yes. Auto-tune, no.
Sorry to pull the band aid off guys auto tune has been around for a real long time, it came from old 70 funk bands wanting to sound electronic. THAT BEING SAID she is amazing and obviously doesn't need it. Auto tune has become a "crutch" as of the past 15 years sadly.
@@YouGotsTheRabies they didn't do it on Earth, most 70s funk was done in space.(sry for the dad joke) It wasn't on computers it was done analog, so I guess I was wrong. It wasn't auto tune, it was post analog tune.
@@YouGotsTheRabies when you think about it, voice boxes are assisted tuning. So you could say "do you feel like we do" has pitch correction and that was 1973.
The best part is 4:03 - 4:07 when Jewel hits the high note a girl in the crowd has this dazed look on her face, mouth hanging open. This is what it means when someone says " It blew My Mind ".
Joe Clavette You know what that means.... it’s their way of taking frustrations out of the song for whatever reasons, also it’s called DRUNKEN KARAOKE: a place where you can sing & NOT a lot of people care..... They are all there to have fun & have a good time.
Been a fan of her's since goodness knows, this is one of my favourite video's going, keep coming back just because I can,2023 and still l smile, Cheers from New Zealand,
Jewel was my favorite for the first 5 years she came out. We are about the same age. Life took me away from music and I haven’t heard her for a while and this video has tears streaming down my face. I love the sincerity and passion In her words and voice. There’s so much more I can’t describe. Thank you for this. I think I’ll meet her one day, maybe when we’re 80.
Anyone who has seen and heard Jewel sing live can testify that camera and audio recordings cannot capture the magic of her live voice especially that note on Foolish Games...brings tears to your eyes.
I heard jaws hitting the floor when she sang THAT note. Anyone sitting on the fence as to her true identity after that needs their hearing attended to. There is only one Jewel. Her genre of music isn't close to my heart but I had all of her early albums and played them endlessly.
This is one of my favorite YT videos of all time and I hadn't watched it in years. I don't know why but I always get tears in my eyes. Jewel and her music is just so wonderful.
12 years later, I still stop to watch when it pops up in my feed. The way she bends the note on "heart" in Foolish Games gives me goosebumps. EVERY. TIME.
If anything? The studio actually holds her back, The song “you were meant for me” On the cd , not the released single, Sounds way more emotionally legit
This could be the only time when you wake up the next morning, and take a look at your random K-Bar pick-up next to you and she is hotter than you remembered.
This is a great, funny, video. But it's also a great example of how natural talent always shines through. Even dressed up as a frumpy frozen foods salesperson, she still shines.
Can’t help but watch this video every time I stumble across it. That one girls jaw drop and total disbelief when Karen hits the high notes always cracks me up.
