Unfortunately those boards are not made by Emerson. You can tell because of the times-new-roman like serif font for all of the silkscreening. Plus, if you look up the UL numbers (they start with E), they point to random companies from overseas. You can find very similar if not near identical boards/inverter systems from the usual places. It's disappointing that Emerson isn't rolling their own boards, or using quality drive components from Toshiba/ABB/Mitsubishi/Yaskawa/Danfoss/Fuji or others. A piece of commercial equipment should be using commercial electronics, not a cheap modular inverter drive ripped out of a trash minisplit from AliExpress.

I was under the impression that typically, the UL file numbers correspond to the PCB material manufacturer and not necessarily the assembled PCBA. Looking it up will tell you what category it's certified under. It seems that Trane/Ingersoll Rand are one of the few manufacturers that have a drive that doesn't look very similar to other minisplit PCBs. The actual components on the boards are probably fine - most of these high power IGBTs/IPMs are still sourced from ST/Infineon for the moment. I think the usual failure points with boards like this tends to be related to water/dirt ingress into the electronics and surge protection as opposed to actual failure of components. It would have been nice to have the boards potted in soft clear silicone, which would make this a lot better while still allowing rework. Such equipment should really be required to be installed with surge protection devices, but often is not. The unit really wasn't designed to accommodate this type of equipment. It looks to me like a factory retrofit based on the bodge board etc. A lot of effort was put into designing the SystemVu controller but unfortunately it uses none of the two way communication with the compressor drive board that would have been possible, which would allow it to log the voltage and current among other useful information e.g. error codes.

@@liminalsunset Also in another line of equipment with a Copeland/Emerson variable scroll I saw they used an all in one device that is the footprint of a VFD. Just power in. Power to the compressor. And your command signals. I guess they chose to do it this way. It is cool in one aspect but also kinda sketch to be all laid out like this.

@@hackfreehvac I remember seeing some videos of one as well. I'm not sure whether these are Emerson's controls or if they're just a customized version of a commercial VFD without the display. I think it makes more sense to use a VFD for 3P induction motors but afaik only Optidrive E3 and the AutomationDirect DURAPulse currently support PMSM motors.

@@liminalsunset Pretty much all major drive manufacturers have drives that support PM motors. Yaskawa, Fuji, Danfoss, Toshiba, ABB, Eaton all do.

how is it communicating? CAN Serial SDLC USB Old School 432? that would be cool how it communicates to each board!

Not sure what protocol. But it says it is a RS485 serial type. It is just from the small "converter board" to the main inverter as the SystemVu has no way to communicate to it. SystemVu just sends a analog 2-10VDC signal to command a desired compressor speed.
