I have no desire to see the Eiffel Tower, any of that stupid shit but I would like to see some of the different things that are done over there like some of the different plumbing fixtures, door locks all kinds of weird stuff that I don’t get to see here, which I see it in some videos. The quality of that equipment seems questionable at best. You did better than most do, thats a fact. These manufacturers seem to have abandoned quality control all together. Just installed and did a factory start up on a Trane Intellipak yesterday. It was put together nicely, but it definitely wasn't without its issues. Another quality video. I agree with the lack of build quality. In January 2022 I installed a Trane CXAF heat pump and then assisted the Trane technician on the startup. The startup went relatively uneventful but the engineer already scratched his head a few times because Trane had changed some things including a poorly documented lockout input. One of those things was that all four crankcase heaters were connected to a single relay and got switched off as soon as the unit went into run. We already guessed that this was going to cause problems but it was designed this way. Out of the 4 compressors they already replaced 6 🫠. The first one went within 72 hours. The second one (on the second stage) went as soon as the first one was replaced. They also had to replace the main control board and had to come back at least a dozen times because of lockout situations of different kinds. We took the 5 year maintenance and warranty plan so not too much worries on the repair costs but the downtime is very annoying and expensive. We had to make sure we always had heat so we were forced to install an additional heat pump and backup gas boilers which had cost us around 40K to do. After 2 years and 4 months we're still experiencing trouble with this unit 😔

Uncle Rick for the save.. Yesterday I was trying to explain my apprentice about the filling chart with the line.. Now he can watch your video.. Great video and keep being you, love the you explain things.. BTW. About the drain, looks US standard, but don't you ever use drains with the little orange ping pong ball.. Then it doesn't matter if the drain dry out, because the ball will prevent air from going in the to wrong way. And filling the unit with water.. Not sure if this is the case with RTU's but it is on big ventilaton systems.

Whoever decided to use zone dampers on sock duct is going to regret it. Those things need to be set up for the fans to run constantly during occupied mode. If the fan is allowed to cycle on and off with the call for cool/heat then every time that zone kicks on, it’s going to sound like someone cracking a bull whip as the zone inflates the duct.

I must say, I’m really surprised to hear and read all the issues with the newer Carrier equipment. Since I’m from Germany and mainly work Chillers I’m not really familiar with Carrier package units (only their chillers which have a god awful controller). I‘m mainly dealing with manufacturers like Ciat, Galletti and since about a year now all our new chillers are Skadec, which is a German company who really go all in on quality. It of course has its cost but they are really thought through, high quality units and also highly costumizable. They offer gliding free cooling, heat recovery, inverter controlled Bitzer or Bock reciprocating or screw compressors and a freely accessible controller.

Thanks for the video Rick, you convinced me that the Jumper king is worth it when i seen it in this video. I have seen it used to find low voltage shorts as well. We too have guys that complain about having to work past 4, i work til the job is done. I get paid no matter what time it is, for us anything past 4 is overtime which is nice. Agathanks for the video, damn shame you had to be quality control for Carrier, gueas someones gotta do it.

I have the Zebra stat. It works well and all but it's bigger and doesn't have any fancy connections and didn't come with magnets. I had to JB weld some big magnets on it because it's pretty weighty. It does have built in activity checker (which can let you know if the thermostat is calling for heat / cool etc...).

Man! I only buy carrier equipment, im a certified carrier contractor. I've even installed a few of these style RTUs before, I've never seen quality control this bad before on carrier. Lennox 20ton split was the worst I've seen personally.

Rick, I just did a replacement of 32 Carrier RTUs. The same mixed air temperature sensor was broken in the same place on 11 of them. Thankfully, they were nothing more than a SPST “safety” that wet could put a jumper across to make work. Some that had electric resistance heat kits (field install) came with wiring harnesses that didn’t fit anything, anywhere and had to be rewired to work at all. Same unit model, same heater model, didn’t know from one to the next what’s working or needed redone.

I cut out a lot of my feelings on how this thing was built and designed. We are a Carrier dealer so it really looks bad, but whose fault is that? We didn’t build it. 🤔 I didn’t call Carrier out like I did Mitsubishi….at least far as you know 🤫🤫😂😂

The exterior ducting was insulated. You can see it on the beginning of the video where I showed fixing the economizer wire. It’s insulated on the inside. Once inside the building, I do not believe it was insulated.

It’s sad 😔. I remember in the 90s when Lennox left Grove city outside of Columbus Ohio. They were the first to move away. Like I said it’s a race to the bottom, they try to cut cost at any cost to make the most money. In the end, no one has a good job to buy their products and everyone loses.

I got a lot out of this video. Carrier used to consider themselves the best quality unit money could buy. Without your thorough startup checks this customer would have nothing but headaches and bad feelings. Seeing this type of poor quality everywhere now. I’ve been buying every tool you’ve recommended. Please keep up the good videos as there’s not much out there like this for commercial/industrial guys.

@HVACRSurvival just found your channel and love it! I'm a Facilities worker and love to learn as much as I can about HVAC. We are always calling techs for issues on our chillers (Carrier) but I'm needing to learn more of the control side of things. Multiple VAV's are not working right. Don't know if it's the temp sensors or the actuators that are at fault, or both. Been a process. Thanks for the great video.

High and low settings for the economizer is only available if the Jade is set for 2 speed fan. When there is only one set point available, then Jade is set for single speed fan.
@HVACRSurvival
@HVACRSurvival 4 месяца назад
That makes sense. Kinda weird it wasn't set up for that with it being ECM. I didn't have time to read over the manual this day. But I just did a Siemens controller recently and I believe it said to set it for single speed.
@jrsmyth9761
@jrsmyth9761 4 месяца назад
Yes, it does seem odd that it was not factory set for 2 speed fan!!! Everyone that I have done has been 2 speed from the factory. However, with the crap you found on those units, it's no surprise. As for the Siemens, went to the Carrier dealer gathering and they were promoting them. Seems like they are a combo of Belimo and JADE. I think the neat thing is the ability to have NFC via the app and have saved set ups. Then all you do is upload the save settings to the control. I believe you can save multiple set ups.

Worst part is the price tag of these so called high end units and they all seem to have low end problems and quality. Coils still leak, terrible wire routing, cheap components that fail quickly or right out of the box.
