Hello everyone! Carrots are just one of my most favorite things to grow. This year, I decided to do an updated cornstarch method for seeding carrots video after trying it for the first time last year. Since that first video, I've gotten better at the process and have now used it to grow radishes, spinach, forget-me-nots and alyssum in addition to the carrots.
I'll start by explaining the process of creating your cornstarch mixture. It's super easy to make the gel, but you will need to keep your eyes on the pot for a few minutes while you're stirring. Then we'll wait a long time - even an hour or two - for the mixture to cool completely to room temperature. We don't want to injure those little seeds before planting!
Finally, we'll take our mixture outside and pipe it into a prepared bed. I'll use a pastry/icing bag, but a ziploc bag will do just fine. Cover your seeds with a little additional dirt, water them in and you should start to see germination within 12-14 days.
The cornstarch mixture will help not only to spread out the seeds so that a little can go a longer way, but the soaking and the cornstarch help to keep moisture around those little seeds. You'll still want to try and keep your soil moist during germination, but it won't hurt if you forget for a few days.
Happy growing!
