Carrots in Corn Starch: New and Improved

Hello everyone! Carrots are just one of my most favorite things to grow. This year, I decided to do an updated cornstarch method for seeding carrots video after trying it for the first time last year. Since that first video, I've gotten better at the process and have now used it to grow radishes, spinach, forget-me-nots and alyssum in addition to the carrots.
I'll start by explaining the process of creating your cornstarch mixture. It's super easy to make the gel, but you will need to keep your eyes on the pot for a few minutes while you're stirring. Then we'll wait a long time - even an hour or two - for the mixture to cool completely to room temperature. We don't want to injure those little seeds before planting!
Finally, we'll take our mixture outside and pipe it into a prepared bed. I'll use a pastry/icing bag, but a ziploc bag will do just fine. Cover your seeds with a little additional dirt, water them in and you should start to see germination within 12-14 days.
The cornstarch mixture will help not only to spread out the seeds so that a little can go a longer way, but the soaking and the cornstarch help to keep moisture around those little seeds. You'll still want to try and keep your soil moist during germination, but it won't hurt if you forget for a few days.
Happy growing!

One rainy afternoon I tried this: Soak a couple of sheets of paper towel in gel. Cut into long strips about 1 1/2 -2”” wide. Using tweezer and or brush place seeds on to strips. When dryish plant strips in prepared and watered bed. Lightly cover with sifted soil. May use row cover to shade til germination takes place. My rainy day fiddly Project saved me hours of thinning!😊

I've heard about this method but never seen it done on a detailed basis like this. All the salient details clearly presented. Bravo!! NOW maybe I can grow a flamin' carrot!! This video was time well spent.

You know, I've never tried fall carrots. But might this year since I have room. I've heard you can overwinter your carrots to save on storage and that might be fun to try too. 😊

Seems easier and less messy to just by the seeds in pelletized form. That's what big aggro uses, to improve machine spreadability for notoriously tiny seeds like carrots.

How long did you soak the seeds?
@onemellowmarigold
@onemellowmarigold 4 месяца назад
Hi! I apologize, I had thought I responded earlier, but I may have just responded in my head, lol. I soaked them for about 2 days. Long enough for about half the seeds to have just started germinating. The seeds get really delicate once they've all germinated well and so I don't soak too much longer than that. If you give it a try, let me know how it turns out!

How many seeds are typically in a commercial packet? I bought carrot seed from a grower on ebay at approximately 200 seeds per bag.
@onemellowmarigold
@onemellowmarigold Месяц назад
Hi! Those little envelopes you buy at the store are usually 1.5 grams and that could be anywhere from 200-800 seeds per gram, depending on variety. What type of carrots are you growing this year?

Scatter put a board on top, remove board after danger of first frost and thin through the summer, and use the trimmings. I get an abundance of very large carrots. Got no time for such extra work as this
@onemellowmarigold

The beauty of gardening is that there are so many great ways to grow! You've got your way and I've got mine. I personally think all that thinning is "extra work" but you do you. There's no need to tear down someone else's choice. If it's not for you, just keep scrolling, sugar pop. I hope you have a great day.
