In the 70's I was stationed at Surfside and had a 66 Olds Toranado. It was one of two American front wheel drive cars at the time. It had bald tires on the front and I would back into the loose sand on the beach but keep my front tires on the hard. People would warn me that I was going to be stuck but they where always amazed when I would pull out without spinning a tire. The bald tires would help get through areas like this because they didn't dig down into the sand if very light throttle was used but it wasn't fun to drive on the pavement in the rain.
We went out to San Luis pass a couple weeks ago and it was so soft at the entrance and so many stuck SUV’s and 2wd’s. I have never seen it like that in the past 15 years of going down there. I was aired down, 4WD, lockers engaged and I even had a bit of trouble.
Was on vacation down there from Ohio this past June. Spent a few hours off and on pulling out minivans and fwd cars from this spot after having pizza on the beach for dinner with the wife
