This is a story of one man's 28 year journey to own a Porsche 930. Jim Goodlett's 1984 grey market 930 Turbo is a beautiful example of a classic Porsche 911, but it also represents the accomplishment of a goal he set for himself as a young man who could only dream of one day owning this supercar.
Many thanks to Jim Goodlett for sharing his time and his story.

I had the same showroom experience with a Porsche salesman in the late sixties in Oklahoma. I was about 15 years old and bicycled to the Porsche dealership. The salesman treated me like a potential customer and gave me the full tour of the 911. At the end, I said I obviously couldn't afford one. The salesman said, "Someday you will, someday you will." Now I own two.

I did a similar thing......when I was 18 I purchased a workshop manual for a 911 and read every word in it......I was 45 by the time I could afford to buy one to restore.

Its funny because Porsche has a commercial about a kid seeing a 911 and saying he will be back for it in 10 years. Its so true.

I love all types of air-cooled Porsche, I truly respect and envy this man as a Porsche fanatic. My dream is to own a 1992 964 Turbo S 3.3 litre in dark navy color with BBS LM wheels on it, manual shift of course.

You will. I was just like him. And you. At 30-something I finally got an 87 Carrera. Wonderful cars. Once you fall for it, you never stop. Since 8 I have been like this man. I am 41. Nothing's changed.

The 3.2's and most other air-cooled ones are rising in value. You will NEVER be sorry you got it I promise you. Just the ONLY car for me. 911. Even a 25 year old one. Fantasic! Be sure to post it when finally get there!

Living the dream as a 17yr old in 1977 driving the worlds hottest cars at a posh club in Miami. The 911,Turbo, or Targa were the ultimate. Watching the tach and speedo needles swing side by side towards redline, then snatch 2nd gear as that torque squats the ass end and you take off again, what a rush! I knew better to ever wanting to own one of these beasts!

This really is what Porsche is all about. No other car, no Ferrari, no Lamborghini, no Aston Martin gets under your skin like a Porsche. This in no way means that those aren't good cars, Ferrari in particular has produced and continues to produce what are arguably some of the best cars in the world, but you don't connect to them like you do with a Porsche. The Porsche bug is infectious in a way you can't explain. You might *want* a Ferrari or Aston, but you *yearn* for a Porsche.

I'm 24 now, and my 'realistic' dream car is a 964 Carrera. I'd love a Turbo or an RS, but they're crazy money. I'd be more than happy with a Carrera.. Any colour, preferably black interior but that can be changed.. 2 or 4 wheel drive, but has to be a coupe. One way or another I'll have one before I'm 30. I've worked hard enough so far to have my 'realistic' dream bike, so I'm on the right track :)

Keep it up man! I bought a 91' C2 Coupe early last year and it's been amazing :) However take your time to learn as much as you can about the car before you buy one as it's becoming harder to find one in decent condition. I unfortunately didn't take that advice so my journey has been a roller-coaster but 911experience.co.nz was born out of my troubles. Wish you all the best!

In 2011 I made the tragic mistake of being afraid of purchasing a 993 when I had the money. I would later pay for that mistake ($30k) by purchasing in 2017. Put your mind to it and it will become a reality.. just don't hesitate when that time comes or it could cost you many thousands of dollars as prices are still increasing.

My uncle let me drive his 930 turbo once and I spun out (mildly wet road) even though I thought I was driving conservatively. Fantastic car but also one of the most unforgiving.

I had a 3.2 Targa, lovely car but the.930 is magic fantastic balanced shape and super charged engine... I simply love Porsche up to 1995, all of them, a love impossible to describe to a stranger but so immediately recognizable on other fanatics.

I had a very similar experience. A friend of mine had gotten a 1987 BMW 535is, black over cream leather, when he was 16 (the car was about as old as he was), and I fell in love immediately. I thought of it often. Fast forward a decade and when looking for a new car I stumbled across a now, very rare, 1987 BMW 535is, black over cream, the perfect BBS wheels, extremely low miles, and exactly the price I had the budget for. I took a road trip that weekend and bought it; felt it was meant to be.

Really nice video. I like how you went to the dealership in your highschool years. I was the same. I went to the local Porsche specialist Again and Again just looking at the cars and enjoying the sound when one came into the yard. For me the dream came true with a Carrera 3.2 Coupe. Had it for 7 years. Still miss it today.

byf43 between the Houston Ferrari/Lambo dealer and that of the Porsche dealer, my Friday eves in high school were filled with loads of dreams...though in the open hours I was probably a bit of a bother ever so oft, both places treated me as if I was a customer...that said, after hours when I would stop by, am quite sure the lads cleaning the showroom windows were not happy with my paw prints all over them as I looked in oft!

You can do it man! I found my 1977 Porsche 911S last August for only $9500, and she is in fantastic shape. Just be patient and save those pennies and you too can accomplish this dream. I did. :)

Very nice car and story. I have one myself. Mine is an 87 silver 930. I saw the 930 first when I was in High School in a magazine and it was silver. I was instantly in love. I told myself then and there that I would own one of these 930's some day. I got mine when I was forty years old. Twenty some years later. I am now forty four years old and I own two Porsches. I could afford a new one but I really like the classic Porsches.

Congrats to you Geza Bereczky jr. ...the 86 to 89 variants had the bigger aire vents for a workable AC...the previous years Type 930 has minuscule air vents that are tantamount to an asthmatic man blowing across an ice cube with a straw...lucky for me there is the 2/60 AC that works all the time (2 windows down, at least 60mph) :)

great little video, thanks for sharing. Ive had mine since 2002, 1984 carrera 3.2, spent loads on making it stand out, and it does! Flat six air cooled 3/3.2 is the best of all the versions made. And 915 box may be 'agricultural' but treated with respect it is solid and trusty.

I had the exact same sales experience as a 15year old. I bicycled to the Porsche dealership (this would be 1966) and got the same treatment from the salesman. Given that Porsche did a commercial about this type of experience, I wonder if they didn't coach their salesmen to give the full pitch to young Porsche enthusiasts. At the end of the sales pitch, I admitted to the salesman that I could not afford buy such a car. He said, "someday you will, someday you will".

I have lusted after one since I was five and I got a ride in my uncles 73. Im now 43 and do not think ill ever get to own one. I have driven my buddies Cayman S multiple times but its not the same visceral feel of an old air cooled car.

I owned this same car for twelve years and and drove it 50k miles, a 1984 930 Grey market. My impression, at least as compared to the 981 cayman gts, is it is not even close. The cayman GTS is easily two the three times although I say five times the visceral feel especially noise wise as the 930. Noise is 90 percent of what I remember when I drive both of these incredible cars. The 930 is a freeway and a sweeper turn type car, no doubt a classic for the car collector types that like to park and look and drink coffee.

Almost all Porsches are different. There were so many colors and options, that no two are identical. This car is 28 years old and still in great shape. He'll drive it till' he can no longer drive. Enjoy it buddy. Enjoy EVERY minute of it...

Congratulations you own one of the greatest Porsches ever made I would give anything to own one it's been my dream to ever since I was a kid I know exactly what you're talking about I saw an old school 911 from the 80s and it literally stops me and my tracks I would love to have one someday I don't even care if it's just a Carrera without the turbo I just love that body style the most iconic car ever produced hands down. wow, this is just like me when I bought my 2012 SRT challenger. I almost bought it back last year oct 2013, just have to wait a bit till I try and either find it or get a new one before it goes out of production/becomes the "Cuda" or what ever they plan to do.

Amazing car. Probably my fav old fashion'd car. The best Porsche has ever made in my opinion. Just as the guy in the video, I also dream to be the lucky owner of this beauty one day. My goal would be to be able to get in within a few years from now, as it doesn't cost that much, around 35.000 euros. Stylish as hell.

+Vylkeer I agree with you, but the price for the car is so wrong. 35000€ doesn't even get you a good carrera. 930 Turbos (depending on condition) can easily cost you between 50-80k€

Devl Donkey I've found many insertions online of this car costing between 25 - 30k euros. Also being in really good conditions. I'm referring to the model shown in the video, not more expensive versions of the Carrera.

+Vylkeer The model in the video is a 930 Turbo, today's prices range from 80k to 150k, you won't find it for less, sorry to disappoint you there.

hagswiss Well then it's not the same model. I've found on ebay and other selling websites some 911s 1980s Targa for around 25k - 30k. There's no point in paying 150k for this car. A Ferrari is worth that much, in terms of market value.

i can understand his passion and personal commitment clearly, although my porsche story is somewhat different. at 16 i took my uncles 951s roaring down PCH through south laguna. almost immediately after that experience, i swore to myself that i would one day own my very own porsche. at 23, i purchased an '86 911 targa which i still own to this day. porsches are certainly not for everyone...but offer the potential to be everything to some.
