For some of us, they aren't hobbies, they're a necessity. I have lived out in the country my entire life. I drive hundreds of miles a week just getting back and forth to work, taking kids around to where they need to be, getting groceries or a new washing machine, etc. We HAVE to have them. There's no uber or taxi, even if you could afford them. Even though it's a necessity, you might as well have a nice one.
I mean this video doesn't make ANY sense for real car guys.... It's only for social media guys that want to be famous and they don't know shit bout cars and don't even enjoy having them just wanna be like other famous car guys.
Also cars, I've sunk too much cash in my build (years ago before social media were a thing) and nowadays I wouldn't even consider modifying my car beyond a chiptune and some good rubber. And I've got more money than I had before. The reason was because I thought the car was my identity before. How good the car was was indicative to how I thought people saw me. That of course was an illusion and all the trouble I did was wasted. Today I'm less insecure about my identity, My car doesn't portray who I am, not even a little bit. I still like cars, but it's so much more fun now that I can enjoy them without that selfimposed pressure. I think that's what he is trying to convey.
Self awareness and accountability is hard to find in the car scene. Everyone is addicted to trying to become the next greatest build that they lose all sense of accountability
I've been a car enthusiast for the past 20 years. I've learned to just appreciate what I have, which is a beat out 06 mustang gt and another 99. I invested in myself and can fix just about everything on it. That's how you achieve happiness as a car guy. Good video, wish you guys the best.
My first few years I street race my 5.0. Realistically I put my family first and sold it after my reputation spread. I took a 14 year hiatus and got back on the horse. I put over $75,000 into my new build. But I lost interest in being a part of the community and their worthless Frankenstein builds. It’s just myself and my car now.
ill ad to that. im in the same boat. and now at 35 years old. there's something nostalgic about having the Honda Civic with a 6 speed I would admire in high school (2006) tbh nobody gives af about what you drive. everybody is in their own world. so once you learn to appreciate what you have. its the best. I feel 18 when I get in it. its slow as dog ish but that's fine with me. it has the sounds, the smells and the clunkiness of a car of my day you won't won't get now.. I call that the difference between a "enthusiast" and actual "carguy" enthusiast want the flashy fastest whatever for insta clout. but real car guys enjoy the aspect of driving any vehicle. that's a whole other topic that's generational also lol.
Well said. I have long realized how impossible rare my opportunity is. And it makes zero sense financially or emotionally to put this much obsession into building a rotary. Thankfully my happiness comes from self growth and pushing my limits. Which is why im not the best youtuber. Im not doing the superlative build for the views. its a byproduct. im doing it for my happiness and curiosity. RU-vid second. But im so fortunate that it allows me to make a monstrosity. It is like chasing a high though. I knew the night as i was driving back from racing Ken that i would be focused on the next big thing because that race wouldnt satisfy for as long as i was dreaming about doing it to begin with. Ive made peace with chasing the devil and found a way to be happy. And a way to use my restlessness or unhappiness to be productive and push myself further.
Your videos to me show realism and passion. You don’t flash cash, you buy as needed to achieve your personal goals and share your story unfiltered to the world which allows many to either experience or learn from your build. Thank you Rob 🙂
Rob, I love your work best cause for the first time I watching all of RU-vid, your channel gives me passion for something I thought I'd lost. Cars, we do it be cause we love cars. It's not about beating the best or even being the best but being the best version of ourselves. Reaching the heights we BELIEVE we truly can reach. Taking on those hard task not because they're easy but because they're hard. Keep up the good work and fighting the good fight. Your car and ability to work on cars and learn on the fly gives me hope and passion. Be thankful for the position you're in. To try out your passion without worrying about the other. Your passion pays you. I wish I had that position. I'd be a mad scientist in the garage all the time. Its my zen. The happiness for me is seeing what I built come into fruition. Keep being great bro!
Extremely well-put together. It is funny enough a vicious circle and both the content consumers and content creators are the victim of the social media drive. Do what makes you happy when it comes to cars. If it's making other people happy in the process, then that's a nice bonus.
Thank you for making this video. I always dreamed that I could drift. I saved up and bought a 350z and sure enough, I could actually do it. But it was kind of like meeting a hero. We began to take it more seriously. We rushed to make it to events and my car was never working right. It took the joy out of it. Someday I want to compete. But I want it to be because I’m at the track to enjoy drifting, and it just so happens to be in a competitive environment. For now I sim race. Awaiting my return behind the wheel of a real car.
mid-late 80's was doing it with a modded Datsun 620 long bed pickup, the extra 10" wheelbase made it very predictable+consistent. there's lots to be said for "keep it simple stoopit", it put up with being hammered and rarely ever broke. recommend for a fun "slideways seat time" budget build project. L20-B giving +165 whp, 4 speed from a 1600 wagon for lower closer ratios, no spare no tailgate no rear bumper no smog no AC, lots of weight stripped. late 70's Datsun was like playing with a Chevy, near anything bolts together! power sliding and "slideways" was before anyone called it drifting, hehe so what.
Kind of similar scenario. Ive always loved racing games. Bought an Altezza track car. Cost me pretty decent money. The heartbreak of trying to get things ready for track days and things going wrong, mechanical failures, accidents. Did it for 3 years and eventually sold it. Bought a direct drive setup and just sim race now. Its astonishing how close it feels to real life. Assetto Corsa feels great. The only IRL track experience im missing is Nordschliefe. Absolutely going to bring a car there.
I am so Happy with my GR86. I Drooled over the CRX when in my Early 20's and Never Got One. Got a Mk7 GTI With All The Bells and Whistles as a Mid Life Crisis. Got More Tickets Than Ever. It was a Blast. Messing with my Phone I Totalled It. I am Tempted to Do Some Things to my 86 but I am 61 Now and my Priority is Travel to World Heritage Sites. This Reflection on; Ego, Fame, Supremacy, Etc is Excellent. Stay Balanced. There is More to Life.
Yes, I agree My philosophy Is to use that desire to Always Better myself: work hard and spend time and Money on your hobby not for social media clout, not to be the Dude having the 1000+HP Supra "look at me", but to improve yourself and achieving your goals. Sure, maybe you Just wanted that car at the start and now that you have It you want It faster, appreciate what you achieved so far and don't set your standards to the ones of "big people of RU-vid" Dream big but Remember to be Happy of what you have done so far, and most importantly do It for YOURSELF, you'll never feel Happy if you think happyness Will come when people "envy" you or when they'll think you're successful, It's YOU Who Need to think YOURSELF as successful, not others
if you think about it, humans are very selfish creatures. there’s never a moment where we think “okay, I have everything I want, I’m done now”. we always want more things, better things, etc. and it comes to a point where people’s happiness becomes reliant on the next cool thing they do or buy, but the happiness is only temporary. it takes a long time to break that cycle. the only way to really be happy is when you’re happy with yourself, and you can only do that when you aren’t reliant on other people or other things. at the end of the day, the most important thing in our life is ourself (as selfish as that sounds)
True , the path of materialism which is never enough ...Where is the sense of the community we all want in this Age of individuality . friendship and life experiences are the Goal IMO
@@fullsend9076 Even if you don't do it for others approval it still wont make you happy, sure material things can give you moments of happiness but it will never make you truly happy thats all about mental health or something.
This has to be the most motivating video I heard. Story: I use to be all in on the car community, I hanged out with the OG Gold Rush Rally guys that you see on RU-vid, visited all the coolest car shows in FL, raced multiple cars race tracks, personally know an F1 Racing Manager, I drove nice super cars, what they are all looking for is people to be around, not to be lonely, to be with someone like them so they can finally have someone to relate to. But once the cars are gone, life and circumstances take over. You are so different and so cool, that you are lonely, i have never felt so depressed as when I made the car I drove determine me . Enjoy life, your family, and the people that care for you, don’t let social media transform and stomp your life. Take an internet fast or social media 1 month fast. That works amazing miracles. Good luck, and thanks fro reading my story :)
In October I turned 30 and all I wanted to do was go for a drive for my birthday.. No cameras, no social media, no anything. I had friends ask "where's your camera stuff? Aren't you going to film?" My response was "I literally never get to enjoy my actual project cars all by myself and not for the camera. " It's a thought that is rare nowadays as a RU-vidr in the auto world. Great work my friends.
"I literally never get to enjoy my actual project cars all by myself and not for the camera. " and the drive is where it all started. What its all about. This video and your comment were a nice wake up call.
I remember seeing you rolling into IA in Atlanta back in 2015 I believe. Was such a big headache getting in cause their systems wouldn't recognize the tickets due to crappy internet signal haha
It's funny, I'm not a RU-vidr or Instagramer but because I'm in the middle of boosting my car, every time I work on it I think to myself, "shouldn't I be filming this?" But there's a quiet satisfaction is just thinking "nah" and getting on with it. I'm building the car for myself to enjoy, and that's all that matters.
Great video this. I'm super fortunate to be able to own my dream car, an R32 GTR. Outside a couple of videos, I've made an effort to keep it off RU-vid because everyone has their own opinion on what it should/shouldn't be and they all disagree with each other. The best moments I have in the car are (as you said) when I go out for a drive with no cameras, phone on silent and just enjoy what the car means to me. Also regarding "MUST DO THE BIG BUILDS". This is kinda the reason why I've never tried to do my own content with irl cars. I know the majority of my audience doesn't care about me cleaning up an old MX5, so it stops be from doing the content that I'd like + more importantly, the car doesn't get worked on. It's a balance that I think every video creator/social media nerd struggles to get right.
One thing I've noticed after watching youtube for a while is that I enjoy watching people who look like they truly have fun doing videos. Its not something you can fake, you feel it while watching the video. But at the same time, people really won't watch things unless they're over the top or really special. Its a really thin line of balancing and its hard to keep that balance. Like super fkn hard. You have to keep things fun enough for your self but at the same time keep things fun for the people who watch. Personally I feel like the best way to keep up with youtube is to stay connected with your viewers so that they can hear what it is you enjoy. Although some people like to keep their private life/feelings to them self and put up with a persona. But that's preference for each individual. And like I said it harder to show your viewers that you're really happy. Idk man I just had to rant a bit. I feel like you are very honest and balance fun in a good way ^^ Keep doing what you're doing! I'll be rooting for you irl and ingame haha
This advice is perfect. I just recently bought an S2K and I plan to return it to stock. I've been called crazy because of that, but in the end its my car and my money. And I want to experience this car as it once was.
That's why I bought the BRZ. At the end of the day, it fit what I wanted. Small, lightweight, 2 door, rear wheel drive, affordable. yeah yeah its slow in a straight line, but I find it fun to drive and that's all that matters. Slow off the line, quick in the corners.
You are part of the creator culture selling the "cool" factor of mod life, builds, give aways and click bait. The very thing this video is trying to warn against.
I recently inherited my dad's car. He died from cancer 3 weeks ago and he had a 1989 Renault 12. It's by no means a sports car, but he bought it for dirt cheap after being parked in an old garage for over a decade (I'm new to car stuff, but is this considered a barn find?) He spent 4 years fixing it, making it run and even painted it. This year my dad came home extremely happy saying it passed the technical test it needs for it to be legal to drive in the streets. The car is far from perfect still and soon I'll have the paperwork so it's finally mine, and I expect to finish it up and have it like my dad wanted it :) I won't do anything crazy to it. I live in Argentina and don't have the kind of money needed for that, but I will enjoy fixing up this car with my friend and will be very happy once I'm done. My dad wanted me to have the car and sell it as a classic when enough time passed, maybe it's too common to be a classic but we'll see. I miss my dad.
My car makes me very happy tbh. Whenever I drive it, it's like a form of therapy to get away from all the BS that happens in life. It sounds cheesy, but when you like your car and like driving it, it's like nothing else matters when you get behind the wheel. Big stress relief
I agree with this 100%. But also cars are a source of frustration. When something breaks, a new part doesn't fit or you get busted doing something stupid it can get demoralising and get you down. But I guess that's how we appreciate how happy they make us. There's no ups without the downs
When I'm not working I'm either at my computer or out driving. What's making me even happier is to know that all of those things are paid for by myself, alone. It gives you a feeling of accomplishment. I might only be 19 years old but I work, by far, the most hours in our household (mother, stepfather, friend, me). I might not work every day sometimes but I don't have normal work hours. I'm.a truck driver. I don't stop when I'm tired. I stop when I'm done...
He got me when he said, "you can spend 100k on a Lambo, but is it even turbo?" That right there put it all in perspective, you can spend any amount of money on car and someone will try to find a way to bring you down. They wouldn't understand how hard I had to work for what I have.
@@tylerthenormal9059 almost the point. What im saying is, it doesn't matter how far you go, there will always be new heights to reach, and with new heights there will always be someone trying to drag you back down or kick you down. I managed to buy my first car off a lot 6 months ago. Its a 33k+ car. It doesn't have all the bells a whistles but thats ok. I worked very hard and I didn't ever once think that it would be possible for me to obtain a car that I knew I truly wanted. It doesn't have to be the best or most turned or modded. Its the fact that I came from owning a bike and riding the bus to buying a car brand new off the lot. That to me is every thing. I didnt think I would make it as far as I did in this life.. people can hate on me if I don't get the best that the best can offer. This is good enough for me. I stay humble and count my blessings. Ignore the trash talk, haters, and negative comments. If I can be happy, so can anyone
Yeah you’re right if you buy a cla 200 why you don’t get that cla 45 amg version! If you get the cla 45 OMG you didn’t have the c43 amg? So dumb!! Haters gonna hate! And you have to be strong enough to don’t fail down to their comments and critics, you can be happy with your old bicycle
It's less about others and more about you comparing yourself to others. If you care that other lambos have turbos and yours doesn't, it is your problem. if you care that your car doesn't have a turbo because your car is slow without one, then that is a valid reason to care, because it's about your enjoyment and not about others. the bottom line is, do what makes you happy, not what makes others give you an internet point.
I see it as quite the opposite. It's all about the solitude, the personal enjoyment of a brilliant driving experience on a weekend, after a tough day of work, or on the back roads when running an errand.
I think is much more than that! I never heard or saw someone on the internet share something that i felt with a car I. It was perfect for me, just lacked 100hp (it had 130). Everything bought was for me, for my pleasure, the suspension, brakes and anything related with the way it looked. Never for others.
@@gerekappo am i wrong because i like driving shitboxes fast, there easy to fix and its no big deal if you blow the engine. I have had nice cars but they always feel numb because you dare not drive them to the limit.
@@garygluebag4825 the cars i’ve had the most fun with have also been the cheapest. Best one has got to be the 1984 BMW 323i I paid one hamburger for. Kick ass winter drifter but a shit car.
You can blame social media and the creator culture of many who glamorize "things" over reality. Those who tie their identities to what they own, the click bait, the views all of the non-sense disposable trash content. Cars are hunks of metal, nothing more, they are there to enrich your life, not to define it.
Well easy to say when you have a personality haha! Some of us need cars to be defined into a genre of ownership. But in all seriousness, you're right. No one will ever be happy with what someone else own. I was fortunate enough to not care when I started and I still don't care which has been pretty great. I'm sure having driven as many vehicles as you have, its the pleasure of experience that creates the draw I suppose. I have had the opportunity to watch what having a car insta does, to the actual car and sadly its not pretty. The quest for likes, leaves decent cars looking like trash, held together by zipties, barely passing safety, all in the name of being ratty "cause its cool" or worse, photoshopping the imperfections away to create the ideal fashionista shitbox that can barely get past 4000RPM's cause it has a straight pipe. If someone cares about cars it shows but most can't tell. When folks care about their image around cars as an identity, well it shows.
My car makes me happy. It's not different to other cars on the way it looks and it feels like therapy for me when I go out for a drive. Takes my mind away from heartbreak and struggles.
Cars will absolutely make you happy. The problem is unattainable or unreasonable goals, and that applies to any hobby/obsession. The problem these days is people forget what made cassic hotrodding so good, which was the concept of really good ideas anyone can do on an average budget for a hobby. My all black 2014 GT was the alternative dream car to one of my actual dream cars (either a 08/09 Bullit or a real classic Dodge Charger like my dad had), and with the red accents on the headlights, blacked out exterior, and free flow exhaust, it turns heads when other cars that cost way more are ignored. It's loud, has great power, and gives me plenty of satisfaction as I see people stop and look on the street. It's such an icon, they *know* what it is. On those merits, I'm satisfied with the car, but I don't want all bark and no bite. I have goals to expand the rear tires from 295 to 325 radials in the rear ($1250?), replace my radio that just died ($600), get an e85 tune ($150), and if I ever find a get lucky, a Tremec transmission (over $2000) and a Procharger ($5000+.) I juet want to put more expensive cars and Chevys to shame. Should be reasonable. Should I ever strike it rich, I'll buy an actual dream car like a $150,000 Cobrajet, and I can grease Teslas all day long. Until then, I will appreciate what I have and be humble.
YES! Cars can make you a bit happier, but only AFTER you've figured out how to make top dollar--and by then, the odds are pretty good you're getting older and will sacrifice everything for the biggest possible house and a couple kids you don't want because "SHE wanted it." If you haven't nailed that 100+ grand a year job yet, you can sort of just piddle around with cars. This shit is *expensive,* even if it's a 20-year old car in decent shape and all you want is to put some rims on it and maybe install a decent stereo. Your car can, and probably will, eat up more of your life than ANY physical possession has any business consuming--even a house! That's time that you could have spent pursuing a $100,000 job that you hate (like any job) and have the money to pursue a car that you actually like instead of pissing away a decade of your life fucking around with a car because you can't afford the one you really want. They're just cars. Some of them are cool cars, but they're still just cars.
I think your guys video are partly so popular because they're different. You buy cheap, unknown cars (maybe not the miatas) and just do your thing your way. Maybe not as professional as it could be. But you're happy with it. At least it seems. And for me it kinda shows that you can be really happy and have a good time with a kei bus.
That RX-7 you have, is beautiful. No matter what, just walking up to that car, taking a seat in it, should give you the same joy as it did many days before that. I drive a Civic Type-R FK2. Not expencive, not luxury, but that car was my dream back in 2015, and i achieved that dream last year. Every single time i walk up to it, i'm filled with joy. Every single time i take a seat in it, turning it on, hearing the engine, getting it on the road and just driving around, it fills me with happiness, every single time. you don't need to spend more, you don't need acknowledgement, your car doesn't have to be the fastest, most expencive, most beautiful. It's only got to give you happiness, and get you from A to B. I wouldn't trade my Type-R for anything in the world, because it's my car.
Theese are the kind of videos that I appreciate the most, because of how unique, sincere and honest with sharing your feelings they are, and for how human they feel.
For real, I was feeling terrible for having "just" a Fiesta ST, it's not going to ever impress people, while for my own enjoyment, it's an incredible car.
The hardware doesn't make us happy, playing our favorite games to escape reality makes us happy. Same with any other hobby, sure you need some of the necessities first, once you do it's the activity once you're in that makes it fulfilling. I went down that dark hole of feeling bad I didn't have the best thing, but my little budget PC can still play the games I like and I enjoy driving my Mazda 3 hatch almost as much as when I had a WRX wagon. I enjoyed driving itself more than what I was driving.

@Lil Kabob It's meant obviously when you're trying to do something for yourself, something that should make you happy. And of course, it's not like if you're a drug addict or something like this you should keep doing it, obviously you need a bit of brain to survive anyways. Either way, I am trying my best at actually not giving a fuck about what people think, just like I preach.
The best car lessons are life lessons. The true happiness was never the cars, it was the experiences we had with them along the way. Thanks for sharing this, Ben!
This commentary really resonated with me. Over a decade ago, I used to have a huge group of friends that were collectively into the racing scene. We used to travel every month to autocross, the drag strip, car shows, and just driving up the mountain. But as the years went by; those same people acclimated to new and differing priorities that took them away from the hobby. We all slowly drifted away, until there was just now you, and your car that you dumped tens of thousands of dollars into and the group and the motivations of doing what you used to do no longer exist, because even you have changed. I used to daily my modded car until I bought a motorcycle, and even bought a new car to replace it recently. Now, it's being sold at a huge loss. But when I look back at the pictures of it; I remember the experiences I got to have, the friends that I made, and the joys of what it was to be a part of that community. That in the end, was worth the price of admission.
I used to be a street car guy, got into off roading. Now off roading is expensive and you break a ton of shit but man.....Put that fucker on a trailer behind the truck, take a friday off and show up at the park Thursday night to set up camp for two full days of wheeling before you gotta go home... people are always there and welcoming, first rule is to never leave anyone in the woods. Dude, its a motorsports junkies heaven. From shitbox budget xj's with welded diffs and used tires to 150k ultra 4 cars, everyone parties their ass off at camp and rides like there is no tomorrow.
According to research done by psychologist, the following activities make people happy: - socializing with friends - working toward higher goals (self actualization) - helping others - expressing gratitude - physical exercise

All I can ask for is something that’s fun and stick that I can take out on the roads a cruise to de-stress. I owned a vehicle like that before and after many years of just owning a daily and longing for it again, I finally purchased a vehicle I’d always sought after for a wicked price. I missed the feeling of just going out and banging through the gears, never will I let myself live without this feeling again.
Very, very true. I always make sure I buy cars for myself, not for the acceptance of others. Comments like "when are you going to modify your x" or "when are you replacing your y" really bug me. There's almost an expectation online to buy a car, throw thousands of pounds/dollars at it, then sell it and buy something else. It's easy to say just zone these people out, but it's harder to actually do that in practise.
i agree. I like Honda and i got a 99 Civic (Rover 400) as my first car as i really wanted the EK hatch but mine is very similar and i love it! One of my dream cars and i own it, feels good.

Let’s hope so otherwise people will be over it by 2030s. Something similar or more advanced and futuristic will surely replace social media that people will use by them. Either a holodeck like in Orville or Star Trek, or like in the movie Ready Player One or Wall-E. We might be living like in the Netflix show “Black Mirror” but let’s hope not.
I love your RX7. I think, it's superior to most of the builds you see on social media. It looks sleek, clean, but also powerful. Exactly like an fd should. The color pops and I'd take it over so many 1000hp RX7s, Supras, Skylines or whatever you want. It's about character, not horspower. Soul, not laptimes 💛
This is why I love the rally scene, ofc its about power and speed but its also about pushing cars and drivers to the limit, I can look at a little corolla with eyes of wonder just because it was a rally car for 3 years, but thats so cool and I would be honored to drive one, character and soul is everything, 100% agree.
Yeah. I have an RX-8 and really the way it drives is perfect to me. The long redline, the noise, the way my seat feels on... the seat. I've driven a lot of cars that would obliterate its laptime around the nearest track, and yet I would never replace mine with theirs. Not to channel too much boomer energy, but I feel like the modern horsepower wars are distracting from some of the intangible joys of driving a car. I am extremely fortunate that my career has taken me to a place where I could probably buy a turbo 911 or NSX as my next car, but the one on the top of my list right now is a simple club-spec Miata.
hypercars are engineered for speed and performance miata is engineered for enjoyment. they spent extra time making sure you would have fun while driving it -- don't take that lightly ;) (source: i own and drive a '93 miata)
I feel like between this video and one you guys put out recently about owning the FD was a real “come to Jesus” moment for you on owning the dream vehicle. Brave and necessary to put something like this out 👍🏻 FWIW - I struggle with a similar thing, the bikes and ideas I think are interesting typically never get views so I have to come up with wacky and zany things for the team to make videos on. If it were up to me, I’d make videos about ripping forest trails on crappy 250cc dual sports, but we’re all slaves to the algorithm. Oh yeah, I sent y’all to gapplebee’s with sub counts - gotta keep up 😉 jk
Yo Papa Yams! Never thought I’d see you here:) anyone else here have a bobber and a tuner car? Ive always just assumed I was alone. Like a guy who’s into cosplay or something.
Same. Got the cars I have because they interested me, and when I scroll through subreddits and such I don't see targets to exceed, I just see other peoples' neat projects.
I never did either....in my 20s (just recently...) my friends were all competitive. Everyone trying to be fastest..who's got what...fighting over the painfully few girls that hung around...as it turned out I was the one that had the deepest pockets and I chose to be thrifty because that's how I was raised and it literally is the smartest move. Didn't matter if I piped up or stayed quiet I still got bullshit from these people for not "playing the game" and living by my own set of "rules".
Proud semi-owner of my dad's 2001 Seat Leon 1M 1.4 16v. Its a beautiful blue. I love it like no other car, and in two or so years, I will hopefully be a proud owner of this deteriorating hunk of metal. You truly only need to be proud of your car.
"FD RX7 is my affordable dream car". My same exact thoughts when I bought my 93 FD, that has now been sitting in my garage for 7 years, after having sat for at least 6 years for the previous owner. I was on my way to having the car built the way I had envisioned it, especially since it was the last large personal purchase before my daughter was born... and then life decided to slam me and my fantasy... lost my job, almost lost our home, but now I'm finally back where I was financially when I was building my car. UNFORTUNATELY now there is always something else that needs the money more than the car that's sitting in the garage. Its frustrating as all hell, but damn if every time I see my FD it doesn't put a smile on my face. Then I'm reminded of all the money it's going to take to get what I want done... suspension refresh, transmission swap, new wheels, repair original paint, vinyl to my personal preferences, repairing all of the old car issues, no oil leaks... it's a hell of a project that needs a lot of cash and no one to figure it out by myself. Oh the life of a project car...
hope you get to drive your car soon bro. I'm still waiting to buy a rx8 as a first car which might be a bad idea but i love rotaryes so il try and learn as much as i can about them befor i buy one
I wish you luck and many happy miles on your build! I'm in the process of getting an engine into my RX8 that i snagged for 1000. Full interior too. Still can't believe its sitting in my garage
Well the capital gain $$ on your Fd after 7 years should at least put a smile on your face, the prices have gone crazy over the past 3 years. Really hope you can get it on the road sometime soon. I got my 2000 Fd 6 years ago, it’s completely stock, that’s enough for me, as long as I can get it out every few weeks or so
When I was younger (20's and early 30's) I used to always work hard to build my cars up...89 Celica turbo All-Trac, V8-swapped Fiero, an almost 600 HP Chevy Silverado, and a 2000 Honda Civic Coupe with a B-swap, lowered and lightened almost to the point where a Miata would be considered overweight. Honestly? It gets tiring...showing it off, seeing something new, wanting THAT. It's a cycle that will never end, and as much as I love cars, I will admit that this constant quest has put a lot of grey hairs on my head. Fast-forward to today. 4 days ago, I turned 47. I'm happily married with 5 adult children and when I just want to get away, I happily go out and hit some nice b-roads in my 2007 Honda Civic EX coupe, rowing my 5-speed manual, and just enjoying the sound of a nicely tuned exhaust bolted to a completely STOCK engine while taking my wife to a nice little outdoor café for brunch. Cars have been and most likely will always be an occasional wondrous joy of mine...but happiness? I find that in my wife, my family, my friends, in my backyard with string lights hanging from our trees and me at my barbecue grill...
Dont buy the car that will make others envy you, buy the car that you would wanna drive if the road was empty. The one that might not get you the most looks, but the one that makes you exited to drive to work in the morning.
You hit a lot on the head. I’m in my 30’s and none of my old friends are into cars anymore bc of money/family things. I’ve been lucky enough to work my ass off to own an r32 gtr and a 65 mustang. Both are amazing rides but I have no one to share it with. I’m actually storing the mustang to an area that has more shows and meets for classic cars so I can enjoy it with other like minded people. I work in the film industry and you couldn’t have been more spot on when you said “it’s lonely at the top”. Fame is absolutely short lived. So do what matters in life and enjoy the time with the people around you. Like many I must admit I got into cars bc of fast and furious. as stupid as it sounds my favorite part of the films where all the homies hanging out drinking Coronas and BBQing in the back. That’s my dream.
I completely understand where you are coming from. Cars have always been one of my top passions in life and growing up I had many friends that were into cars and tuning/building. I now have a few cars I always wanted back in highschool and I don’t have many friends that are still into it because of families, passed away, and other reasons. But for me that’s always been a top passion in life. Hell my first word as an infant was truck lol. Also whenever fast and the furious (the first one) came out I always imagined getting older and having bbqs with my buddies and their cool cars or wrenching on them too. We’re still out there and kudos to you for achieving those goals of acquiring your dream cars. I’d love to have a 65 mustang and an r32 as my first car I bought but sadly didn’t get to finish was a 66 mustang. If you ever need a friend on the east coast I’m always down to geek out over cars and peoples builds. Cheers!
@@razmuzen1090 thats true. But you could cycle it. For example live 1 month per year like poor person and then it feels awesome again and u appreciate it more
I've been caught up in the rut of boredom for the past few years. I keep being struck with the impulse to sell my cars because I just don't feel attached to them anymore. This doesn't stop with cars though; it has affected all of my hobbies and even my relationships. Life just takes a lot out of you and it doesn't like to give back. 🤷♂️
Awe cars always makes me happy =) and that's no understatement. The good can't happen without the bad, and that's basic fundamentals of a balanced life.
Cars never makes me cried no matter what I can't imagine Cars without fuel power EC is best still no heart in those cars no sound Those are not talking those cars like claude from gta 3 No voice means no live no feeling
I once knew a guy with a beat up old Toyota Trueno hatchback and he was the happiest because that car's sole purpose is to deliever tofu in the mountains.
This hit me in the feels! I'm building a project car, a VW Scirocco with a motor swap, and i constantly tell myself that I do it because i think it's cool and that i dont need the validation of other's. But when other people say it's a cool project it certainly does help. And the few times I was able to drive it before I broke stuff I was extremely happy. But you hit the nail on the head when you said it's not as fun when you don't have friends around. Covid taught me that, I get lonely working on it by myself in my garage and would love for a couple of friends to come over and just hang out while we(or even just I) work on it but given the situation of the pandemic that is not in our current reality. Final thought: I think whatever anyone does to their own car should be within the realm of what they can afford, a car project is not worth going bankrupt over. Great video, and i truly appreciate it.
The Scirocco is a good car. I drove one of these on the Nordschleife. Too bad we didn't get it over here in the U.S. but I understand why VW didn't want it cutting into the sales of their other hatches.
I’ve felt the same recently with the whole covid thing, prior there were always cars all over my drive where mates would just come round and we would spend all weekend taking them to bits, modifying stuff or making stuff now were all locked down cars feel like a huge chore, and have no interest at all to go outside on my own and do stuff I always knew cars were a way for us to get together but I didn’t realise how unimportant the cars were and it was just my friends I wanted around
@@chron151 They were here in the US. My cousin had one, and it was so rotted and that was back in the 80's. I remember the advertising, Sirocco means wind... didn't they have just one wiper blade ? I have seen them for sale on CL.
@@chron151 the Scirocco I'm working on is a 1984 gen 2! But yes. Equally disappointed we never got the gen 3 here in the US. I have family in europe and think it's a cool car.
my eclipse will always make me happy behind the wheel no matter the whp or mods. if you love a car then love it. who cares if other people love it or not. I get more compliments taking the eclipse out to places doing daily tasks than I ever thought and everything done to that car has been for me
This was beautiful. After years of wanting a Corvette, I finally bought one yesterday. I fully intended to make a RU-vid and IG for it, but I had the same realization that I bought the car for my own enjoyment and not that of other's. If building your car is not your job/primary income, it isn't worth it.
It's worth it, if you deem it worth it. How the hell is the community going to stay alive if it's just car mechanics and dealers out there :D I can't grasp just why you would link these two. It's like buying a nice house should just be left to those who build or sell them on. I don't see the correlation, buying things that make you happy isn't a bad thing imho. You've worked for it and clearly wanted it.
@@davidgalea6113 That's what I said. Turning it into a content piece wasn't the motivation for me to buy it. I wanted a fun car to enjoy. I decided to not make my "journey" with the car public because that would take away from my enjoyment of it.
@@91_C4_FL no you did not say that, I did... here is a quote from you : If building your car is not your job/primary income, it isn't worth it. I disagreed with that specific sentence and replied with: If you are building/buying your car to impress others than it is not worth it.
One of the reasons I’ve never had a “brand new” car...I’ve always had a passion for cars, but could not afford the cars I love each time. So I always end up buying it used when the time comes and I could afford it...and each time I’ve always been happy, like a kid in a candy store...because when I get in that driver seat, it’s “my car”...and I finally have it. It may not be the fastest Evo, the nicest C63, or the best RS4...but it’s my car and like you said, it puts a smile on my face.
This video just showed up in my feed. Thank you so much! The amount of effort put into this video reminds me of that exact point. If I could have my dream car, everything would wash away. That's just not true. It's a personal thing and cars shouldn't be the focal point at all. I'm inspired.
