Gauls or Celts were rumored to be involved with wicker man for example. Romans liked their gladiator fights and brutal executions. Honestly Carthage isn't much better or worse than everybody else in that times. Who knew about Geneva Convention or human rights?
@@masterexploder9668 It can be hard to tell whether these were actual practices, or whether it was just a case of Roman historians dissing their traditional enemies.
@@KageMinowara Roman propaganda certainly didn't help, but the Phoenicians(from whom the Carthaginians were ethnically/culturally descended) had the same practices. Even did them in association with the same gods(baal-hammon/moloch).
There was proof found that the Puns were really burning their children alive to sacrifice the Ba'al, as they found the ash they kept in plates or vases.
I also get ganged up by the romans. All three factions attack me when I am on the hard levels. I have a big navy and destroy the armies on the ships makes it a lot easy to defeat them.
Yeah the Roman family’s will go through very great extents to follow Senate missions, and for some reason the Julii usually get that as one of their senate missions
1) Take sicily 2) destroy Scipii 3) Conquer Numibians fast 4) Conquer Spain 5) Conquer Gaul 6) Move south-east into Rome with elephants like Hannibal did
Take Messana on the first turn and go straight for the Brutii and Capua. The Scipii are basically screwed onces they lose Messana. Long Shield and Round Shield will do against the romans.
This is cool but not practical in total war without cheats in hard or very hard mode lol! The other Romans will continue to attack you if you do not take them out. You would need ally with Gaul
Attack the scipii at both spots on the same turn (# 3). Elephants to Italy to bust down the gate upon arrival so SPQR can’t assist. Your spy in Sicily even if you don’t get in you can wait take them out. Capua matters more. Immediately send your cav units south to take out the Brutii fast with elephants busting in the gate before they can respond. Your Navy can get in their way from coming back from Greece too. With 3 Italian cities you have a base to recruit cheap cav fast to take out the Juli. Early Roman units stand no chance against 10+ cheap cav with elephants and generals hammering them all at once. With SPQR surrounded you can recruit 4 spies to ensure you get in after you draw most of them out of Rome to go after a bait Army.
@@mattphillips2844 this is good except you don’t need worry about SPQR because they suck in game. I wish they would be more aggressive even in defense of Allies but the game needs another rework done on Ally and enemy diplomacy
I am in the middle of a Carthaginian campaign right now, I took Sicily but didn't have to declare war on the greeks because the Brutii took Syracuse. Then I swept up through Italy using mostly iberian infanty and libyan spearmen. It was relatively tough because the hastati outclass all early game Carthaginian infantry. Basically you just pin down the hastati with infantry and then charge in behind with elephants, normally the morale shock is too great for the hastati and they break. The only settlement I couldn't take was rome because their army was too powerful. I'll come back for them later though when I get Poeni infantry. The numidian's declared war on me so I took Cirta and will soon take other settlements in North Africa. I allied with the Spanish so I wouldn't have to fight in two fronts. I am really happy I did that except Corduba has been kind of hard to keep public order down. Last thing is that the Gauls declared war on me for no reason. No matter how hard I try to get a ceasefire they won't accept. So I took northern italy from them, maybe now they might accept a ceasefire. Anyway, can't wait until I replace my iberian infantry armies with phalanx armies and war elephants.
You had a lot of luck i guess Because i attacked the scipii first and tried to make peace with spain and numidia I took the sicily like you but after that numidia spain and the three roman factions all declared war on me at once and i couldnt hold corduba and sicilly (The scipii managed to get wiped out because they through everything at me and rebels took over for them) It took me like 30 turns to get my economy back up now i took back sicilly and defeated numia Only that i have to deal with a massive egyptian, british and brutii empire
The historical approach is to invade Rome from the North, with Hannibal. But I think it's a better move to fast conquer Scicily, and then land on Rome in the south, and conquer the Brutis, and march north to capua, take Rome, and then take the Juli
The Carthage campaign requires some of the most creativity. Trying to ally with Spain is fine, but they're almost certain to break the alliance, so spend that time building up an army in Corduba, evacuate Iberia, and take out the Numidians. Meanwhile, constantly be sending reinforcements to Sicily - Lugotorix is right in that Greece will immediately seek a ceasefire once you take Syracuse. Rather than taking Capua, I'd target the lightly-defended Brutii settlements instead. After the Romans are defeated, no faction but Egypt will give you much trouble. Egypt is basically built to counter Carthage - it has powerful skirmishers while Carthage has none (making bridge battles difficult), and its chariots tear Carthaginian cavalry to shreds (making field battles difficult).
When I played the hard levels with Carthage I took out all the roman factions fairly easily. Your right about Egypt. Far and away my toughest fight I ever had in the game was taking Egypt out. I used the companion cavalry to take out the Egyptians. With out them I don't think I would have been able to beat the Egyptians.
Welp corduba fell in my campaign but im handling the romans at sicily bc of the mercinary hoplites which is rly op(defending)ngl and im taking out numidia which is rly easy since they use mostly javiliners
@@bluey_fan968 just kill Numidia. I made that mistake too and allied with them. When I was being invaded by Egypt they betrayed me and I was fighting a war on two fronts and lost Africa. Just kill them and take their territory. You'll get way more good and the security of knowing you won't be attacked from behind.
My issue with destroying the Roman factions to quickly is Greece become a powerhouse pumping out armies like no other. Seriously sometimes it be full stacks of armored hoplites. Absolutely annoying to destroying
Hanno is not Hannibal lol they are two different person. Hanno was from one political faction wich had his name and Hannibal was son of Hamilcar and was of the Barca faction
The only way to win with them is to bull rush with cheap cavalry lots of it. Fight outside of towns and use mercenaries to get them to charge you and tire. Then sweep in with cheap cav. Sacred band are the only units to try and slug out in a fight. Be aggressive on the campaign and only fight where you have the upper hand. You can take out all Romans in italy by turn 15 if you play it right with diversion, spies, cav overload, and elephants busting down gates and wooden walls and taking down generals.
I think Carthage should have an ability to recruit special mercenaries depending on who they ally, for instance if you ally Secluids you can recruit mercenary Syrian war elephants which should be superior to your native North African elephants
I hear a lot of RU-vidrs downplaying elephants. I always assume that none of you have really played Carthage. Armored Elephants are literally the most powerful late units in the game. They will trample absolutely everything short of phalanxes. And Rome doesn't have phalanxes. After the reforms, you can send a half stack of armored elephants, supported by normal cavalry, to roman lands, and butcher every field army. Even urban cohorts just break and die. You can break any siege, or use a few infantry as sappers, and take any settlement. Its insane. Some units have a bonus fighting elephants, but it really only applies to unarmored elephants.
I agree. When you start the game as Carthage you have the best starting army in the game in sicilaly with a boats ready to transport that army everywhere. You can completely eliminate the scippii and brutii in a few turns because you can bust down wooden walls and then move on to the next town all in one turn.
I do like your setup and how you start your introduction and how you roll onto other subjects quite well. My experiences with Carthage online is they have the 2nd best spears and highest low tier flexibility. The only problem with them is that vs Rome and Selucid they lack cav, and missile power. They however can win with good skirmishing Which is a struggle for other immobile factions.
Having elephants from the beginning, you have no need for siege weapons. So you can rush all scipii cities before they have the chance to build up. If/when SPQR counterattacks, you can sell everything and bring the Scipii to stone age. Your cavarly is strong, so build lots of it. Thats my Carthaginian strategy
It's been interesting finding your channel and working my way back through the catalog. There's a big difference in your comfort level and transitions. Awesome stuff.
Just completed campaign with Carthage (50 regions) but still going to keep playing I have unfishined business with macedon. It's been the most fun campaign I've ever done I think. Had a great economy and and the advanced units are awesome. I am an expert at the game now so that could be why but it was fun and I kicked ass lol
The julii almost always go for Caralis if you play as Carthage, and it is really annoying because I try to focus my armies on Sicily and begin making plans to land Italy and take out the Scipii and then the Julii show up out of nowhere and rape Caralis
Finished a game with Carthage in 92 BC, by far the best campaign in my opinion. Poeni infantry outclasses all premarian roman infantry and after ~20 turns you can start training sacred band and invading mainlaind Italy.
I usually conquer Sicily at first; I charge at Messana with elephants while the Romans are preoccupied with the siege of Syracuse. It takes two or three turns at most. Then I transfer the Sicilian army to Spain and conquer the peninsula, while I keep the Romans at check by sinking their ships. Once you have Spain - and you can also conquer East-Northern Africa in the meanwhile -, you have a solid basis for greater conquests.
I need help... I’m with Carthage, I have all units available and I waged war with Spain and Roman factions since the start.... I was able to destroy Spain all but one city which I spare on purpose because I want them to become my vassals LoL. Anyways, because of my wars with Spain and Numidia and Rome I completely disregarded the East.... I come to find out that Phontus has become massive.... and I mean it... they defeated Scythia, Armenia and even Egypt... Egypt only survived because they have two cities on a island.... Ponthus conquered the entire East of the map and they came after me and they are kicking my ass. I faced them with phalanx and they inflict massive losses by using their missile units, I hate their archers and their misile chariots... I tried to use my cavalry to chase the chariots but they just go away and my troops can’t catch up when I then realize my horses are now far from my troops and is a massacre.... what’s the best tactic to defeat Ponthus by using Carthage? I am honestly thinking in send three big armies on boats to bypass the massive armies they have on land, make landing on Alexandria, take it along some other cities and give them for free to Egypt to create some sort of buffer zone between me and Ponthus or give them to the romans and let them join the fight. Any ideas? I don’t thing I can keep doing a war of attrition, they have full armies everywhere. They even destroyed Macedonia and Greece... they are all over the Eastern map.
Fernando Rodriguez Wow that's an unusual situation to be in, Pontus doesn't usually get that big and Egypt can normally defeat them. I'd definitely do what you suggested and bypass the big armies. Try and take big cities (with high level walls) that are poorly garrisoned. This will force the Pontic armies to travel back to reclaim them, but now you have the advantage of walls. The problem is that late-game Pontic armies are superior to Carthaginian ones because they have better Phalanx. Make sure to upgrade your armour as much as possible to give you an advantage in battle, and to combat the Pontic missiles. It seems like you're in a difficult situation because Pontus has become very big, but if you hurt their economy by taking settlements then they should start to suffer. Good luck!
i face the same problem. rather than face them on the dessert which their bronze shield pikemen has bonus.. rather than go for alexandria, i attack anatolia.. now i has access to cretan archer and better defence with wall.. the has less garrison there.. good luck mate
Use armoured elephants to break up the phalanx and soak up missile fire while you send poeni infantry to follow during the chaos, its best you hold your cavalry in reserve if they have more chariots and cav than you. So you can wait it out and counter charge if they attack your flanks. And you can use slingers to counter archers(they have the same range) and get other mercenaries to complementyour missile troops. Ive experienced a similar situation and they usually use alot of eastern infantry with some phalanxes, so causing a rout would be the best way to win.
yeah i send a family member round the map collecting as many different mercenaries as possible (hoplites, cretan archers, chariots, spanish mercenaries, golden bands, numidian missile cav etc etc etc so that I have basically very troop type available to me. PS also use elephants to their maximum potential, those elephants are your secret weapon. personally defeated the romans by engaging hastati w/iberian infantry and then bringing missile cav round the back (1 unit 150 kills) and then using the 1 unit of elephants you get at the start to rout them when the hastati get down to aorund 40 men/unit. (at this point you have to be quick or your iberian infantry will break as they will probably still have taken heavy casualties from the hastati.)
Just make slingers. Army composition half slingers and half cavalry. Order your slingers to advance and fire on their fron line pike and infrantry, put skirmish mode on, and you can forget about them. Order your cavalry go half circle around their infantry line, and go engage their cavalry and range troops. Slingers counter even the heavist infantry not by killing them, but by making them chase around, wasting time untill your cavalry kill everything else, and now their infantries are no longer together in one big group but split up all over the map. So just charge from behind or shoot from behind. Oh, slingers when shooting from behind are like machine guns!
As Carthage I build a massive fleet at the first turns and just sink the romans into oblivion because they will always try to invade you , so until you are ready to invade them just sink them non stop
Every time I play as Carthage I "sell" everything even the capital, apart from the town in Spain and I focus there, Spain has a lot of mines and it can be easily developed with a capital in the center with good public order due to smaller distances then I can attack Italy. If I keep the city of Carthage it ends up with a huge minus in income and terrible public order due to big distances....
I destory the scipii and numedians and have 2 times trying to destroy romam spqr faction to cause chaos with the other roman factions. Im not sure if im just wasting energy and money on them and ibstead focus on the Spaniards.
Good videos, bit you need to brush up on your knowledge with the factions.....there were a few mistakes with the scipii video, such as missing out units and wrong information.....also, only the romans get the marian reforms, carthage gets the upgraded general once they've upgraded to a huge city
Ive done the whole map with carthage on very hard, extemely time consuming because I had to fight most battles rather than resolve even with very experienced soldier resolving them automatically would cause me alot of losses
Great video. I think you undersold the Chosen Spearmen though. They’re not just good. They are fantastic and cheap compared to, say, Spartan hoplites which can only be recruited in certain cities. I’ve taken on the Romans with Chosen spears and cavalry. And don’t knock the slingers either. They have short range but they can do the job.
I made a video on this a while back: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-9e0ZEh3fP-0.html. Make sure you leave at least one faction in the unplayable section though
Pensants are trash yes but the Karthago ones are acrually one of the best. They have 3/3. Babarian have 1/4 and Romans have 1/1. And town militia are the same as the Roman town guards
Carthage is super weak. Both Hannibal and my elephants died in first battle. Found germania (finished yesterday) much stronger. Though we reduced scipio and Spain (another super weak faction) down to their last cities, they managed to hold out for really long time. Actually I think scipio (capua) night have fallen if the senate didn’t come to their aid. Nice thing about short campaigns is u don’t have to deal with those endless riots. I remember managing quite diligently but ppl rebel anyway when u reach 45 cities.
Wanted to play Carthage....and then I noticed they don't have Archers, that's a big turn off for me. Any faction that doesn't have archers is a big BOOO!! from me.
Lugotorix There's something off about Carthage not having archers. When you look at Carthage's neighbor, Numidia, you'll see their unit roster HAS archers, and the model might also be the the same if Carthage ever got any archers. Why didn't CA add archers for Carthage?
