Cartilage Regeneration | Frank's Story

Frank had a a torn ACL and a meniscus tear in his knee. The first doctor he saw told him he needed a knee replacement, and would eventually need to stop his very active lifestyle. Frank wasn't ready for that. Instead, he came to Penn Sports Medicine for a second opinion. He met James Carey, MD, who told him about a procedure called autologous chondrocyte implantation (ACI).
In ACI, a tiny piece of cartilage was taken from Frank's knee and sent to a lab in which it grew millions of cells. Once it was ready, Dr. Carey repaired Frank's ACL tear, and re-implanted his knee cartilage. Today, Frank is back to his healthy lifestyle working out at his CrossFit gym and running.

make beef/ lamb bone broth in the slow cooker. all the cartilage/tendons/ligaments etc dissolves off the sides of the bones into the liquid then have a couple of cups a day. store in fridge and reheat on hotplate. cartilage does heal itself.

I've heard of this but didn't bother to make some. So just buy bones or whole part and save the bones to make broth? Need to add anything else beside water?
@Sam-fp8zm
@Sam-fp8zm 3 года назад
@@Ms-zg2nn i buy marrow bones, scoop the marrow out, eat some raw, freeze the rest, and then either eat some raw each day or short fry time on the pan. with the left over bones i make broth from them which extracts any left over bone marrow (which tastes great) and also all the stuff on the side like commented above. i only use water. can add a little salt if desired. besides marrow bones there are just soup / broth bones or beef bones butchers sell which is usually neck or ribs and has cartilage etc on the side too. only downside of those types vs marrow bones is the marrow bones broth tastes better because it has some marrow left in it. the end part of the marrow bones has lots of the joint tissue stuck on it so that is great for the broth. there is a facebook group on bone broth (bone broth sippers) and PKD - The Paleolithic Ketogenic Diet is another good group.

I had an excision of a bipartite patella fragment four years ago at 20 years old because of chronic pain associated with the loosening of the fragment. This is a pretty rare knee problem and the three or four recommendations I got from doctors was to operate on it. This is after trying years of physical therapy, neuromuscular therapy, acupuncture, and myofacial release from differing places and people. In my case it wasn't a huge piece and the surgical consensus seemed to be that removing it would provide the best long term outcome. Unfortunately it only made my knee pain worse and limited my functioning even more. I believe that this may be because the fragment extended slightly into the articular cartilage of the knee. I have close to 100% functionality in the knee but when I try to exercise it in any capacity it causes intense lasting pain. I'm not a doctor but my though would be that in order to restore long term functionality and stability and functionality I would be 1. possibly repair any damaged cartilage and 2. find a way to have the knee function without out further damage to the cartilage on the anterior femoral condyle (where the exacerbation is located). Anybody have any thought on this?

Hello doc. I was diagnosed with moderate patellar tendonitis and chronic full-thickness chondral loss of the medial patellar facet in my left knee. I'm a basketball player and the doctor said that it could be a career ending injury since cartilage do not heal. I didn't have the chance to ask the doctor all the questions I wanted to ask because he was in a hurry to leave. Since MRI isn't always accurate, I want to have a second opinion in terms of getting another MRI to ensure that I really i have a full-thickness chondral loss before I call it a career ending for. I'm hoping that I only have moderate patella tendonitis and the full-thickness chondral is wrong. What do you recommend? Or do you have any advice for me? Thanks

Anthoney monemou why not look into something called Undenatured collagen type two? It has been known to rebuild cartilage, as when you consume it, the antibodies in your system, which have been attacking the cartilage ( which consists mainly of collagen ) , sense there is cartilage in your stomach, travel there to destroy it, and thus allow the cartilage in the knee or wherever a chance to recover. Might be smthg to think about. Something else which may help is Great Lakes Gelatin ( essentially collagen type 2) the green packet, available on Amazon. I have had a tear in all 3 parts of my right hamstring for two years, and have been taking both, have gone down from 12 or so painkillers a day to just one, in the last few weeks of taking it. One more thing - home made chicken broth / soup. No, seriously. It is RAMMED FULL of collagen. Collagen is the building block of everything in your body. Whatever you choose to do, good luck with it.

@Roman Kover the MACI implant was successful, unfortunately for me I ripped up a different section a year or 2 later that I had removed, but my surgeon said the original MACI spot looked perfect. In the rehab process and getting back into physical action after MACI, i noticed a small hitch feel when trying to do uphill climbs on the bike or run up the stairs, I felt things weren’t completely smooth and I ignored that and I think when I was really trying to uphill climb on the bike I ripped some cartilage off on the non MACI section which i later had removed. Feel good now and getting by even though i have a new pothole. Just something to look out for. You need to rehab it the proper way, adhere to the non weight bearing periods, which i did, but i might of had some cartilage spill over in the setting period and create some issues for other parts of that knee

@newyorkguy158
@newyorkguy158 3 года назад
there is an alternative to hip replacement that few people know about. It's called hip resurfacing. Surgeon shaves away the cartilage debris in the hip, puts a metal cap on it and a metal part in the joint to receive the bone with the metal cap. Cemented together. Bond is so strong, you could jump out of a plane with it. Like a new hip, but without removing your hip. You still have you hip and it's amazingly strong. I had it done in 2018, when I could hardly walk from OA. In 11 months, I was playing basketball again and I'm not even young! No problems with the hip at all. The hip is strong immediately after surgery, though it's recommended to use crutches for 1 week, then 1 crutch for 2 weeks. Immediately after being released from the hospital I walked to the supermarket and back, 1/4th mile or a little more. Surgeon who did operation is best in the world at this procedure, Dr. Su at the Hospital for Special Surgery in NYC. I wouldn't trust anyone else to do it. I paid for it, but you might have insurance that would pay for it.

@carlacaires4679
@carlacaires4679 3 года назад
@@BenatarTribute, and from what I've read, stem cells are cells which when transfered to another part of the body are able to differentiate into cells of that other part of the body. So, yes, it's possible to regenerate cartilage through stem cell therapy. (But it is said to be a very expensive procedure, which probably most people can't afford.)
