Many people have suggested this and I thought it was a great idea, so I’m reviewing and ranking every Cartoon Network era from worst to best! The rankings will be based on how good the overall branding, bumpers, and identity is, the scheduling, shows that premiered or were currently running, and a slight hint of nostalgia. Cartoon Network has had some amazing eras, godawful ones, and a good chunk of them that were just okay.
Pastel is the channel’s current branding and it’s very middle of the road with a mixture of good and shoddy qualities. Let’s give a more nuanced look at all of Cartoon Network’s eras and brandings with a modern approach! Which ones have stood the test of time and which ones were hot garbage? When it comes to branding and bumpers, City era wins.... but when it comes the programming and scheduling (which matters most imo) Powerhouse era wins... otherwise, your list is totally spot on. Great video and left a like!

Controversial ranking Powerhouse over CN City! Can't say I agree. CN City was cool but when we moved from Cartoon Cartoon Fridays to just Fridays, things started to go down hill.

I liked the Powerhouse era the most, especially when Cartoon Network was under its best management. CN City? Close, but not quite. Though it had better bumpers, the management of Cartoon Network wasn't as good as I thought it would be, but was good enough.

They did air new and original programming during the checkered era. Batman the Animated Series, The Moxy Show, Captain Planet, Space Ghost Coast to Coast, The Addams Family (1992 version), The Brak Show and Cartoon Planet. In 1995, they came out with "What a Cartoon", which serves as pilots for most of the Cartoon Cartoons shows starting in 1996 with Dexter's Laboratory, Powerpuff Girls and Ed, Edd n' Eddy. In 1997 came Courage the Cowardly Dog, Cow & Chicken, I Am Weasel and Johnny Bravo. So you see. They were really good at mixing in new, originals and classics, giving the channel a lot of variety.

I know they began original programming later on during the Checkerboard Era, however they were just starting out and there really wasn't that much of it yet. Also I'm on the fence whether or not Captain Planet, 2 Stupid Dogs, or SWAT Kats count as CN originals or not

@@ArtieRaccoonReviews Yea. I don't know. were Turner production though. They started on TBS in America and TNT overseas, and continued over on Cartoon Network from 1992. Technically, Cartoon Planet, Space Ghost C2C and The Moxy Show were their first original productions. Btw, you forgot about Droopy, Master Detective. But because they moved over to CN, I'd argue that they're half originals. But either way. CN had plenty of new programming at launch. And I'd argue that the huge variety mix of new and old classics at the time is what makes the checkered era people's favorite. Especially those that grew up in the beginning of CN.

To me the Powerhouse Era is the best. Great bumpers, character interactions, memorable announcers. It's weird how fans forget that characters would interact before the City era. I didn't need the characters to be clustered together in this one city, a city that wasn't even as fun as the worlds in which the toons come from.

Fun fact: In the Philippines, the CN City era also had locally-exclusive bumpers for The Simpsons, which aired over there on Cartoon Network. Kinda weird, but actually true and somewhat logical since a lot of Fox animated shows aired on CN’s Adult Swim block, yet Simpsons aired on normal CN instead of AS in the Philippines.

I'm aware of that, and I thought it was pretty cool. Also I think The Simpsons fits Cartoon Network better than Adult Swim since it's a more tame adult animated show and the earlier seasons (before season 20) are family friendly.

If I'm being honest, if Cartoon Network City era were to come back, I wish Mao Mao, Adventure Time, Regular Show, Gumball, and even OK KO all appears in the CN City era, I would love it if Mao Mao were to end up interacting with Courage the Cowardly Dog or The Powerpuff Girls.

I just got an idea from a redditor on how to save Cartoon Network. They could always copy Adult Swim’s strategy of streaming on their website. Just like old times, they could keep a solid schedule of their current shows with weekly premieres. Without even showing Cartoonito or Adult Swim or commercials. And if this were a simulcast with cable, they could replace the commercials with newly made bumpers. Preferably a new version of Powerhouse or City or even Noods bumpers. Which begs the question: how much sooner can the family friendly cable channels like Cartoon Network can be added to Pluto TV? I know it’s owned by Paramount hence their Nickelodeon channels, but they’ve partnered with other studios to add content and the new leadership said they’re looking for money where they can find it. Kids aren’t watching cable anymore but just because cable is dying doesn’t mean the brands started by those channels should die with them.

Pastel: They only air Regular Show from 3:00 pm to 4:00 pm. This will show old cartoons weekdays until 6 pm but if its a weekend 4 pm will be straight up adult swim.

As an international viewer, my favorite eras are City, RYW and two Europe-only eras: Casillas and Arrow. Check It 1.0 was alright, it was my last childhood era.

Say what you will about the check it era. They actually still did air reruns of they're older shows back then and they had a ton of really great shows like Adventure time, Regular show, gumball, mad, and steven universe back then. They're schedule back then wasn't that bad until late 2014-2021 and they still had a decent schedule during that era.

I think it well correlates with my European experience, maybe just ignoring how much some branding were skipped. Also we had some unique stuff like block bumpers after 2002 to 2005 or 06 (country depending). Most striking thing for me is how much better line-up is currently in us. European schedule is still pretty mediocre. Not a lot of cartoons, still awful graphic era and full night Gumball episodes from 9.20 pm to 6 am. I would love to have any optimism as in usa CN

@@ArtieRaccoonReviews Yeah, we have a lot of struggles. Also worth mentioning that in 2023 in Poland we lost Boomerang as it was fully switched into cartoonito. Despite that it was expected, as boomerang in Poland last time showe some classics around 2018. For whathever reason we didn't have anything classic, unless someone use netflix or amazon prime, as they have few classic CN cartoons. Also worth mentioning is that we had around 2022 on Warner TV morning schedule with some CN classics at weekends, but now it's random Dexter or Courage episodes around 6 am.

Also because there are 16 Cartoon Network eras, try putting the eras in groups of 4 and do it by the 4 times tables and have the CN eras in 4 choices (4, 8, 12, 16) (4 groups). How about that?

Honestly, as a young adult I cringe at those Cartoon Network bumpers, (even though others who are same age as me or older, like them), But I say that the "City Era" is has the best Cartoon Network bumpers so far. (My unpopular opinions.) Besides, nowadays the audience want to select their OWN watch schedules of TV shows they want to watch instead of watching predetermined ones! But sadly there are those CRINGY content farm videos that committed copyright infringement (which the history repeated itself since "Spiderman and Elsa" content farm)

i really thought the dimensinal era was the worst when i came back to it in 2023 and...i hate myself for watching cartoon network like that... I DIDN'T EVEN KNOW THAT ERA WAS AWFUL UNTIL I REALIZED TTG...is ttg still hated btw? luckly i first watched cartoon network in 2012 when i was 5...thank goodness

I have the hot take of liking Dimensional branding, I would say it’s better than a few other eras in terms of branding. The schedule, however, does bring down the era massively, as it’s just TTG spam from 2017 up until Redraw Your World effectively.

Number blocks replaced Thomas and Friends all engines go on December 18, 2023 and colour blocks replace Cocomelon on the 19th of February 2024 of course no promos were for the shows were used this is just a pretend schedule

We got scooby doo, Tom and Jerry, the looney tunes show, regular show, adventure time, Steven universe (sometimes) and tiny toons loonivserity (oh man after commenting this I realised how much CN improved) so still saying teen titans go is spamming is just old but I disagree with you saying the different colours make it look like a pre school channel and it being lazy, it looks pretty cool and the music is relaxing and though it doesn’t fully 100% fits Cartoon Network it still works unlike redraw your world which is well RAINBOW.

I honestly think the Noods era is underrated. I love the concept of humanoid creatures adopting a color or cartoon character just by touching said color. If Cartoon Network hadn't given up on cartoons during this era, this bumper era would've lasted longer. These are the shows that should've gotten their own Noods or Toonix bumpers Adventure Time Generator Rex Stoked Secret Mountain Fort Awesome Robotomy Uncle Grandpa Steven Universe Dragons Riders of Berk Ninjago
