Carving A Boomerang From Brazilian Ipe

Check out this boomerang I carved using Ipe. Ipe is a tropical wood from Brazil that is very dense and resilient to decay. This was my first attempt at making a boomerang and it didn't work as well as I'd like. Here are a few thoughts on what I think could be improved.
1. Ipe is probably too heavy of a wood, the boomerang weighs in at 4 ounces and should probably be more like 3 ounces. The extra weight is probably effecting how it flies.
2. There's an issue with wood movement because I made the boomerang from a solid piece of wood. It's likely to bow with humidity changes, which will effect how well it flies.

Andy Rawls you don't need to make any changes to the boomerang, you just need to throw it out a bit wider, basically face one way then turn 90 degrees right and throw it , hope this works for you.

I tried learning to throw a return boomerang several years ago. Threw the thing about 5000 times, went and fetched it about 4999 times. I'm still waiting for that last throw to return on its own.

KarlBunker they're a gimmick. And for those who say, you get what you pay for, not in this case. The expensive boomerangs are just made with different wood and cut more precise. but the overall effect if the same. YOUR throw is what really matters with getting it to cut the air to turn slightly.

Returning boomerangs were used to scare birds , like ducks , into nets that were slung across creeks or other waterways. Other non returning boomerangs that were much heavier and larger were used to hunt larger game like kangaroos or in warfare between different tribes .A returning boomerang is no gimmick ,if thrown correctly it will return to the thrower and s/he can catch it and throw again. the guy in the video is throwing it the wrong way around and at the wrong angle

It's all in the snap of the wrist. Using your full arm but keeping your wrist tight causes it to shoot flat and then straight up in a L shape. Make sure you got one of the toe ends filed down more so into a sharpish edge and have the other one thicker. This plays into what makes them fly really good: Bernoulli's Air Principle. The three armed boomerangs are the easiest to learn on in my opinion. Hope this helps! It gets really addicting when you get the hang of it!

there's a guy I see about once a year who sells boomerangs. I've seen him do it expertly, and when I've thrown them I can at least get them to come back my way. The way he throws them is kindof like an overhand throw, kinda like you were throwing an axe, but turned at a diagonal maybe 45 degrees or so, basically playing with the angle helps determine how fast it will return. also he throws them with the pointy edge outward (also kinda like an axe), not sure if that makes a difference or not. Good luck, the boomerang looks great :)

Hi Andy it looks good but you made something that looks like a boomerang but that's it. There are in fact many shapes and uses some are designed to come back some are just to knock birds from flight and provide food they have a little more weight like yours. Come to Australia sometime for a holiday and meet the cleaver old fellas who carve them by hand with sharp rocks I bet you would love it. Man you sure have a nice work shop kind regards Mike.

Hey Andy, First off I’m a fan of your videos. They definitely have the Hill Country vibe. I found you on RU-vid awhile back and only noticed we lived in the same town by a Cibolo Creek brewery sticker on a piece of your equipment! Do you recommend any local mills or lumber yards for quality wood? Besides the back yard full of live oak stumps of course. Also, would love to see you create something out of our pesty cedar. Or ashe juniper rather. Anyway, keep up the good work. Maybe I’ll see you around town! -Christian

Hey Andy... love your Chanel. I’m a ‘chippy’ (carpenter) from Australia, also hold a commercial pilots licence and love and understand the aeronautics behind the boomerang. Played with them lots as a kid, but have never had a crack at carving one, so well done. Just a heads up about your throwing style. You are supposed to throw them the other way round. Concave away. Flat side against your palm and upright or perpendicular to the ground. Similar action to throwing a hatchet Which I have seen you are very talented at. Might give you a better result. Well done though, Looks well balanced and beautifully made. The grains in that timber are gorgeous. God bless... keep the videos coming.

Hey Andy, look up a RU-vid of some pros throwing boomerangs, if memory serves me as has been commented here: 1) throw the boomerang with the turn of the boomerang “into” the throw 2) don’t throw it flat, I believe at an angle just off vertical (and the arc of throw flattens out as it swings round) Needs verifying but these two points were big aha moments memory still works.

I’ll give you a quick run down on how to throw. 1. Establish where the wind is and the direction it’s blowing from. 2. Face body directly into wind 3. Imagine a 12 hand clock, picture the 12 directly in front of you. 4. Now picture the 1-2 o’clock hands. 5. Throw overhand but not to hard, just firm into the 1-2 o’clock hand area. 6. Slowly start finding the sweet spot and soon enough it should/may come back to you. p.s. don’t throw under arm that’s for duck hunting and there will be no chance of that boomerang coming back

When throwing a boomerang you should throw it at a 45° angle up from the ground and it should be perpendicular to the ground, once you correct your angles, it will level out and then start the return and dissent.

I’m pretty sure you throw it ‘open side’ first. Had one as a kid. Could purely depend on how it was originally shaped.
