How do you make a hanger for these? I have carved about eight of these so far. Not all are finished yet, but they will be. I have oiled a couple and painted a couple. Grandkids call the oiled ones ginger bread cookies. My wife wants me to carve and paint a snow scene and place one in that with some carved carolers. I hope to take you class at MASW next year.

Thank you very much! Is it possible for you to attach a pattern for the tree?

How is the tree attached to the piece of wood?

I have never carved mahogany, is there any thing that one should watch out for when carving mahogany? What is the best type of mahogany to buy? Thanks, Tim....

Can't help you on the best type to buy, as it will vary based on the project, but I use almost exclusively mahogany for relief carving. I am in Micronesia, and that is the local wood of choice for carving. The characteristics I find most troublesome, it is hard and dulls your chisels fast; the grain can be tricky and changes within the piece; too young of a tree and it is only good for firewood. Hope this helps.

Thanks Evan, so the mahogany you use is tropical growth timber, I live in southern Colorado, where it is dry most of the time. Pine is what I can get by the ton, but it changes from tree to tree for carving. It too, can be hard on tools. I like to learn how different woods carve, It fun to try something different.

Another awesome video! Why is it after watching a dozen or so of these RU-vid videos of these famous woodworkers, we feel like they’re our personal friends? My imaginary conversation in Walmart: Don: Hi Mary. Mary: Hi Don. D: Whatcha working on in your shop? M: I’m carving oak dresser door panels for the governor’s mansion. And You? D: Sawing some dried chestnut limbs in to 2” lathe stock for Christmas ornaments. Need any? You know how beautiful lathed chestnut is. M: Not now, but I never turn down an offer for wood that I don’t currently have. Bring a few pieces over and we see about making a trade. I just received a shipment of mahogany and I have a lot of basswood. D: OK, see you in a few days. M: Remember to keep your wits sharp and your tools sharper. D: Yes Ma’am. :)
