@robsandstrom9854
@robsandstrom9854 4 года назад
Thank you for sharing process. i want to give this a try - it turned out very nice. Hard to get a sense of how deep the carving is and how much sanding can actually be done without messing up the effect of the paint. I like the idea of the drum sander - but as you sad would be afraid of destroying what was so well created to start with. Have you gotten any more experience since producing the video? Any additional hints on the sanding process? Any idea, how would this picture turn out on a 12x13 piece of maple or other hardwood? One again well done.

When sanding, are you trying to eliminate all the lines or just knock off the rough edges?
@BeaulieuTodd
@BeaulieuTodd Год назад
The first sanding is to remove all the curly bits from the carve. The second sanding is to remove the paint from the surface, taking care not to sand down into the carved areas.

after cutting it, you should have put on another seal coat before painting. This would have sealed the cut areas which would also keep the paint from bleeding since those fibers were opened up by the bit during cutting. :)

normally for a 30 deg V bit use a 0.2 or 0.3 mm depth with steps of 0.3 mm or 3 lines per mm. All depends how much resolution you want to achieve. I use "dmap2gcode" to get the Gcode. It is free and simple to use. Vectric also has that feature but never tried.

How do you control how deep the v bit goes in?
@jamestottle3199
@jamestottle3199 2 года назад
It's quite tricky. The max depth of the v bit can be set but overall this depends on a few things.. the degree and size of your bit but also the line spacing. If you set the line spacing to sparse the bit can go deeper. So basically it's a play off between detail and depth. More detail less depth.. less detail more depth. Hope this helps

Really? What depth of cut would you use? What spindle speed would you use? What feed rate would you use? Would you use a 2, 3 or 4 flute bit? Would it be better to use HSS or Carbide bit? Would you have chosen soft maple? would you have used oil based paint? Would you have sealed the soft maple prior to cutting? Those decisions are made based on SKILL and knowledge of both materials and CNC machining. I will admit that there were no precise dovetails cut using a Japanese saw, but his skill happens to be in a different craft.
