i also got into carving jade and was self taught, i started with buying a bag of slabs with no intention of carving them a few years back, and then gradually started trying new things, I think personally what I use is small dremil sandpaper discs of 180, 220, 240, and then there are those fabric buffing wheels also same dremil size attachments with green buffing compound. I find it that buffing does a good job of getting into places that you cant really cover with sandpaper. then i use sandpaper of 1000 2000 3000 with my hands (it's probably better to buff after sanding)

keep up the good work! when I was starting off in lapidary I was able to buy some greenstone pounamu. like all stone there is a work of art in each piece and you should find it before carving anything. luckily the stone will let you know.

I used the same technique to oil shells I picked up from the beach. However, once it meet water the oil come out. If I oil a rock and wearing it to swim, will the oil come out as well?

Thank you for sharing your jade carving knowledge. I'm a stone carver myself, I work with soapstone. I always interested in carving newzeland Punamu, is it possible to get raw (rough green stone) from Newzeland? Thank you. Naga

On trademe there is a seller called Testntools (also they sell direct from their company) who stock a lot of tools relevant to pounamu carving. The desic brand of diamond burs they sell are totally decent and not too expensive. There is also a lot of stuff on Aliexpress if you don't mind waiting ages for it to arrive. I got all my diamond sponges and cloth from there as it is heaps cheaper than places like jadecarver.com.
