Thank you so much, I'm so grateful for your video. My daughter felt so uncomfortable without her Hei toki after it unravelled. We went to some carvers to have it rebound and they said they couldn't do it. Thanks to you I could do it, and she is so relieved. 💚
I have been searching google for over an hour now how to wrap a ponamu and couldn’t find anything until I stumbled (only by accident) your video! Thanks so much!!
Thank you for your tutorial the lashing on my pounamu stone that I got from a New Zealand exchange student had recently come undone ...and with this I was able to fix and wear it again 💕
Thank you for your tutorial, my sons toki needed a new binding, I live on the GC and during quarantine, I thought I would have a go at repairing his much beloved toki. I’m so happy I was able to repair it and he is able to wear it.
I did a bone carving course this weekend and made a toki for my daughter, I wanted to lash it properly so watched your video and now have something I am completely proud of. Thank you for sharing this tutorial so clearly. I have really enjoyed it!
Thanks from this, I spent 6 months in your beautiful country 4 years ago and I’ve been wearing my toki ever since. Would not have been able to fix it if not for your video! Hope you’re all safe and well there. Love from Singapore
Thank you for your video ...I got a necklace like this from my NZ exchange student when she came to Canada and that was 4 years ago and I have worn it so much that the binding is starting to fall apart ...time to do another one 😊
Great work-thanks for sharing. Learning to make this type of wrap is a game changer for me. Now I can make the necklaces with no metal parts. I like how tight the lashing becomes. Wrapped seven pendents, and my car key today!
thank you so much! I am a macrame artist and my brother in law asked me to repair his Pounamu, your video had me get it first go, he is going to be very happy to wear it again :)
Thank you for this video! I am from Australia and one of my dear friends from NZ had given me a Toki a year ago. The cord had started to come apart and I was just make shift fixing it. 2 days ago the binding was coming undone. being that the necklace means alot to me, I felt wrong not wearing it. Now I'm off to buy some more waxed cord and hopefully through your guidance, I can make it whole again. much love, stay safe, Lisa xx
Thank you so much for your tutorials. I just managed to lash & bind my sons Toki. The binding cord had broken from wear & tear over the years. Im so happy that I could fix it for him. Thank you xo
Thanks so much for your videos!! The binding and braid on my husband's toki was so worn out after years of wearing it that it finally ripped. I even thought of sending the whole thing to a friend in NZ to get it fixed. But with your awesome explanations I managed to do it myself. Didn't turn out too bad, I think. Thanks!
Excellent video, still very challenging, I had to restart a few times, seem to get it perfect but it wasn't tight, so redid until I was happy, thank you though, now my son can wear his hei toki again.
Campbell, great video ! The closeups really give a clear understanding of how the wrappings work. Just wondering if you might do a video on how to do the neck cord with a pounamu cross bar and loop ?
Hi, just wondering how long should you make the the cords that forms the necklace itself? They look to be 1/2 meter lengths? Any help appreciated. Cheers
Thank you for this great easy to follow video. I managed to re-bind my toki that came loose after a year of wearing it. My work looks fine but as I wear the toki all the time, the binding comes loose very quickly (much quicker than the original binding did). I’m obviously doing something wrong. How can I prevent the last round of cord going up from popping out of place on top of the previous turns/rounds ? Any tip ?.. am I binding too tight ? Or too loose ?
Hello! This is an incredibly informative video! I was looking through the comments but I couldn't find anything regarding the length of thread used for this lashing, could you provide some details on that please? Thank you!
My granddaughter yanked on mine and the cord snapped. My toki pounamu had been sitting in my drawer for a long time. Would look at it every day and sigh, coz i wasnt wearing it. I went to spotlight and they didnt have the cord you mentioned. Found it on EBay and reasonably priced. Because of this awesome vid, I was able to follow you step by step in restringing (is that what its called?) Thank you soooo much,. Nga mihi aroha ki a koe mo aau puukena ki te awhi taangata. Mauri Ora!!
Thank you so very much. Looking forward to practising this. Participated in one of Maha Tomo’s workshops and just love the wrapping. Looking forward to using it again. Thanks for such great lessons. Sharing the knowledge is really appreciated. Bev.J
I'm having great difficulty pulling the pull cord through when I have finished lashing. Do you have any suggestions as my husband is unable to get it through also. Otherwise I'm really happy with the results on following your instructions. Thank you Campbell
I could make a video but it would be pretty simple if you wanna give it ago. Just get wet and dry sand paper, and keeping it damp by dipping it in water sand the chip out with 120 grit. Use a piece of rubber or foam to save you fingers getting sore. Then when it is smooth, sand it with finer grits to get it matte polished, 280 grit, 400 grit, 800 grit, 1200 grit. The only question is whether you can polish to so that it matches the rest of the pounamu, as this will give a nice matte finish but to get is shiner or like glass you need special tools and polishing products. If this is not super clear then I will make a video for ya.
Thank you so much for this really clear tutorial..... my sons Toki had come undone and I couldn’t find anyone to do it, worked PERFECTLY first time!!! Really appreciate this!!
@@CampbellCarving Groovy ! Will give that a go. Working on my first Hei Toki, albeit in hard black onyx to learn on. It has the same hardness as Jade and is a lovely rich black. Will give it a nice satin finish rather than high polish 🙂
Kia Ora Campbell, Where do you get your cord from? I’ve followed your tutorial with some black thin cord that I cover with beeswax. But eventually the beeswax does wear away and the natural cord wears thin.
@@kapenamokiao6384 I have a couple of contacts on the west coast of NZ that I get most of mine from. There are some good pieces that come up on trademe sometimes, not sure if you can get that in Hawaii though.
Is there any other cord to use besides wax cord. Does it work with non waxed cord? If so, what's the reason for using waxed cord? Thank you. Love the videos
@@CampbellCarving ok thank you. Someone said the wax cord felt like it was weird. Does it feel more natural over time. Meaning, does the wax wear off over time and feel softer at all. ?
How long should your string be? Got all the way through then found at the very end my string was way to short. Arms length? Hand length? 2meters, 1meter? …
Will vary for the size of the toki, I sometimes do a quick lash to get the length I need. Or check out how I have done a more recent video, there is a different way to do the pull through that would help too.
Watch my update on toki lashing for a technique which means you dont need to measure the length, the amount wraps does not matter - ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-G2EYiiF_cYg.html
Thanks so much for the video, I got mine 4 years ago and I think the rope will break in a few years, no I know how to put a new one, I am from Spain so it’s pretty difficult for me to get back there and ask someone to doit hahaha.
To much bro a friends Pounamu cording came undone and her son wouldn't wear it till it was fixed lol. Lets just say after watching this hes wearing now Kia ora :)
