We begin the process of rebuilding our collapsed root cellar wall by placing the first few rows of earthbags. Then Jim hand carves a staircase into the earth which will provide access to the new cellar.

Thanks for watching! What do you think of the carved staircase?
@madmex2k

I can't critique your design. I would like to see a rough drawing of how this was as compared to how you intend it to come out. It's hard to get a real understanding of what is going on since the collapse. I see all those tarps crumpled up and it makes it confusing. I remember the tarps a moisture barrier(?) for the root cellar, and I think for the house as well. So, this wall is being built inside the moisture barrier area? Anyway, I couldn't do any of this due to physical limitations, but I would love it, it looks like fun! My dream has always been to build an underground house with solar and/or wind power and take advantage of the constant temp, and the storm shelter it provides. Great Job! will be watching every post!

Bags don't last very long - especially in the sun. Have you investigated rammed earth? Or soil cement? Before the Internet, in the 1970s Mother Earth News magazine used to discuss these kinds of things. Anyway, you have my admiration for working toward worthy goals and sticking it to the OneWorldDictatorship a-holes. Just out of curiosity, are children in your future plans?

I admire all the hard work and effort it's taken you both to get this far and I'm happy Peter is there to help you with the expansion. I missed out on the beginning of your Earth bag dome build so this is really exciting to see another beginning happening. As always I wish you all good health and tons of luck. I suspect Jess is film production manager.Preparing these videos must be tedious, time consuming, and a lot of technical issues to overcome A thankless job IMO. Yet every week we get an upload. It’s put together well makes sense, it flows well, we always get a Doggo shot, some nature footage, And it’s explained simply, in a correct sequence for Us outsiders. The videos are fun, humorous , Sometimes Humble - but Always relatable. No small feat! Well done dear Lady!!! 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼

I have lived with debilitating sciatica problems for over ten years, brought on by repeated bending at a former hectic job. I shudder with every can of filler bent over for. Way too late, but a table reaching to half-height would divide the effort between can filler and can dumper. Maybe someone watching could use the idea. Following each video installment with great interest. An oeuvre to be proud of.

Hi Jess and Jim, another great step in your plan. It’s really heartwarming to see that Jess is feeling good. Jim, I am worried about those stairs in the earth as they may again allow a water problem. What are your plans to prevent that? It’s good to see Pete helping it will make the job come together quicker and lift motivation, good on ya mate, Paul from Townsville Oz.

I liked hearing your commentary about protecting the dirt stairs. On a long term, they seem very vulnerable. I suggest using 2" x 12" boards up both sides and lay in wooden steps across your dirt between them. Put 4"x4" posts set in concrete pots outside the inside 2"x12" support running past the edge upward by 3' to put a guard rail on. My main concern may never happen, but I'd rather not find out later that it did. I would love to see you both finish this project.

Ever think about running some of that dirt through a wash plant? There may be some nice gold in it. Gold is right around $2000 per ounce. That could definitely fund a few projects around the property. Just an idea and i know Arizona is full of precious metals and minerals. Keep up the good work!
