Good afternoon, Jeff. Thanks for the quick response on RU-vid. I didn’t see a email address only links to your other social media platforms. First, thank you for the great video content. A lot of my purchasing decisions are based on your reviews. Every year close to Christmas I watch Band of Brothers. I own the blu ray tin collection from 2009? I see there’s a 2015 blu ray release and a 2020 combination w/The Pacific. By chance have you seen all three versions? If so, were there noticeable video/audio improvements in the later versions? I did some researching on Google and Reddit but couldn’t find an answer. Still hoping they’ll release a 4K remaster. I love this series and want to know if my old 2009 tin version doesn’t need to be upgraded just yet. Thanks! Kindly, Bryan B Sent from my iPhone

It was released in November 1942, and won the Oscar in 1943. This IS the 80th anniversary release and I'm so glad it's out on 4k. One of my most favorite movies, top 3.

@@Jimmie_Rudolfsson No, it won best picture at the 1944 Academy Awards for being the best movie in 1943, but according to IMDB it had a New York premiere in 1942, but pretty much every were else, as well as just USA, was in 1943. Still it is the 80th anniversary, and even if you want to count 2023 as the actual 80th it's not uncommon for anniversary releases to be a couple of months early. we are less than 2 months from 23. I don't know if the US got it, but in UK there is a collectors edition that is marketed as the 80th anniversary edition.

it was released 26th November 1942 at the Hollywood Theatre and went on general release in the US on 23rd Jan 1943 and won Oscar for Best Picture on 2nd March 1944 re films from 1943

I know a lot of people that disdain the classics, particularly black & white films. If this sounds like you, please give this movie a chance Casablanca has it all- intrigue, romance, humor. It deserves every bit of praise it's received and is truly a timeless classic.

The problem is also the reverse ..a lot of people praise many old movies that are just bad and boring. Not all those so called "classics" are really that good and not all are bad. As with any time I history there are great movies and crap movies. This one is good, but others like Citizen Kane ..geesh

The negative for Casablanca no longer exists. The studio's best element is a fine grain positive which has less than 2K actual resolution. Whether it was scanned at 4K or not makes no difference. You just get sharper grain. It is possible that the elements were uprezed using a process like Lowry or something similar but I have no information on that. A lot of 4K versions of film derived movies are from 35mm elements that have 2K resolution or less if they have to be restored from printing elements rather than O neg. Films shot in larger formats like 65mm definitely have the native resolution and are perfect for 4K remastering.

This film has so many subtleties, it gets better with every re-watch. The framing when Ilsa enters the bar at around the 48 minute mark is damn perfect. Also I forgot what a creep Captain Renault was, it's easy to miss through all of Claude Rains's charm.

Yes Captain Renault was kind of a scumbag but the friendship between the two was incredible and real, and u really real this at the end.Captain had to defend Major Strassa at the end to make it look good since he was on the phone and whomever was on the other end could here that at least he was being defended by Captain Renault but the Captain knew this and so did Rick even though he said he would shoot the Captain, Rick knew it wouldn't come to that most likely and he was right,Rick also knew he needed someone to trust living in Casablanca and at the end they both knew that their friendship would last that's why there was the famous line at the end Louis,I think this is the beginning of a beautiful friendship.

I just got polar express on 4K/Blu-ray and it’s SO SO GOOD. Ik people think it’s creepy (idk why) but I practically grew up with this film as a kid and watched it every year since. So this means a lot to me and it’s great to have it apart of the collection now :)

I was surprised when Robert Harris’ review said that there was not much improvement with the 4k over the 2012 bluray. Your review is the second glowing report for the 4k so I may have to pick this up when it goes on sale.

HDR 10 and Dolby Vision have a wider color gamut than HD Rec 709 but it means nothing when speaking about greyscale, The aforementioned systems are PQ (Perceptual Quantizer) and not gamma. The PQ space is larger than gamma and is a log-ish space. The improvements in range come from that, not color gamut.

Screenshots never do it justice - always just make it seem darker. But when you actually see it on a big screen... my gawd this movie looks beautiful. I watched Double Indemnity the other day 4k disc, too, and that too looks absolutely stunning.

2.0 mono is just used because of some compatibility quirks on old AVR's with DTS 1.0 cores. The audio on each track is identical, and will play back identically to a DTS 1.0 track played in the same manner (either upmixing or in stereo on a 2.0 speaker setup), there is no increased oomph. Without any upmixing enabled, they will only play to the L&R speakers. With upmixing, it will steer entirely to the center channel unless you have center spread enabled.

The sound on my Bluray with 1.0 Mono is terrible. The speech is so low and you have to Crank it up making the background noise too loud.

@@paulconway384 if you're having a difference between speech and background nosie more likely something else is wrong in your processing chain. As I said, a lossless 1.0 and a mono lossless 2.0 of the same mix result in identical streams. Or you're just listening to a terrible mix on something and the way it was encoded is just an arbitrary factor.

Yes, it can be a little frustrating to triple or more dip on this movie, but I really feel like this is the definitive version. If you got the bug box 70th anniversary, you may want to keep it for the documentary on there.

The Cover picture on the 4k Of Bogart.A picture that looks great but as I understand is from a different Bogart movie I don't remember which movie. This an awesome 4k Bogart style was ment for Black and White Color would have not giving the effect it gave us. My Top 5 films I stared before are 1- 1- Citizen Kane 2-Night of the Living Dead 3-The Train 4-Cassablanca 5-30 seconds over Tokyo.

After seeing your review, I was kind of on the fence about picking this up. Like a lot of 4K releases, I'm not too thrilled about the movies being too dark. Especially with Black and White films. Unlike you, I don't see the crisp whites you mentioned in the screenshots you've shown. Perhaps it's all the years shooting black and white photography I've done, but they (the screenshots) seem genuinely muddy to me. But then, following your link I saw the price on Amazon ($23.79), and I just couldn't help myself!

Thank you for your excellent videos and advise. I'm new to 4K. I watched the live/animated remake of Jungle Book on my 4K player and it "popped"...wow! It seemed to me it was better than when I viewed it on my Apple 4K TV digital movie. Are the 4K physical media discs generally that much better than the 4K digital versions for other movies? For all movies? Comments appreciated.

I may be in the minority, but I prefer mono coming out of the center channel vs the right and left. But that's just personal preference I guess.

I love Casablanca and I am very happy about a new edition that improves the quality of the previous ones, although I also love Gilda by Charles Vidor. Maybe because it takes place in Buenos Aires (a Buenos Aires with mountains!) And I love the dialogue between Gilda and her dance partner when he asks her "where are you from?" Do you know if an edition of Gilda as good as Casablanca is being prepared?

I note the Gruv price about a dollar more than Amazon in your links, but if someone is buying this title by itself and not a Prime member, Gruv has free standard shipping regardless order or price size, and in my experience Gruv ships faster, always inside of a week. Feel better man! I had it for 3 weeks. First 2 days were the worst, tired, sweats and chills. Light sore throat, congestion, and a light cough. Got rid of the cough and sore throat after the first week, but still had the congestion in the second. Finally got rid of that, but in the 3rd was still tired at times so it was still in me. Not fun, hope yours isn't as "bad". Def gonna watch this release, never saw it. Figured it was time. We'll see if I like it enough to buy it.

jeff, there is a looney tunes cartoon in the special features of casablanca which i think played before the amazing panda adventure which pays loving tribute to this film, But it is also a parody its the looney tunes cartoon Carrotblanca in which the looney tunes characters all portray comedic versions of the characters from this movie its a fun cartoon

A true romance Between 4k & B&W a match made in Digital Heaven. Casablanca is on my list. I still enjoyed The Train by John Frankenhymer .I'm sure I didn't spell that right.. The Train is on Bluray. Not sure it has a 4k release yet. So many classics in B&W that this should help in physical media as a whole. So many of 4k movies are $10.00 that will allow these movies to be purchased by fans who only had Blurays in their collection .My top 5 movies are B&W cause Black and White is a color. GOOD VIDEO 😎

Warner Bros seems to have had audio issues in the past with DVDs and such, had a Dirty Harry DVD set, got awful audio to the point uou'd struggle to hear gunfire with the stereo maxed out. Bluray set a few years later? Much better, can actually hear the movie

My Casablanca Blu-Ray has very low speech volume. Some other Warner Blurays do as well, Gun Crazy and Joan Crawfords Possessed. Low dialogue loud music and background noise. Seriously annoys me 😡😡
