I've been saying for a long time on other platforms that my New Orleans has a particularly bad recalled Hang-Tru canopy, since I had it installed recently I wanted to do this video too. I'm not pointing fingers, but recently there's been a lot of down talking in the fan community regarding this recall, people saying certain circumstances make the installation safer, etc. etc. The reality is no recalled fan is ever guaranteed safe without a recall clip, and I don't understand the mentality of just sitting around saying "It's PROBABLY not going to fall" when there’s a simple fix! There are so many factors at play here, in this case my canopy casting is weak, so it has spread open making the socket larger. In other cases the ball can be distorted or just generally too small, or the socket too large from the factory. There are always slight variations in mass manufacturing, and these tiny differences make ALL the difference in the case of this recall. I have a lot of Casablanca fans, this is the worst culprit I own, but I've worked with a couple others that I would absolutely not trust without a clip. And it's not just heavy fans, a couple of the Cambridges I pulled out of a local restaurant were also very close to falling through, and those are amongst the smallest and lightest Casablanca fans affected by the recall.
As always, do as you please with your own fans, but just know that you might lose a fan you love, have property damage, or experience injury to yourself or someone else should your fan fall. These fans falling could easily kill you depending on the circumstances, it's a very serious matter. If you need canopy clips, head on over to my website. My school has four seasons (ii) which were installed with this canopy (smooth). It is stiff when you move it and if you don't move it back it will tilt and stay like that until you move it.

Recently there has been some people who has been saying this video is fake, and you did modify the ball to make it fall. They also had been saying that if it has tooth it’s not going to fall. They also had been claiming you sold clips to companies, and I had been trying to tell them that you would be a baby back in 1994, and recall article that mentions retrofit part is dated 1994. They say that the recall is fake. Also they claim there is only ONE video of it falling which is this video. But how are average people supposed to know it’s going to fall down? And if they don’t know fan is going to fall down, why would have camera ready?

Clearly, people are I D I O T S. Are we talking about children here? They'd better be because the intelligence is lacking. The fact that there aren't really any specific case scenarios is precisely why I made this video. People tend to listen and take things a bit more seriously when they can see it happen. The bulk of cases would've occurred decades ago, before people had their phones and wifi home security cameras running 24/7. Not shocking that there's no other videos, ya dumbs. 🙄 They do realize that my clips look entirely different than all of the others ever produced, right? That doesn't make sense even if the timeline made any sense. What motive would I have for making this up? This video has made $9.14 over its lifetime. Really making bank off those 9,000 super viral views that brought me so much clout. I've said before that I make next to nothing selling clips, but that's not really true anymore. I LOSE a ton of money on them annually now that I sell through the website. Nothing there is paying for itself, but it's good to have the web presence and the shop is convenient, so I take the loss. I've always been one of the most genuine pillars of this community, and don't appreciate the dishonestly that's being insinuated.

So did you compare pre-1994 smooth canopy to ribbed canopy and post-1994 smooth canopy? I have a white Delta II made in May 1993, and it has a smooth canopy and I am wondering if I need a clip. I don't have any other Hang-Tru to compare to.

I don’t think I have anything applicable. I just took kind of a sweep through my fans, didn’t bother checking dates on anything missing the original canopy since that wouldn’t help us. The Delta II that came with a clip is from even later, so as I suspected it’s safe without. So I don’t have a solid answer, but I still think the smooth was probably safe no matter what. It’s such a short span of time, the way I see it they had to have fixed it with the existing reports of falling fans coming in. Tooling something that’s known to be faulty would’ve been too costly of a mistake.

That's what I wanted for it to be. A lot of people have been telling other people that it's no big deal lately, I'm afraid that one of these days somebody is going to be killed. As collectors, we have greater odds of encountering a falling fan than anyone else, since we own 10, 20, 100 more Casablanca fans than most people ever will, and as collectors we should be more responsible for the safety of our fans considering we have the knowledge.

why didn't they just use a ball and socket bracket when they manufactured this fan?

Hang-Tru was one of the first ball/socket systems on the market, most of the systems with a separate bracket that became the norm showed up later. A lot of manufacturers looked to what Casablanca was doing and developed their own designs based on their products, they were at the forefront of ceiling fan innovation. So to answer your question, there was no other generally accepted ball and socket system, they made the system mainstream with Hang-Tru. Unfortunately it doesn’t always work just right on the first try.

I messaged you on Facebook. I should do a video, but it’s also really straightforward. You remove the access hatch, lift the fan out of the canopy, slip the clip in (it simply sits in the bottom of the canopy), and put the fan back in and replace the hatch. Literally takes a minute, nothing too complex.

How likely is it that a normal weight fan will actually fall using this canopy? I don’t know if there is a place to see reports of casablanca fans falling. I came across a few zephyrs from ‘81 with hang tru that wobble horrifically for whatever reason, so that is why I ask. Also, does a sloped ceiling installation affect this? Any answers would be appreciated.

Basically nothing is impossible with this one; it really depends on the integrity of the individual casting. Two of the four Cambridges I pulled out of a restaurant were barely hanging on, one of the Hang-Tru's is slightly spread open like this one. Realistically, the Cambridge is one of the lightest models ever produced by Casablanca, which goes to show there is not a single exclusion to be had. It really doesn't come down to the wobble; the wobble just exacerbates any core issue with the ball and canopy casting fit. You could have a fan with a death wobble hanging on a solid canopy casting and it could be fine forever. But even the slightest wobble on a weak or slightly distorted casting could slowly force the ball further and further through the opening. I don't even necessarily think every fan from the indicated recall period needed to be recalled, but I'm sure it was going to be difficult to pinpoint and only recall the varying problematic batches due to the fact they were not all subsequent, so they just lumped them all together. As for sloped ceilings, I've heard a whole bunch of different things. Some say fans on sloped ceilings were more susceptible to falling, others have said flat was worse. Frankly, I've never had a sloped ceiling to install things on to gather any observations, so I can't really say myself. Of course I've seen just a ball sitting in a canopy at an angle uninstalled, but that doesn't really provide any info on the forces at play. At this point with the greater insight I have into how the batches of castings differed, I'm inclined to say the mounting orientation has little to do with it. There might be some extraneous circumstances due to certain installations, but I have seen no assuring data to prove there is any correlation.

Can you measure the diameter of hole where ball hangs on post-1993 Hang-Tru? I have a 2012 Casablanca Panama II and 1993 Casablanca Delta II and I compared those canopy, no difference. And ball looks like it hangs low and Jean asked me why it’s hanging so low, so it made me kinda suspicious that Panama II which I now have replaced another polished brass 1990-1993 Casablanca. So can you measure the inner diameter of post-1993 Hang-Tru?

Also I have determined that my Hang-Tru on both of my Casablanca are recalled, despite being smooth. So it means that my 2012 Casablanca Panama II replaced another polished brass Casablanca (I guess Delta II). Guess I might have to get 2 clips someday.

Thank you for posting this series. I just recently became aware of the recall and called Casablanca to get the recall clip. The representative told me that the fan was too old and the clip was no longer made. They offered me a discount on a new fan instead. Is there any other way to obtain a recall clip to fix the fan I have?

Yeah, Casablanca's support of products made before ~2013 is not good anymore. They try to make you get a new fan, when this is such a simple fix. I have clips for sale! Email me at info@vintagefansandmore.com and we can talk.

I had a Casablanca fan fall off the ceiling a few months ago when the ball and socket failed. Fortunately nobody was hurt. I wasn’t aware of the recall until I googled the problem. Anyway, I called Casablanca and they asked me to send them the old fan and they sent me a brand new fan and $150 to cover installation costs. But I thought it was really weird that when I mentioned that I had another fan that had the recall on it, they put me on hold for a while and then said “we don’t have the part anymore and even if we did it would only be for the original owner” so I think that whoever my phone rep checked with did not understand the difference between a safety recall and a warranty. It seems really weird that they’d be willing to risk a lawsuit over a $3 clip. The legal fees alone on one bodily injury suit could buy ten thousand clips.

Hello I just recently got myself a brass zephyr and I am worried about its canopy but cannot seem to be able to figure out when the fan was made and the link in the video description is broken could you explain you to find the date my fan w as made? My model number is: 1444T My serial number is: LT19572

Yes, unfortunately the old Casablanca repair site has been taken down. I am trying to get my info page and shop for purchasing clips up on my own website, but keep having setbacks. Your fan is December 19, 1985. 572nd fan off the line that day.

What would happen if you hung a Westinghouse deluxe witch is heavier than a hunter original on a recalled hang tru with no clip ?

Probably depends heavily on the exact canopy's casting. 🤷‍♂️ But I think any result has less to do with the recall and much more to do with the fact that a Deluxe in general shouldn't be on a ball/socket of any format.

Welp, ALL of the major ceiling fan manufacturers have issued product recalls over the years, including Hunter, so this is no unique case and it's easy to fix with a recall clip.

Obviously not, they’d be recalled too if they did. The newer canopies have a beefier, harder casting that does not bend and they redesigned the ball and socket to be a much better fit.

You can use them with any Hang-Tru canopy, but they're clearly not necessary for canopies that do not fall under the recall.

They're a heavy gauge steel, precision-cut by laser. Literal exact same quality as the ones supplied by Casablanca themselves, if not better.

Dimmer burning out a motor is about as rare as fan falling from Hang-Tru. I’ve seen many fans on dimmers which work just fine other than humming noise. But that doesn’t mean dimmer is safe for motor.

Well. I purchased a property that has 4 professionally installed Hunter Originals w/ Hang-trus working w/o issues since the mid 1980s. The ball mechanism looks good. I installed the clips a few years back but still worry about it. Anyone knows the manufacturers weight rating for the Hang-tru system?

@@usergvhhyu1223 I don't know if there was ever a listed weight limit for any variant. At different eras, Casablanca themselves hung some heftier weights from them. It's not ideal, but with the clips installed I would be vastly less worried about it. Yours have been up so long, so there doesn't seem to be any other adjacent issues with the mounting to be concerned about. The clip really takes the weight stress off the casting and becomes a wedge that passes it more-directly to the mounting screws. I'd be most concerned with the canopy spreading open under excess weight, as that's the greatest issue I've personally encountered with some of the thinner/weaker castings, but with a clip in place that can't really happen anymore and the clip itself can't spread much before the screw hole castings stop it. It's also a much smaller opening to contain the ball, thereby improving the margin of error with any ball-related issue. I wouldn't do it myself and would want the correct hardware, but as the years go by I don't think there's much increased risk to your install if something hasn't happened already.
