It happens every few hundred years, and it slams the Oregon Coast with powerful earthquakes and huge tsunami waves.
We're not exactly overdue for it, but it could happen at any time.
The Big One - a Cascadia Subduction Zone Quake - a truly disruptive natural disaster. So 150 miles inland, are we going to feel anything? And what will the impact be on every day life here in Central Oregon?
Central Oregon Daily's Allen Schauffler brings us this look at the Cascadia Subduction Zone and what it could do to our world.
(This first aired in September 2019)

I work with search dogs and there was a disaster training planned here in the NW, we were working with a FEMA guy from DC in charge of trainings like that and he said it was going to be so bad "he prayed he was dead when it happens". The US is in no way as prepared as Japan is for major quakes.

Living in rural western Oregon, we have lived through snow that caused disruption, and we have learned to have food, water, medicine, and other essential things that can last for a month stocked up. When the quake hits the best scenario is that you live through it and have enough essential supplies to make it till roads can be opened back up. Being able to stay put for the first month and wait it out will probably save you from starvation or being a victim of violence from desperate people who didn't prepare.

He's the only geologist I've heard say there's a direct correlation between the Cascadian mega quakes and immediate volcanic activity. Every other geologist says it isn't likely unless the volcano is ready to blow anyway, like Mount Saint Helens.
@deanfirnatine7814
@deanfirnatine7814 Месяц назад
Truth is they do not know for certain, there have been numerous instances where volcanic activity has followed major quakes around the world, most scientists write it off as coincidence but when you just keep having the same "coincidence" maybe is not actually a coincidence. The fact is scientists are consistently wrong and have to revise their working theories. Those volcanoes are here because of that subduction plate.

The Cascadia subduction zone along the Oregon Coast is about 11 miles off the coast. 85 miles from Portland and about 300 miles from Central Oregon. The Cascade mountain range will filter most of the shock wave and water would not reach Central Oregon. Bend needs to prepare for thousands of cars and people escaping the quake from Portland, Medford, Salem, and Eugene. Food, gas would be interrupted for days/weeks due to no deliveries from Portland, Eugene, Salem.

Here on the beautiful island of Oahu, we have nowhere to evacuate to except up. You will get a ton of people that will try to drive up to Tantalus Lookout but in the town areas, the very best option is to evacuate up. Meaning evacuate above the third floor in a building that is more than ten stories tall. One possibility is to build these high rise evacuation shelters next each fire station so that you have Fire and EMS together along with EmComm communications. I say this because we worry about saving residents from a catastrophic tsunami but the conversation never goes to how are we going to save all of our firefighters, paramedics or their vehicles and equipment. Fire Stations in general usually has plenty of food supplies but never enough for an entire community. Ok, think in terms of a catastrophic tsunami has already occurred, each high rise building with survivors is going to be a miniature city for a week or much longer. In each of these cases, shelter, food, water and medicine will take priority, that is a given. Each one of these high rise shelters have a heliport at the very top in order to bring medical personnel and supplies in, with survivor victims going out in an orderly fashion. Just like a battlefield in Vietnam. Communications is going to be very important and by allowing local Amateur radio clubs access to these high rise shelters is going to be equally important. Repeaters and antennas in a linked network such as the DOT Repeater Network in Florida for hurricanes manned by Ham radio operators will help authorities and citizens equally alike. We are talking about digital and analog communications. These structures can be designed to store and power Ham radio communications for the long term. That can be done with wind and solar power in partnership with local Amateur radio clubs, ARES, DEM, American Red Cross and so on. This will also provide emergency electricity by use of DC to AC power inverters that would also include LED lighting also. There can be storage lockers for emergency food such as MRE’s and HDR’s but also emergency hospital supplies also. One plan of thought could be to design each high rise shelter like Walmart does with their “Planograms”, meaning each store is designed the same and easy for customers to go right to the products and items a customer needs and done. Each having the same design should theoretically be cheaper to build. This should also make building permits easier to obtain and to act on in a timely fashion. The goal is to save as many lives as humanly possible but they need to start these processes now, not after the tsunami hits…

It's better to not put supplies in the basement. A small shed in the yard, with water, a camp kitchen, some canned food. One gallon per day per person, for two weeks, is three of the five gallon jugs. A family of four, twelve of them. Also a filter kit to refill all the soon to be empty jugs, from surface sources. That sounds like a lot? It is. The alternative is to buy a good quality filter, and keep clean empty jugs around. And walk your neighborhood, look for ditches, other water. Imagine walking from your home with a cart or wheelbarrow to fill buckets, bring them home, and filter into clean jugs...every few days. Take your pick, make a plan, whatever you're approach, take action now.

The best example to learn of how this natural disaster is gonna look is the japan earthquake that happened in 2010. Way too many videos out there to miss how that water comes in after that quake hits. Just learn to prepare and efficiently make an effort to escape. Having something on the side is better than nothing. Again just look at what happened in japan in 2010 seeing that water rising inland. Same thing will happen but just a different region. Thats just the best way I learned how fast i can be to prepare if anything like that happens.

@@squamishfish I've seen studies that Canada has done on the effects in Vancouver, BC and there will be significant effects. I believe what I saw was underwater mapping of the coastline and islands to predict where tsunami waves could impact and cause the most damage. There's information out there somewhere. The important factor is the length of the fault line and if there is a partial rupture or a full rupture. A partial rupture would be devastating, but the portion(s) of the coastline and inland furthest from the epicenter could see little or no quake damage, although they would still be at risk for a tsunami. A full rupture would cause earthquake damage along the entire length of the coast and inland parallel to the fault rupture. The rupture in 1700 occurred from Oregon, north along the entire length of Vancouver Island and they've found at least some deposits from that tsunami in the channel or inlet on the other side of Vancouver Island, not just the coast facing side. Once the tsunami wave travelled inland through that gap where it's no longer open ocean, the water sort of acted like a cue ball on a pool table as it hit land. The shape of the channel underwater also influenced where the water was directed because more water kept pushing inland so it couldn't just immediately flow back out to sea like a wave hitting an open beach. The water was like a ball on a pool table that travels until it hits something and is deflected in another direction until it hits something again and is deflected again in a different direction and so on until it runs out of energy.
