I learned more about perfume making from "Perfume: The Story of a Murderer" than these kits. I couldn't stop thinking "water? you have to dillute essential oils in alcohol to make perfume!" (And my favorite perfume is Tabu)

From a “stemmyness” standpoint, I’d have to say the first kit was the best at trying to do what it was supposed to do, because at least they attempted some kind of extraction. Granted, it was a pretty bad attempt, but what can you do with a simple diy kit meant to be done in your home, as opposed to actually having access to a fume hood, lab equipment, and proper solvents. However, the last kit does indeed teach engineering: you gotta figure out what went wrong and try to fix the mechanism lmao.

How about explaining the scent layering that goes into creating perfume? Or giving ingredients that could actually make a workable perfume? Even giving essential oils, rather than whatever garbage stank they gave, would've been nice. They all remind me of the majority of bath bomb kits Jackie's reviewed, they were never meant to work, just to steal your money.

@@smol-one I definitely agree and as a mom it's annoying . . . My daughter is in an actually STEAM themed after school program and I've seen them do way better things than this and the kids actually learn something. as for at home, I feel like I can go on Pinterest and find something better to do with my kids and pay for the ingredients and materials at a cheaper cost than buying one of these kits. It's so damn frustrating though because kids see this stuff and want to buy it.

@@smol-one Personally, I would've preferred if they expanded on the extraction process, and explain further the mechanisms involved in taking the tea compounds out of the leaves and cinnamon bits. Stuff like basic polarization, how like dissolves like etc, classic explanation of why oil and water don't mix. As a current undergrad student thinking of pursuing chemistry as a major, and a kid who used to be a massive sucker for these kinds of kits, I would've absolutely loved it if they went in depth about techniques actually used in the lab and whatnot.

I was really hoping the cheap one would shine, oh well. My favorite scent is either Estee Lauders Cinnebar, very spicy and woodsy, or perfume croon the same company called White Linen. It's very clean and fresh. :)

The booklet thing in the cheapest set is probably what most of the $14 went on and there are probably similar books at similar prices for sale. And it still managed to be the best of a bad bunch - there was some history and science information that a child might learn from.

God this video is unearthing memories I had entirely forgotten, mixing weak floral oils from some kit together in test tubes. I definitely had a kit like this as a kid and I was completely obsessed. Funnily enough I make perfume for myself now out of just raw materials but I completely forgot about the kit I was obsessed with as a kid until this video. I can now vividly recall how it smelled. Me and my brother used to go and collect flowers from the woods and make our own perfumes (smell potions as we called them) with the stuff we found around the house/garden/woods and it was free for us and the stuff we used was cheap for our parents. NoArtisticLimitation Last year, the grains put together the codes from the videos, and solved it to reveal a message. I’m guessing it’s the same thing this year, so we would wait until we have all (or most) parts of the code to put it together.

Well, for really getting any scent from flowers as you were saying you would need fresh ones and destialtion aparature :D And I love deep and heavy scents, oriental and woody. Aand my favorite perfume is probably Poison.

About 15 years ago, my aunt got me the nicest perfume kit. My uncle owned a bookstore and she had him give it to her when she saw it. It was a book all about perfumes, history, recipes, science, base notes top notes ECT. With it came 6 or 8 concentrated vials of the scent wheel, glass dropper, glycerine and storage containers for $30 total. Guess if you want a good perfume kit, you'll look in a bookstore and for something not in a kid's section.

Note to Jackie...peel the zest of an orange, add 2T Vanilla Extract into a small jar and then squeeze the zest into the vanilla, mix the zest into the vanilla. Place the jar into a hot-water cupboard for 24 hours uncovered, remove the peel and then seal. Dab the mix on the point your collar bone where it meets your neck and you'll be one happy girl all day - If kept in a cool dark spot, say your undies draw, it will be good to go for about 6 months :)

I use essential oils mainly floral fragrances as perfume mixed together in a spray bottle last good 6-8 hours of strong scent on clothes and about 3-4 hours of strong scent on skin .... This is my life back for really good cheap perfume 😁 and sometimes I mix them just right and smell like expensive perfumes

i'm personally really disappointed that the one kit included cinnamon and suggested adding MORE cinnamon when, spoiler alert: SOME PEOPLE ARE EXTREMELY SENSITIVE TO CINNAMON FRAGRANCE. cinnamon can have a bad reaction with skin in some people, causing a contact rash that may not go away for days. it's extremely unprofessional and irresponsible for them to include something that many people are sensitive to AND also not give a warning about the sensitivity! this is a kit for children!

Even I know you need a low note (woody scents typically), mid note (flowery) and high note (citrus) to make a good perfume because they all evaporate at different rates. This was from a kids mag I read years ago!
