This video is about the legendary Casio fx-602P, one of the best designed calculators of all time.
In the video I talk through its physical design and usage. I show three programming examples, including a program to solve N-Queens and another to output music via the FA-2 cassette adapter.
More more information about the 602p check out the following links:

Got one when they came out, still have it, together with the FA-1 interface and the printer. Excellent little thing.

Got me through my A Levels and University. Still have it, the and cassette adapter and a tape of software. Not used in anger in 30+ years and this video has inspired me to take another look. Just need a cassette player.

I have a LC-79 calculator from 1978-79. I power it using external cells, as the batteries are not standard.

Bought this calculator in 1981 in a jewellery store (thats where they were sold in those days if I remember right). Was pretty expensive at the time for a poor student. This calculator got me through Physics and Mathematical Physics exams no problem. Still got it. Works a dream.

Thank you! I've been trying to remember which Casio model I used for my final exams in EE. This must have been it - the date works and it definitely looks familiar. I credit this with saving my career. I just could not get my head around Control Theory and failed that exam first attempt. The university was very fussy about what calculators were allowed, but it was a blacklist system rather than a whitelist. Most programmable HP and Texas models were banned, certainly anything with a card or tape reader, which I think they thought meant ruling out programmability! I guess being quite new, modest looking, and similar in style to much simpler Casio units, this one got through. There was just enough programmability to go into the exam armed with what I called my "Little Bode Helper", which enabled me to manually sketch Bode Diagrams very quickly. I was surprised it does not have complex number support, so I must have coded that up too. I do not think I would have passed this exam on the second attempt without this edge.

That's a nice story. Yeah it is way more powerful than it looks.

It does require intelligence to program and use this calculator. Not a child's play. So it is quite fair. And I have dealt with bode plots and complex numbers, so I can understand. Now the fx-5800P helps.

I bought one of these when i saw it in a full page advert in the Telegraph in 1981 when it first came out, i was blown away. I had to have it. It was so new i could only buy it at the time from one shop in Holborn London. Cost me around 99£ which was a lot in those days. Also bought the fa2 adaptor for 20£. I still have it. Saw me through Uni and my career. Wasn't the best Casio made, it was the best calculator period before graphing calculators came out.

Together with the earlier (and similar in appearance) fx-501/502p, this calc is indeed among the best and sexiest Casio ever produced. It's really a joy to use, and the alphanumeric mnemonic is a massive improvement over the keycodes displayed by the 501/502. Of course Kraftwerk did their bit in promoting those earlier models with their "music" (read: bleeps and bloops) gimmick: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-9_jNIowu1uk.html

Hello CC, excellent calculator channel and especially vintage ones. I found you since I have a casio fc-200 and I need to program some statistical formulas, but I don't know how and I realize that apparently you have a manual or technique to do it, can you share it?

That's true. I've found the best place to find Casio & Sharp calculators is Yahoo! Japan auctions.

*Update:* Ignore this post. It was probably just RU-vid shenanigans. Deleting comments? How disappointing. I was about to share the video on social media … But no. Not if you delete comments.

Hi. I don't remember deleting any comments on this video. The only ones I've deleted in the past on this stream were posted by spam bots. Not sure what happened, but if it yours please post again.

Probably what happened is if you posted a link to your simulator site RU-vid treated it as spam and deleted it. I added a link to your site on the video description.

@@FX602P-Simulator Ya, RU-vid's comment system is terrible. I've given up on putting in the effort to write substantial comments and posting any links except on my own channel... it's just treats subscribers terribly.
