Great coverage. I already have a trip booked for later this year and this video will help with the locations. Also, completely awesome seeing that Cadillac in action. Did they drive that here from VA on the rails or truck it in?
Thanks JP! Yeah it was a complete surprise to me, they drove it in reverse from Durbin to Cass, overall was a 15 mile trip for the car. Had I known I would’ve went out along the line to see it. Either way was pretty cool!
Interestingly, I think the whistle on Shay 11 is actually a Nathan 6 chime. The C&O 6 chime is MUCH louder and literally howls when sounded at crossings. This particular whistle sounds very much like one legendary Cass engineer Artie Barkley ran on Heisler 6 in the 2000s (I've heard rumors it came from the Meadow River Lumber Co. when Cass purchased two of their engines in the 60s, one of them being the Heisler, but I've never been able to confirm it).
I initially wasn’t sure if it was the C&O 6 either, but the crew who was on the engine that day said that it was so, there’s a chance maybe the valve wasn’t fully open
