How is Tom Brier doing? It's been three years since I've last seen an update regarding his condition. Please don't leave us in the dark. I don't want to watch any more videos from your channel until we get an update.

Hello. My name is Red-Wan. I have been an avid follower of this channel, keeping up with updates for the last ten years, ever since I was an 8-year-old kid. Although I have changed accounts quite a bit, I never forgot this channel. I have always been a big fan of Tom Brier. I found Mr. Brier sightseeing and performing some of my favorite game music back in the day, which inspired me to play the piano. I have kept up with his news ever since his tragic accident, and as someone whose life has been impacted by a beautiful soul like Mr. Brier, I would like to know how he is doing these days.

I am working on it, but as Ron correctly noted, there are many videos by various people from various years and not all of them are even correctly labeled. Some may have been uploaded just with the original file name like “MVI_001” or something. So unless the people uploading the videos are made aware of the project and help out, it may not be possible to find or include those videos. But if some hear about it and do help, that would be great. Also some of the folk who attend these ragtime festivals have passed on and it is unknown in some cases what became of their footage. But your idea is a good one and the next festival I attend I will start asking around (the audience) about any festival video etc of Tom, especially in the early pre-RU-vid days (before 2005/6). I think Tom’s first festival appearance may have been in 1986 or 1987 at the West Coast Ragtime Festival which then was held in Fresno (currently it is held in Rancho Cordova which is a suburb of Sacramento). At least, his first rags were published then. That’s also when I was born (1987). I first met/heard Tom around 2001 at I think the Ragtime Corner at the now defunct Sacramento Jazz Jubilee (later renamed the Sacramento Music Festival) and was blown away. I also met Eric Marchese and Elliott Adams at this event, and went to my first WCRF in 2003. We must have some old footage of Tom kicking around on a CD ROM or hard drive along with our old photos and videos so I will go through those to see what I can find. I know I definitely have footage of him from later than this.

Incidentally this will not take the form of a single large playlist, but rather multiple year-playlists, like my (in progress) series of James Blythe’s recordings and piano rolls on my other channel “Great Pianists”. This is because 1. watching, or going back and catching up, on a playlist with more than 200 videos is exhausting; 2. RU-vid limits playlists now to 200 videos anyway; and 3. Putting it chronologically by year helps a viewer locate a performance more quickly. I hope the ragtime community, who are already like a big (slightly dysfunctional) family, can come together and provide source material such as printed festival programs/schedules etc to pinpoint some of Tom’s festival and concert appearances. It is probably not possible (and maybe invasive) to document all his private practice/composing sessions at home, although perhaps he recorded a few, (I have some of mine), but at least many of his public appearances at various ragtime club meetings and festivals can be listed and documented and then people who attended the events can dig for any missing footage they may have taken, or at least audio recordings and photographs.

Although I am more familiar with the So Cal ragtime scene than the Nor Cal scene, I can still write with some authority that Tom definitely attended SOME meetings of the Sacramento Ragtime Society (SRS), and the Sutter Creek Ragtime Society. These were/are fun monthly meetings like open mics, where amateurs can get up and play ragtime for each other, and talk about history, sheet music etc. The SRS have or had(?) a newsletter documenting each meeting (who was there and who played what) as well as talking about upcoming ragtime events and concerts etc. I am not sure whether a similar newsletter exists for the Sutter Creek society (*actually, I think the correct name is Mother Lode Ragtime Society) but Stevens Price would know, and Ron might know. In Southern California, we had the Maple Leaf Club, the first of this kind, founded in 1968 I think, which met until the 1990s at various venues (and Tom *might* have attended some later meetings of this club but I’m not sure); and then in 1995 the Rose Leaf Ragtime Club was formed (by the late Phil P J Schmidt, along with Ron Ross), which first met in Pasadena, and then various other venues (it currently, late 2022, meets at the Barkley Restaurant and Bar in South Pasadena), and also has a long history of a newsletter documenting who played what etc formerly edited by the late Bill Mitchell, and which Vincent Johnson has taken over, although I don’t think it has been actually published since Bill passed away about 2017. But that would have been after Tom’s accident. Tom did make a couple guest appearances at this club either as a paid feature performer, or at least just stopping by while he was in town. Also in So Cal are the Orange County Ragtime Society (OCRS) founded by Eric Marchese, which has met at various venues including mainly the old Steamers Jazz Club in Fullerton, and currently still meets at various venues including Spice Social, the Indian restaurant where Steamers used to be. Eric (a professional writer/journalist) has documented nearly every OCRS meeting since the beginning on the RagFest website. Tom made guest appearances at a few of them while in town. Finally in So Cal there is the Valley Ragtime Stomp, started by Randy “Doc” Johnson in the San Fernando Valley and currently run by Ron Ross and Pedro Bernardez. They used to meet at Henri’s Restaurant in Canoga Park but moved over to the current venue which is Paoli’s restaurant in Woodland Hills. I don’t believe they have any newsletter documenting who played what when, but for the past 10+(?) years, Randy, and then Robbie Gennet, have been recording each performance on video and posting to the Valley Ragtime Stomp RU-vid channel (they also had an old BlogSpot site, not sure whether that is still up). I do not know whether Tom ever appeared at this particular club or not while visiting So Cal. It was even more recently founded, like around 2008-09. Each one of these three So Cal ragtime clubs has met either monthly (Rose Leaf and VRS) or every other month (OCRS), since the founding, except for during COVID of course. I don’t know about the Nor Cal ragtime club meeting venues or schedules but Ron may know more as I think he has attended many of these.
