Cassette Toilet Emptying in Campervan // Helpful Tips Pros & Cons

Cassette toilet emptying in a camper van is much easier than a traditional blank tank. I'm going to go through the pros & cons of a cassette toilet, how I use the toilet, how it's different than a black tank, and how NOT to empty the cassette cartridge - because there is definitely a way NOT to empty it!
My Hymer Aktiv camper van came with a Thetford cassette toilet instead of the black tank to aid in keeping the weight of the camper van down and also reducing storage needed to hold the container.
In my cassette toilet review, I go over how to use the toilet, the swivel operation, the full tank sensors, how to empty the cartridge, the blade operation, using chemicals to keep the odor down, and where to dump the tank and how often.

I wasn't going to view your video about cassette toilets because I had viewed some others and thought I had a good idea of how it works. But I decided to view it this morning, don't know what changed my mind but I am very glad that I did. Your video was by FAR the most informative that I have seen. Your shared mistake was a very good teaching moment and I appreciate you sharing it. Thanks for being well thought out and keeping it real with good information in a short, concise video. I appreciate it.

Thank you for a complete, thorough and quite detailed look at the cassette toilet system. This is a thoughtful analysis, and is of real benefit to those of us considering RV's utilizing the cassette toilet. Much of what I have seen online has been overly dramatic and negative. But then, why is the cassette system so successful in Europe? The detailed explanation you have provided answers those questions in a positive and natural way.
@AmberJBaldwin
@AmberJBaldwin 6 лет назад
Ronald L Fleming - I agree. It's a very popular method in Europe and it's just not something we're all accustomed to in the states. There's ways to prevent odor and keep it nice and clean. It's just different. Thanks for the great feedback.

👍Thorough demo & very helpful info. I appreciate that you’re showing how it is an easy & clean process to empty the cassette. You really do a terrific job demonstrating / showing that there really isn’t any waste matter on the outside of the cassette so a person can confidently touch / handle it without using gloves. Thank you for all of the effort that went into making, editing & sharing this video with us. 💞

I have a cassette toilet in my a-frame and my favorite thing is no long lines at the dump station. I was camping at a state park over the Labor Day holiday. The lines at the dump station went on for hours. I packed up, drove home and dumped the cassette in my home toilet. I follow the no toilet paper, too.

I read somewhere else that when the "full" light turns on there is actually room in the cassette for one or two more uses.
@AmberJBaldwin
@AmberJBaldwin 6 лет назад
+John Pontier I didn’t see that in my manual but all the literature I received was very light on quality information. Someone else commented as well that there is more room when full. I’ve also opened the blade and flashed a light inside to see how full it was but it’s hard to tell and also I wouldn’t want to drive too much with it being full to the top in case I’m leaked through the blade or pressure button. Yuck. 😞

Story Chasing, check the Thetford specifications or manual for your model, but all the Thetford and Dometic cassette designs I have reviewed in laying out a possible cube truck build have some headroom beyond the "tank full" indicator.

Thank you, Finally an honest review of cassette toilet. What do you do with gray water? You still need a hose and gray can get pretty stinky too if it marinates for more then a week.
@AmberJBaldwin
@AmberJBaldwin 6 лет назад
Dima Habenko well you are so welcome! Thanks for watching! Gray water has a permanent hose attached to it that fits nicely into a small compartment under the cassette cartridge area. It takes a while for that to get full. I'm pretty frugal with water, so I just find a place when it's time to dump like normal. The other thing you can do is empty the gray into the cassette cartridge, about 3 times, and dump the cassette and it keeps it clean. 😁

When I hit the road, I’m going to do my best not to use the toilet in my vehicle. Especially not for #2. Which, that’s going to drive me batty since I don’t like public toilets. Have watched several other channels' reviews/tips about cassette toilets; and you seem to be the first that is using it for both #1 & #2 consistently (instead of #2 only in emergencies) so was informative. Also interesting that you thought the smell was apparently minimal while two other yt channels thought the smell was horrendous when they tried a cassette toilet (they also seemed to utilize for both) compared to a black tank or a compost toilet. Have you ever had problems/issues finding somewhere to empty the cassette when needed?

I’m not living the van life yet but... I think the pros of the cassette far outweigh the cons and I would definitely want a cassette vs. a black tank. And growing up in the country and being on a well and septic isn’t that far removed from a cassette set-up. An FYI about the orange button that you depress when dumping the cassette. It is to break the vacuum on the cassette, not to relieve the pressure. Great content, tnx 4posting 👌

The moisture on the lid is condensation. Normal human temperature is 97-100.8 degrees, depending on the person. If the ambient air is cooler, there will be condensation. I try to leave the lid open (with trap closed) when I am by myself. If I can’t, I lay a paper towel across seat and close the lid. The paper towel will absorb the condensation, and can be disposed of.

Great video, thanks. You are right, there isn't a lot of info on cassette toilets online. The US has a long way to go before it catches up to Europe where these style toilets are more common. I have seen on European cassette toilets a device that might help with the condensation or at least some unintended smells. I think its called a S.O.G. not sure what it stands for but its basically a fan system that pulls the air out of the cassette when you open the blade. Not quite sure why its not sold here? Perhaps one of your viewers have a better idea?

P S...how does this work? I assume the bags are for a 1-time deposit only, right? You wouldn't leave your deposit to slosh around in the bags while you drive or move about the RV, right? Step 1, line the toilet with the bags. Step 2, do your business, Step 3, securely tie the bag. Step 4, immediately walk it over to the dump. Is that how it works?

@@barbgeyer1779 I have worked for the elderly and often times they have a portable bedside commode. It is just a bucket with a toilet seat and hand rails and the family or caregiver empties the waste into a toilet and cleans it out. WELL you get a whole lot of smells that way. Turns out a lot of families you cat litter or wood chips. Just put a plastic bag in the bucket, add cat liter or wood chips. After you do your business, tie up the bag and place in regular trash. No difference than emptying a cat litter box or baby diapers. Smells better also than a wet system.

Nice video Amber, is it plausible to have 2 canisters for one toilet? Like an emergency one ... So, you would pull out the full one and replace it with the empty one and just store the full one until it’s convenient to dump it. Would that work, if so you would have eight days versus four.

David Gabrie I have the same question. A lot of people who live on narrowboats in the UK carry a spare cassette. I’m not sure where you’d store the full one in an RV though 🤢
@AmberJBaldwin
@AmberJBaldwin 6 лет назад
David - You could and I've heard of people doing that, but then you have to store it somewhere AND make sure it doesn't roll around. Every inch of the Hymer is valuable space and for me, I just wouldn't want to use the space for it. I seem to get by pretty well with the emptying every 4-5 days as I'm moving around enough to not have to worry about it.

Have you considered removing the water based toilet and installing in it's place a composting toilet? Would that be an option when purchasing new? Composting toilets require less attention than a water-based system.

Very informative Amber. I have a cassette toilet aswell. I also bought a female urinal funnel. This is going to be a silly question. Do you need a grey water hose to empty the grey tanks?

I have a cassette toilet in my van, not nearly as fancy as yours,it is just a two piece type that is fully portable and basic I really like it. A lot of people seem to think it is gross to empty them or they smell bad or whatever but I disagree.there IS a little bit of a learning curve though, you covered those issues well but i'll add a couple 1) if you are traveling from high altitudes to low or vice versa, or extreme cold to hot, it is a good idea to open the flush valve a bit so pressure cant build up inside, not fun to open and get sprayed in the face SWISH!!!! ….MMM YUCK. 2) when you use the toilet it is best to open the valve and just poop directly down thru the hole into the holding tank, mine does not fill the bowl with water, so if you crap in there it makes a mess but if you just open the flush valve its a straight shot down to poopyland,very rarely any streaking in the bowl to clean.mine is the type that you pull open and it will stay open until you close it, I know not all are that way. 3) when you empty into a residential toilet, go all or nothing, just pour it quickly, if you go too slow it fills the toilet way too much and you have to manually flush , if you just dump it it causes the toilet to flush from the force of the water (poop) pouring in. #4) the longer you wait to empty it the LESS it will smell. I am a weekend warrior , not a full timer, so whenever I use my toilet ill wait until the next weekend or even longer before I dump it, letting the chemicals have time to do there work, you will have a nice greenish LIDUID that has a mild smell of chemical at that point. if you dump too soon you will smell dookie AND it will be unpleasantly cloppy. so if possible dont empty sooner than about 5 days after the first....deposit. I have the same issue with condensation, I do find that irritating and gross even though the condensation is not actually PEE its just water vapor and doesnt smell or anything it is still bothersome. I wonder if taping a few packets of silica gel to the underside of the lid would stop that.....I 'll try it and let you know.

Since you're being honest to tell that you use the cassette for all your business...just wondering if there are odor issues when you wait 3 or 4 days between emptying? Or even if just for #1 for a couple days? Had to laugh about the full sensor...hadn't thought about that. Someone commented about putting paper in a trash can...in Spain and several other countries this is normal due to small and old sewer lines...not that big a deal. Good video!
@AmberJBaldwin
@AmberJBaldwin 6 лет назад
Stephen Stringer I have smelled some odors from there when it gets really hot outside. I've been trying out several different brands and types of chemicals to see which one is better. Mostly they seem to all be the same. lol oh that moment was awful Stephen! Just awful! Yes and people with septic tanks use the TP trash method too. I don't want to buy special toilet paper and it just fills up the cassette more so you have to empty more frequently.

@AmberJBaldwin 6 лет назад
Kees H - What model is yours? I actually flash a light down in the toilet now, when it reaches full like that, but it makes me nervous to drive with that full light is on (and still using the toilet) in case anything decides to slosh from being too full.

Story Chasing I have a Thetford C260 model. According to the manual, when the light goes on there is 2 liter capacity left. That should suffice to get you through the night, certainly if you don’t flush.

I am trying to find out if it freezes. Many use compost tilets for that reason. I would prefer the cassette, but only if it can withstand the freezing. I know there is a type of RV antifreeze you can use, but I would prefer not using any chemicals. Distilled vinegar is the best cleaner to use.

I have learned to conserve water. The question is do you use those tablets they sell to put in RV toilets?
@AmberJBaldwin
@AmberJBaldwin 6 лет назад
When you say "tablets" do you mean those pod packets that are chemicals to keep the inside cleaned, unclogged and break down material? If so I use the liquid chemicals in the video that do the same thing. The pods are more convenient and I used those a lot in my traditional black tank in my other RV.

How long can you go before you have to empty the cassette? Can you boondock for 2 weeks between dumps?
@AmberJBaldwin

Allen Freeman I usually have to empty about every 5 days. The only way I can extend that is to go to the bathroom outside and bag the #2. So I do that sometimes too to boondock longer. If any women are looking at this comment, PStyle offers a solution so we can stand up and urinate outside and it works really really well.

I just want to be clear. Some people only use the cassette for #1 only; some use for #1 and #2, and some use for #1, #2, and the toilet paper. You use (recommend) using the cassette for #1 and #2 only and NO TP. Is that right? thanks...
