You might wonder where you can start in the world of analog? The Answer is cassette. Let these compact sturdy capsules of tape, ease you into the physical land of music production. Here I show you the many options for recorders and tapes. They all serve a different purpose in my workflow, and I hope my experience can shed some insight on what would be best for your personal journey. Have a question? Drop it in the comments. Stay tuned, the next chapter is full tutorial! The "ins and outs". But for now lets get familiar with the materials themselves.
When it comes to tapes, I swear by RTM. For a tape that is fresh, easy to find and sounds just as crispy as my favorite new old stock brand. Hear for yourself on the cassette brand shoot out. And they have been kind enough to partner up with vvundertone! Offering a 10% discount via affiliate link.

I wonder how long it’s going to take for everyone to figure out about this dude who is batting so far out of his league that it doesn’t even make sense. Pick any single thing going on his videos - sound or visual - and it’s cooler than anything else that could be made with a warehouse full of expensive, vintage equipment and with a style and elegance that a major production house couldn’t properly imitate. Insane talent. Makes make me question why I’ve got all this expensive vintage hardware because he does it better than with a sample and a broken cassette player. Never ceases to amaze me, man. Your videos get the inspiration flowing in a way that not many other things do and I’m going to keep telling you how much I enjoy your channel.

I can tell a lot of work went into this video, the editing, the waveform comparison. The EQ of the tapes. People that talk about tapes are normally.... well.... different. Its refreshing to have someone point out its beauty and not "WOAH check out my heckin lo-fi chill beat maker!!!"

This video is awesome! I know the video is sponsored by Recording The Masters. They are awesome and all that, but for those of us who like to hunt for royaltyfree samples and soundclips, nothing beats the meat quite like crusty old home recordings on cassettes. You know, the ones that aren't of vinyls or the radio. People used to record the weirdest things, go thrifting and make some techno! 😅

I make up the lack of phantom power on my Yamaha MT50 by feeding the master out of a Mackie Blend 6 into the inputs of a machine. Makes it somewhat less portable but it sounds so nice going through 2 preamps before hitting the tape

I've been working on a custom mellotron/tape echo style unit that instead of open tape loops we use a library of standard cassettes, or my favorite, the nice fat wide "8-track" style tape, which is already a huge loop where the cassette is end to end.

Ive got a pair of m7's and f96's as well! I like plugging into guitar amps and using it for distorted vocals, and the f96's are great as OH's--despite not being level matched. Try em out with pedals if you haven't all ready.

Rambling comment: I'm relatively new to tape, but I've been getting heavily into 4-track cassette and now I'm pretty much hooked. It makes me weirdly sad though, thinking about how there are no new cassette machines being made (or reel-to-reels, which I'd love to upgrade to if I can ever afford one.) There's a kind of dread knowing that this way of making music is considered obsolete and won't be possible fairly soon. Skeptical people online always say 'just use a plugin, it can sound the same' well even so, my Portastudio never interrupts me because of plugin license issue, there's no CPU latency, and because I only have a few pieces of hardware I never get stuck deciding how to do something. A Portastudio is actually much easier to use and more practical than a DAW in many ways!

I disagree, I used cassettes for years and real hated the way they deteriorated leaving oxidation on the tape heads, and the way they would miss align and end up twisting on rewind or fast forward. Sound was good yes but mechanically they are rubbish.
@judenihal

This is like converting a WAV file to a 128 kbps MP3 and then converting it back to WAV. Cassette quality is horrible, and you're just losing sound quality by recording your CDs to Cassettes and then back to CD. If you want real analog sound, record your music directly onto reel to reel tape and then archive it into computer, and then edit from there!
