Mixing Drums - "Vintage" Organic Style Using Plugins

Today I open a un-touched drum tracking session and start my mix process. After this I will most likely run the sounds thru some analog processing and into ¼ tape before officially chopping and packaging the new Sample Pack.
Shout out @digitalnic0 for letting me come over and record!

yoo thanks for the vid :) as for compressors plugins on drums: i love the "kolin" compressor by analog obsession on 50% wet parallel, i think it sounds really sweet (and its free)- the vulf compressor has much more "sound", pretty intense and aggressive but i love it- very unique.

Great video! Very solid mixing fundamentals. Since you mentioned you were looking for a compressor, my go-to for drums is the Kramer PIE Compressor from Waves, which is a model of the PYE compressors they had at Olympic Studios, and even using it very subtly, it really brings the drums forward in the mix. I also second the person who mentioned Kolin by Analog Obsession, a model of a Collins 26U-1 vari-mu, and which is great in parallel. Aside from that, Arturia makes really good compressors (their 1176 is fantastic, as is the 33609, and their dbx emulation is so smooth-I love it on overheads). The Softube Tube-Tech compressor is great. The bx_townhouse is good SSL bus compressor. The Lindell SBC is a very solid API compressor. The DPR-402 (also by Waves) is good for when you wanna mess things up.

Appreciate it! Its dangerous water but nothing sounds better than a ribbon on kick. Some are better at taking the high SPL's. There is also a specific way to mic it so the air doesn't hit the ribbon by tilting the microphone. After that I dig EV RE-20, and sometimes large diaphragm condensers.

Nothing in my studio is for decoration. If it doesn't work I send it out. Tape is my favorite medium. This is actually the first time I posted a computer centric video. I have a collection of various tape machines and use them regularly. In fact this exact session was just printed to tape yesterday. I just think in the digital world some things don't quite stack up what they are modeled after. When I use plugin compression, something feels cartoonish and plastic about them. I feel like I can't push them too much because they start to sonically crumble. Hard to articulate, and could be because I record a lot with microphones rather than software instruments.

@@aryabanerjee1179 the vintage mics you’re referring to I’m assuming are FET 47’s, royer 121, u67, 421, etc.. yes these are sought after vintage mics. But by no means strictly give you a “vintage drum sound”. That sound is created by how the drummer plays the set, what kind of set it is, dampening or no dampening, the room size, mic placement, tape saturation, and much more. I would say “vintage mics” are at the last of my concerns when getting a sound

Guys, music producer content creators should just skip intros and life story, and just go straight to the material. Majority of Music producers are not elementary anymore. I had to skip this video, im just tired of hearinn life stories instead of what the thumbnail entails

Not so sure I agree 100% with your police work there. The original recording is bad. You used a bunch of bad dynamic mics, presumably because they look cool and have hipster mojo? All these plugins are just wrenching tortured high frequencies out of bad tracking, and compressing the hell out of them. There are easier ways to get bad drum tracks, such as a crappy drum machine plugin. This looks like a textbook case of hearing with your eyes. Entertaining video anyway - "it's the journey," right?

Mono can be deceiving. Most people attribute a good drum sound to wide crispy stereo condenser Fleetwood Mac kinda tones and I do that style too. This time I went for a purposefully grimy sound. No ones going to think "hipster mojo" when the loops get placed in a actual record, they will most likely just be listening to the words!

@@vvundertone Yeah, no dis intended in the comment, it's clear you enjoy process over product, which lifts the lid on a lot of interesting process techniques for others. I guess I'm just an old scholar because I can't get my head around using the mic that came with a 70s tape deck. 😆

Your reply just reeks of the cranky ramblings of a jaded and aged live sound engineer putting down someone else’s work to make your shortcomings feel better, to give your broken ego a little pat on the back as you spew your worthless opinion disguised as helpful feedback

@@UncleSubBass I hear you, but truthfully that Akai M7 (if thats what your referring to since it most definitely came from a tape deck) is quite amazing sounding. I have a microphone shootout video and filming it was the first time I got to hear all these mics side by side myself and if theres any one that people keep asking about over and over its that M7! Its a sleeper and sounds quite stunning. Appreciate your insight!

@@vvundertone Checked out that shootout. They all certainly look cool, and sound like the 70s. Most would be appropriate for the Principal to announce that today's lunch with be tater tots and meatloaf over the PA system at George Washington Elementary School on a rainy March day in 1981, or announcing which gate the bus to Schenectady will leave from. If the next Bjork is using them to make mind-blowing art now, godspeed to her. I 100% agree with don't let gear hold you back, and always do things differently just for the sake of making something new.

You know what. This sucked. Distortion plugin on saturation plugin on distortion plugin on buzzword plugin (god particle lol srsly) tape plugin distortion plugin tape plugin... honestly, its like watching a 16 year old cooking a pasta in a dorm room and pouring a glass of cheap wine. Get some perspective lol

Yeah, how dare you affect your audio files until you get a result you enjoy, that's almost like mixing or something. 😂

At the end of the day its all just a matter of taste. For all I know your favorite band might be Imagine Dragons. All I am trying to do here is replicate my favorite music from the 60s and 70s which have a lot of noise, saturation, aura and color to the sound. If you prefer Nickelbacks drum sound its fine bro.
