Only Tom Hanks can have the world crying over a volleyball.

I reckon they missed an opportunity in the movie "Sully", I mean how hard was it to have a volleyball in the overhead compartment, or under a seat and for it to start floating as the plane filled with water, Imagine Tom hanks yelling out "IS ANYONE HERE", and we then see a volleyball float into the isle :-)

I’ve watched quite a few reactions over the last few years & maybe it’s just me, but it seems like a lot of the younger generation doesn’t seem to understand subtext. Like, at all.. I’m not sure what happened, but I’ve watched them become completely confused when they watch movies from the 70’s, 80’s & 90’s. Confused by things that we readily understood, even as kids. I don’t know how to explain it, but I find it both sad & troubling.

I have always said that if you notice, in the end, to celebrate his return, they served the most expensive ... SEAFOOD. Pretty sure the last thing Tom wanted to eat and celebrate his return with would be seafood. I believe this was used to reflect how the people are doing this to make themselves feel better, to give them some catharsis for giving up. It wasn't about Tom , it was about themselves.

1. Chuck was (lucky?) that he was chasing that pocket watch and out of his seat. Otherwise he would have died in the crash. 2. It's a damned good thing he's resourceful. 3. The bright side is that there're aren't any dangerous animals on the island. The dark side is that there aren't animals he can eat either. 4. "A big one" That's what she said. LOL 5. Aside from Chuck himself I've never seen anybody so happier that he made fire than Ellie. 6. He's upper management. Imagine how much back pay is in store for him. If he wanted to he wouldn't have to work again. 7. In a recent interview Hanks said at the cross road of Chuck's new life he went back to the winged lady. 8. I love Ellie. There was a 14-month break in the making of the film to give Hanks the time needed to do this. It was the second time he had to lose weight for a film. The first was during the filming of Philadelphia (1993). In that film, he played a lawyer who was HIV-Positive. They both arrive at the island bloated, fat, pale, hairless... through the hardship of survival both of them are bloodstained and turn leather-brown and thin in the sunlight. When he creates and befriends Wilson he makes a mirror-image companion in the spirit of his own self. You may notice he and Wilson almost always disagree, as one often does with the voices within ourselves. When Wilson is lost, a part of him is lost too. He has to say goodbye to that temporary but necessary part of himself that he once needed to survive... in order to survive. That's why it's so powerful.

8:35 - It's not explained in the movie, but it must've been a malfunction that caused an explosion which opened a hole in the plane somewhere. It's that windy because at flight altitude the pressure inside the plane is much higher than outside so everything gets sucked out. It's scary but that's what happens in case of decompression, hope we'll never have to experience it. The good new is that a plane cannot actually go down so fast unless it loses its wings so in real life this accident could be very probably survivable (unless you have an heart attack from fear). 8:40 - And that's why we have to keep our seat belts fastened at all time on a plane. 27:04 - It is but it takes hours and hours to start a fire by friction (it's very realistic) and yet is the first thing you have to do in a survival situation. 31:11 - And that wouldn't solve the problem as a dentist shoud remove surgically the sack where the pus accumulates or it will fill up again. 37:10 - I think the meaning is that it helps him staying alive the thought that he had to deliver at least one package considering his dedication to work. So he keeps one parcel closed. There was a joke back then for an advertisement where at the end of the movie he asks the redhead what's inside and it was a satellite telephone, a fishing rod, and other useful things to survive. 43:07 - When I watched this movie at the cinema as a child it was so weird that EVERYBODY around me was crying. But even back then I got it, Wilson wasn't just a ball. 44:39 - I've always found it surprising that he could fly ever again. 52:50 - And he has a new Wilson ball! 52:54 - Notice how the name Dick is missing from the arc. It means that the readhead has left the cowboy guy from the beginning ;) At the ending nobody really know what will happen. It's the perfect ending because we can decide in our mind what is going to happen. Most people choose that he follows the redhead.

I love how they used whales 🐋 in this movie, whales are known for protecting u from other predators, their sound alone underwater can boil u alive and other whales in the area will flap the water with their tails which can be heard for Miles and miles underwater and predators stay away, im guessing that whale sticked around since he left the Island to when the ship found him.. Whales sure are special💕🐋

I don't know if you've ever listened to the particular DVD commentary, but the whale looked at him to give him a sense of acknowledgment because they sensed he had been alone for a long time. I always thought there was supposed to be something special about that scene, and I'm glad I understand it now.

FWIW, Kelly's husband wasn't stopping her from seeing Chuck; in the parking lot it's much more likely he was keeping her from forcing herself to go in there even though she was clearly not ready (which she would have told him setting him up to go talk to Chuck in the first place). Actually really feel for her husband. He's not an idiot and I seriously doubt he was sleeping peacefully while she and Chuck visited downstairs, or even while she ran out to kiss him. Poor bastard was probably just laying awake wondering if he'd still have a wife in the morning.

so much emotion in this movie and the lack of soundtrack while on the island, just to add to silent, isolated feeling. Also, many seem to miss this but the piece on the raft that gets caught is the transponder, that would have given the search parties his exact location. It gets caught and ripped off the raft, then sinks with the plane.

Talking to Wilson was the only thing keeping him sane, that package he never opened was the only thing left giving him purpose, so that he would have to stay alive and get out of that island to deliver it.

It's " Not Just a ball " ........Nobody ever had a better physiological friend than Chuck Noland had in Wilson . Wilson never complained, so very supportive, never talked out of turn, someone to tell all your complaints and struggles to, knowing they have nothing but your back. Keeping your secrets a must. We all need a Wilson ! At least when no ones looking .

The musical score superbly done. the same notes bring sadness and at other times Hope. The acting is so intensely good in so many places. The Hug given at 48:11 ...you can feel the need, The touch of closeness. Nolan at first holding back but the giving totally in to it. That kiss at 15:40 is what I want to give my late wife when I see her again. She passed away in 2009 from cancer, Married for 30 years and the only girl I ever kissed. There has Never been another since 2009 and I want to so much to do it again with only her. She was the only Love of my life and I have not let her go but I ........."will keep Breathing".

The situation where he returns and she has moved on is one of the most heart wrenching moments. He still loves her and she still loves him, but how can they love each other without hurting others. No one wins. You know her husband knows she still loves him and that her staying with him means she has to lose him all over again. What a wonderfully tragic scene.

When we are alone we almost get attached by each and every stuff that made us alive... Specially when wilson as a friend came in his life give him some kinda balance that he's not alone... Even he's imaginary for us but for him he's real as a person and the closest thing to him!! That really broke my heart... Cuz i used to talk with one of my toy when i was younger and any kinda problems i had, i used to share and pretend as same... The amazing thing was when i talk to him things actually clarified... Moments when I can't deal with gives me some kinda clarification and i know it was all coming from me but it was like he was here.. then one day in an festival my mom invited some of my classmates cuz i most of the time was lonely and those goons took him from my room and I wasn't aware later when i was searching for my toy one of my classmates told me that other dudes took the toy and tied it with a rocket and blew it... In that night i was searching everywhere atleast a small piece of him would give some peace.. it was so heart broken for me.. later my mom gifted me the same toy... For few days it wasn't like my old one... Because there was something with my old toy... The old toy was made by my grandfather the day when i was born... We both were together from the very beginning... Every moment i shared everytime i was alone all the moments and situations that he was with me made him alive for me!!!

He needs to be needed. He needs to be the messenger for the final package, just as he needs to be Wilson's caretaker. Those are the things that will make him excel, beyond any expectation, and so those are the things his mind creates, to motivate him. Brains are pretty clever at helping you survive.

Ellie, did you notice the Wings on the back of her truck... The same Wings on the package he delivered. It is said by some, there are no accidents no coincidences. And out of all the people he should meet on a lonely stretch of rode in the middle of nowhere, but the person for whom the one package was ment.

I love your reactions sweetheart. You have loving soul and spirit. One thing about the movie I think most people miss is the double meaning in the title. Chuck Nolan was certainly a castaway (one word) stranded on that island, but the title is two words, "Cast Away". The whole time Chuck was stranded, the hope of getting back to Kelly kept him alive. He finally escaped only to learn she had (reluctantly) Cast him Away and married Jerry.
