CAST AWAY Clip - "Setting Sail" (2000) Tom Hanks 

I was working at a Marina as a dock hand and a grey whale swam through. I was out at an end pier when it swam by. It rolled over and looked at me just like that. I will never forget that moment as we locked eyes and acknowledged eachother. To this day, I have always kept this moment of my life to myself because I thought no one would believe me, and I wouldn't care if you didn't. It was a magical moment between myself and nature.

His expression, at the time of looking back at the island, is awesome.

When he looks back at the island with a bittersweet expression. It saved him, but it was also killing him. To decide to risk it and get off the safety of the island after it served him for all those years...sometimes I find myself looking back at my own island as I get back into that rough water on my journey of growth and I have the same look in my eyes.

Truly one of Tom Hanks best films, Hard to believe he DID’NT win the Oscar for this one

When he looks back at the island, is the first time in the movie that there is any music...brilliant and powerful!

Now that I have grown, watching this brave man crest that wave and stare at the island that was his home for many days. After all these years, I understand.

One of the best things about this movie is the lack of music. When Chuck is on the island, there is no music (to intensify the feeling of isolation) until this scene. One of the most beautiful scores isn't heard until the last 1/4 of a movie, and it elevates this film. It is the score when Wilson drifts away, and when Kelly is brought back home. Incredibly bittersweet

The part that he was looking for the last time at the island always gets to me. It reminds me of my brother’s passing 20 years ago, him leaving this World but I know I will see him again…

We did it Wilson ❤ the most beautiful line in entire movie ❤

We cried so much for Wilson. Geez, when a man can make you believe in his acting a basketball is a person, that is acting skills! Did Mr. Hanks ever receive the highest award for this movie? One of his best movies ever.

Let go of people when casted away, let go of appearances, then one day let go of island his only home for many years, then let go of his only friend Wilson during the time he was on island, then let go of his woman he wanted to see again when he is on land! Then finally at cross roads, he decides to let go the feeling of loss !! An amazing journey that almost all of us go through

So kelly has a baby that is 3 years old...he was on the island for 4 years which means 3 months after he crashed on the island she got knocked up by the dentist. So much for mourning.

Wilson shouldve gotten an oscar.

This IS what a beach launch is like. Its so daunting. Once the wave passes and you see how low the water around you is, you can't believe that you haven't appeared to move an inch. And there is always that final wave that makes you question your launch. But once you pass it, it's over. It's easier to be a mile out at sea than it is to be 100 yards from shore. As a boater, he's a bit insane going out with just two oars, even given his limits. You always want multiple means of locomotion. He has two: oars and sail. He really wants 3 - i.e. another back up. That said, having two methods of propelling himself is great given his situation. The only other thing I question is the size of his boat: perhaps a bit wider and longer... but then he has to row the thing. A fun side note: when the whale appears its easier to see a connection between this movie and Forest Gump. It's a Forest Gump jogging moment.

When he looked back at the island, he was somewhat sad. He was happy his sail worked and happy to be hopefully sailing back to society. But that island was his home for 4 years. A part of him will always miss the island.

3:08 the island saying: if you want to leave, then leave; we've got storms and waves, just like everywhere else, but I'm not going anywhere.

That Island was a blessing in disguise. . The Earth literally rose up for his use, . . It saved him and strengthened him. And then faded away back into the nothing.

CAST AWAY 2 will show him rowing back to the island in 2023

This part and the ending where he talks to the lady that sent the package are my favorite scenes on the movie. I live the boyish demeanor he has from being on his own for so long too. It was like a rebirth and maybe he'll be less of a jerk and give his new girlfriend more of his time instead of his job.

Not often mentioned but the whale staying with him until he is rescued likely kept any sharks in the area away from him.

Wilson had one job: hang on. He couldn't even do that correctly. Some friend...

What a crying shame Gladiator and Cast Away were both in the same year This movie and performance is phenomenal, as was Russell Crowe's in Gladiator Both so oscar worthy

Im pretty sure when I watched this movie for the 1st time it gave me my base anxieties lol.

This is such a great movie. So many emotions, but so well done, and whoever came up with the idea of having the Wilson ball as his companion is a genius.

Whale: Yo, what's up?? moving places??

Am I the only one to realize there is water in every scene? Snow, rain, ocean, ice in a glass, bottled water. Even when he walked into the room after the welcome home ceremony, there was this lonely bottle of water sitting on an arm rest of a chair.

Fun fact: Sales of Wilson volleyballs improved marginally for a bit after this film was released. The “bloody palmprint” model was popular with children and marooned sailors. 🏐

That whale scares the hell out of me. The thought of a massive creature just being under you and you don't know it's there. Or you turn around and just see an eye staring at you from the water...

Seeing a whale up close that exposed in the water would frighten me to death. I would never be able to stay calm if a whale was that close to me I’m terrified of sharks, but whales frightened me even more because of their size. I know they don’t harm you, but they just frighten me to death because of their size.

Great scene but personally I would have launched from the other side of the island.

Great scene, love the whale bit. Maybe this is ignorant of me, but I feel like with 100% time devotion, over the course of years you could build yourself a really fly ship. Not a dozen logs tied together. But like did he never think to build a band saw? No but seriously you could build yourself a reasonable vessel with years of focused labour
