i'm so mad you two talked over Wilson's dialogue! like, almost all of it!

“Wilson! Wilson I’m SORRY!!” Gets me everytime

I love that the writer knew, I’m gonna make people cry over a volleyball before this movie ends.

This movie was filmed in two parts, with a one year break in between for Tom Hanks to get into shape for the rest of the movie. I’m that time, Robert Zemeckis filmed an entire other movie, What Lies Beneath. He even used the same crew for both movies to ensure everyone was available and had steady work in between.

As a violinist, I had the privilege of performing on the score for this film. I’ll always love the typical big, Hollywood sound, but the intimate writing of Alan Silvestri for this project makes it one of my favorites. Thanks for sharing your reaction!

This film just never gets old, the way that they managed to get all the emotions right, from the despair of being marooned, the pure joy of finally having fire. And then the way they show, how easy and trivial it is to get these things in the modern world, fire, light, food, shelter.

Tom Hanks was asked about the end of the movie. He said “Of course it wasn’t written but if it were me after four years, I’d be after the girl in the truck”.

"Did he clean the wound first?" Salty ocean water is actually excellent for that.

Tom Hanks's cinematic run between 1992 and 2000 was just incredible: A League of Their Own Philadelphia Forrest Gump Toy Story Apollo 13 That Thing You Do! Saving Private Ryan The Green Mile Toy Story 2 Cast Away That honestly could be the best decade run any actor/actress ever had.

George: It's literally just Tom Hanks carrying the movie. Wilson: Am I a joke to you? Sorry, had to be done.

He wasn't thinking about the crab legs or the sushi, it was probably more about how much food was being wasted since he spent those years with food being hard to come by.

Tom Hanks is SOOOO good, he made grown men cry over the loss of a volleyball.

I saw this in the theater. One of the saddest moments is actually when he leaves the island. That was his home for 5 years. The initial leaving would actually be hard to do. Any break from your norm even marooned on an island would be hard. Being in the military and being deployed overseas is hard. When it’s time to rotate back, it’s a weird feeling, happy and sad. It only last until I’m in the air, but it’s there.

You know the writing, directing, acting and score are all absolutely top notch when you end up crying over a volleyball.

Although the movie ends kind of on a cliffhanger, you notice the wind is blowing in the direction of the woman and the movie closes with Tom Hanks looking in that same direction -- it's a callback to when the wind was blowing out to sea after his 4 years on the island.

My favorite scene is the contrast to the primitive conditions he had, building that raft out of driftwood and sticks, to the gigantic container ship. Humanity made that trek from sticks and fire to building 1,000 foot long ships that cross the oceans in a matter of a few days with ease and comfort (relatively). It's really cool to see.

fantastic movie + reaction! Hank's is incredible in this (and all) movies. A nice touch was that there is no music while he's on the island, only once he successfully escapes, the music returns :)

Little factoid: the "desert" in "desert island" means that the island is deserted/uninhabited -- not that it's dry. So, yes, technically he was on a "desert island".

Nobody ever talks about it, but I think that "Castaway" is one of the low-key greatest films ever made. Especially for this particular category of depiction of human hardship. The whole "I'm sorry Wilson!" scene still makes me tear up, and I've been watching this movie for seventeen years.

The other thing you didn't notice was the entire time he was on the island there was no music. The losing Wilson scene gets everyone. I saw this twice in the theaters and I could hear crying in the entire theater.

castaway is a beautiful movie and masterfully done. everyone loves the Wilson joke and its all funny watching a guy talk to a volley ball... then u slowly feel his isolation and u understand it... then by the end u are upset for him losing a volley ball... its so brilliantly done. hanks is a fantastic actor 👏

The package saved his life because it helped keep hope alive. The contents of the box didn't save him, but the wings symbol motivated him to keep going. He respectfully never opened the box with the decision to return it. In BTS clips, the director joked in an interview that the package contained a satellite phone.

You are correct, George, that the place LOOKS like somewhere you'd want to go: It was filmed on the back side of Honolulu I believe [one of the Hawaiian islands] The one of the things that it takes a few watches to catch: When the boat finally finds him, you can faintly still hear the whale clearing it's blowhole, which would suggest that the whale was his silent companion ever since it breached. At the end it was like "look! I brought boat! I do good hooman?"

Even though this was the fourth time Tom Hanks was nominated for the Best Actor Oscar (and the first one since BIG that he didn't win), CASTAWAY is really one of Hanks' most amazing performances since he is nearly on his own through nearly over 90 minutes (and WHO ELSE could be so compelling with acting against a volleyball???)

Simone, love the You've Got Mail reference in the beginning! I was wondering if either of you noticed that, when he was adrift on his raft, the whale stayed with him till he was safe. But was alerting him by splashing water on him twice. Once when Wilson fell in the water and then to wake him up to see the ship.

I love how they used the whale in this movie.. whales are known for protecting u from other predators, their sound alone can boil u underwater, and other whales will communicate in the area and flap their tails on the water which can be heard for miles, and predators stay away, I wouldn't be surprised if the whale stayed with him the whole time

Tom Hanks gave an interview with Charlie Rose about the origins of the story - one large inspiration was an interview Louis L'Amour gave where the interviewer knew he'd been shipwrecked on a small island in WW2 and kept asking about his experience, lost in the romanticism of it. And Mr. L'Amour finally said essentially 'look lady, those were the worst days of my life I thought I was going to die there.' And Tom said that her inability to get beyond her Robinson Crusoe romanticism he found an interesting perplexity.

I think I have said it before, but I will say it again...for a terrific Tom Hanks performance from 1990, check out Joe Versus the Volcano. The huge bonus is that you also get Meg Ryan playing multiple roles.

i really love about that movie, that there is no score/soundtrack until he leaves the island - the silence/isolation is so much more present on the screen with only sounds of the nature (waves, wind,...) - i would love both of you react to "Run Lola Run" and "Tucker & Dale vs. Evil "

Of all the great films by the legendary Robert Zemeckis, “Cast Away” is my favorite. It’s on the short list of my favorite films along with The Green Mile. The final scene with Tom Hanks and Helen Hunt is one of the most touching and heartbreaking in all film. This blu ray has and will always be part of my film collection.

It is important to note that the title of the movie is "Cast Away" not "Castaway" At the end of the movie, he survives and returns ... only to find out that his life has been Cast Away by everyone he knew that moved on without him

Whales are known to help guide boats that are adrift in the ocean in real life. There are many many reported cases of this. Some are on video. And I can say from first hand experience that dolphins love to swim with boats just for fun. Im a HUGE advocate for oceanlife health and happiness. Whales and dolphins are to be protected at all costs. They are mans best friend in the ocean.

So many really good Tom Hanks movies. Big, The Burbs, and A League of Their Own are really my favorites of his late 80s/early 90s work.

One of my all time favorite movies. I really appreciate that they had the courage to step away from the simple ending and go for something deeper. Also I would add that I want saw a reactor who lived on a pacific island react to this movie. When coconuts were falling onto the sand, he knew exactly what that sound was.

Hanks and Zemeckis did a promotional tour with the movie and stopped at several university film schools. One student asked what they thought was in that final package that he resisted the tempation of opening. Their answer: A solar powered satelite phone. Apparently the crew had a lot of time to debate stuff like that...

It's pretty amazing that Tom Hanks started in comedy. I first remember seeing him in the TV show Bosom Buddies, where two guys pretend to be women to get an apartment they could afford. He then went on to comedic films like Splash, Bachelor Party, The Money Pit, Dragnet, and Big. In the 90's he started doing more dramatic movies like A League of Their Own and Sleepless in Seattle, leading to his Oscar win for Philadelphia. From there he was a megastar.

The title of the movie "Cast Away" has 2 meanings. 1: he was a castaway on a random deserted island in the middle of nowhere, 2: the title name was split into 2 separate words "cast away" meaning thrown away, got rid of, etc etc. So he was a castaway but due to the events throughout the film he was also cast away. The package with the wings was a symbols to Tom Hanks character's humanity. So he didn't open it to give him a reason to live and to somehow get home. That's sorta what he said in the note when he delivered it to the house. Some say there was a loving note to the woman's "husband" with some of her husband's favorite foods in it and the note was saying something about here is a taste of home untill you return or something like that. Some say there was a waterproof satellite phone in it with a full charge but no one will ever know

What they never tell you is that after he makes the decision to go after Bettina, he asks her what was in the package and she says, "Just a solar powered satellite phone, water purifier, and some seeds." Great reaction!!

The running rumor is that in the package he never opened was a solar powered satellite phone. I like to think he went back to Bettina’s house at the end, who was played by county singer Lari White. Sadly she died back in 2018, I think, from cancer. RIP.

I love the way the Whale looked him in the eye as if to say you've come this far, don't give up now. Not many actors can make me sit through a 2 1/2 hour movie that primarily features them and make it seem like the film just started when it ends.

I think about the ending all the time. It's a bit like being deployed in war. You fight and fight to get back to a life that isn't there anymore. And you feel lost and directionless, forced to start a brand new life. You feel like you never made it home. Like you died out there.

One of the most beautiful movies ever! The situation is beyond definition, and to add the crossroads was a great touch. Represents perfectly what is our life and the whole journey

Chuck at the cross road clearly makes the choice to going back to the house of (Bettina) the artist women with the wings symbol on her truck. They are meant to be together. The movie has multiple clues to this.

Ok, Simone, George, I LOVE you guys. Your reaction is spot on, this is a MASTERPIECE of film making and acting and you guys make it new and fresh all over again. I love, love that you guys picks up the subtle clues of how different he has become after being marooned on a deserted island when he returned home. From the inability to sleep on a soft bed, his disregard of rain, his distaste over seafood.

Another Tom Hanks movie is "The Terminal" where he is trapped in an airport terminal which is loosely based on a real story. It was filmed at the now defuncted Mirabel airport in Montreal.

His plan wasn't really to just drift around on his raft. He saw that ship early on and may have seen more over the 4 years we don't see, either way it's a good bet that he's reasonably close to some kind of shipping lane, so all he needs to do is get close enough to be seen by a ship.

The joke after the movie came out was that the package with the wings had survival items inside it and he never opened that one.

I remember watching this in the theatres with my sons. My youngest at 6 cried and cried when Wilson was lost. I felt so bad for him. Loved your reactions!

I remember some people hating the ending, but I loved it. Sometimes people are in a situation where they realistically can't see anything to hope for or look forward to, and they give up, but the only way you'll have any chance of finding something to look forward to is to hang in there and keep plugging away at life. After I had open heart surgery, recovery was one of the most unrelentingly miserable times in my life, and considering the residual pain from the surgery and the long term limitations from the heart damage that necessitated the surgery, it was hard to stay motivated. However, because I can't sleep normally anymore, I went out before dawn to get my daily walk out of the way and ended up at Guatemalan bakery which was the only thing that was open as the sun came up. I bought some pan dulche, and because it looked like clear weather after several days of rain, I said to the bakery "It's looks like it's going to be a good day." He smiled and said "Any day you wake up is a good day." There's a lesson there.

Never thought in my life i would shed a tear for a man losing a volleyball..this film did such a great job just showing how important that ball was

I remember renting this movie, watching it, feeling the feels, and then putting it back in the box and realizing the title isn't Castaway... it's _Cast Away._

What i love about this is as soon as he is on the island there is no backing music, the only sound you hear is the sounds of the island which reinforces how alone he is.

During the crash we see the strap get caught on the wreckage. The red bag on the end of the strap, that tore lose, had the emergency gear (flare-gun, matches, signal mirror, etc.) inside it.

Granted, I’ve never been in a plane crash, so have no means of comparison, but the plane crash in this film is possibly the most ‘realistic’ plane crash ive seen in any film.

That plane crash was intense! That sudden scare of the band aid-to-"explosion" scene was even worse in a theater!

A couple bits of trivia: - After Chuck's rescue, you see the TV with the press conference. The gentleman speaking was actually FedEx founder and CEO Fred Smith. - Bettina was played by Lari White, who was also a country singer. She passed away from cancer in 2018.

20:17 - I spend months in dentist's chair, terrified, and this is the scene that I was forcing myself to remember. I used it to remind myself that I am so lucky to be doing this in an office, with painkillers and professionals. It helped...so thanks, Tom Hanks!

Great reaction guys. I felt the movie right along with you. There was a super bowl commercial depicting the delivery of that last package where he asks the resident, out of curiosity, what it contained. So the guy opens the box and says "Oh, not much" then proceeds to pull out a satellite phone, fire starting kit, flashlight, knife, seeds... LOL!

Apparently, this was also largely Tom Hanks' idea for a film: to do the "Stuck on an Island" plot, but make it super-real and serious. He also said his biggest mistakes was to diet largely on cheeseburgers for the weight gain at the beginning, saying it was the "sickest" he'd ever been. The year long hiatus was not only to get his weight down, but to grow out his hair and beard naturally (so that's no fake wig and beard; that's all Grizzly Hanks)

I saw this at the cinema when it was first released. On the theater screen & with the full surround sound, the plane crash scene was immersive and absolutely terrifying.

My daughter started watching this movie as I was going to work. I wouldn't give her any spoilers of course. I just told her "You're probably going to cry about something you never thought you'd cry about." She called me on work to ask "Were you talking about Wilson?" I nodded yes. Yeah baby girl, YES. WILSON.

I saw this movie in the theater, and while I was moved by the scene of Wilson floating away, I understood the humor of it and was laughing. But there were three women a few rows ahead of us that were openly sobbing at Hanks' "Wilson!" cries. At the time I was laughing at those women. But seeing this film again, years later, I get it.

Human beings evolved to recognize "agency" (living things) in the natural world because those things posed the greatest potential threat to us. If we hear a strange noise in the forest, we react VERY differently if we think it's a living thing (as opposed to a coconut). It's so instinctual that we react before even realizing what we're reacting to. This is one reason why humans began recognizing agency in inanimate things like the sun, clouds, the oceans, i.e. early mythical and religious stories.

Chuck (seeing Kelly for the first time in 4 years): So, let me get this straight... Kelly (gulps, steels herself for the emotional hammer to fall) Chuck: We have a pro football team now, but they're in Nashville? I always thought this was a hilarious tension breaker.

I don't know if you noticed but there was no accompanying music while he was on the island. The director wanted to enhance the feeling of utterly alone.

Great job. Tom Hanks crushed this. Tom got his start in Bosom Buddies where he dressed like a woman to be able to have a place to live. It was a comedy tv show. No one could have imagined.

Another Tom Hanks movie you should react to is "Sully". He plays an airline pilot, it's based on a true story and directed by Clint Eastwood.

It was shown in the very beginning that his character was a qualified sailor. That knowledge is what saved his life.

A great movie which shows how good an actor Tom Hanks is. I saw this at the cinema and it was an odd experience. A full cinema, and most of the time it was complete silence except for the sound of waves lapping on the shore, whilst everyone sat transfixed by what was happening to Tom.

If you were alone for four years, being surrounded by people would be pretty draining.

20:30 I had my tooth removed by a dentist and had access to antibiotics and painkillers, but the pain was at times almost unbearable, I thought I will go insane and I had a very strong urge to do something similar to get rid of the tooth myself. The toothpain is a B****, I really feel for the character here.

I love how there is no background music while he is on the island. As he looks back and sails away they start.

I absolutely love this channel and this movie. I lost my wife yrs ago which caused me to spend lots more time alone in the wilderness and so much rings true, in so many ways.I run a channel where I share what I have learned about nature and people over the years. Embarrassingly, I made a parody of this movie while I was.....spending the week in the woods..

I always thought that this is the kind of movie that suicidal people should see. Chuck was trapped in a place where there was literally nothing to live for. He lost everything he valued and had no future in sight. But after years of struggle, a sail randomly wandered towards him, and he managed to fight his way back to civilization. There was no returning to his former life, but the package he saved led him to another potential one. If he does end up w/ that woman at the end and perhaps eventually start a family, just think, that wouldn't have happened for them if it weren't for the plane crash. It's kinda similar to Forrest Gump's feather symbolism.

I just realized that I love how the movie ends (with him at a crossroad) because a little earlier in the movie he was describing to his friend how he had power over absolutely nothing, but it kinda seems like a crossroad is a situation in which you have power over where you go next.

I’ll never forget the first time I saw this movie. My family rented it and I watched it with my parents while I was soaking my hands in a giant bowl of this oatmeal stuff because I had an allergic reaction to poison ivy and the blisters were so bad that I couldn’t even make a fist or curl my fingers. If I had made a fist and some of the blisters popped then the oil in them would’ve caused the reaction to spread to any skin it touched. It was painful, itchy, and annoying as hell and I was all drugged up on medications to keep the reaction from getting any worse or causing my immune system to overreact. I think that was last time I had poison ivy. After that I got a lot more careful about looking out for it and I’ve pretty much avoided it entirely since then. But, it certainly made for a memorable experience when watching this movie for the first time.

I think it's ridiculously underrated. One of the deepest American films in the past few decades. Probably Hanks' best acting, too.

The writer of this film had trouble once he got to the part about being stranded on a desert island because he couldn't get into the headspace. So he actually spent several days on a desert island. Eventually he really did find an abandoned volley ball floating in the ocean and was so bored he started talking to it.
