My son was a freckled faced straw-haired four year old when it came out. All the neighborhood kids called him Home Alone for a while, and he would do the shocked hands up to the face thing. Most of the John Hughes' movies don't have many sympathetic adults. He really had a way to portray adults from a kid's perspective. George was spot on when he made the comment about Kevin seeing the old guy in the store and realizing he was seeing him from his perspective (not reality). That was John Hughes. The whole setup of Sixteen Candles is a girl's parents forgetting her birthday, much like in this one the parents forgetting Kevin. Hughes was an amazing writer.

The John Candy/Catherine O' Hara scenes were basically entirely improvised, which is why they're so absurd and genuinely hilarious - They were both part of the Canadian comedy scene coming up, and upon rewatching you can really tell that Catherine is doing a lot of "yes, and?" lines at Candy who is just having a blast (especially "...and these are songs?") By far my favorite part of the movie is their mini-adventure.

How is that possible? John Kramer would have to been born in 1950-ish and this must have taken place in 1990? Also he didn't "plan" to become a killer. He was a successful engineer that went loony after his wife miscarriaged and he failed to off himself. You could say that triggered his serial killer persona. That's why I've never understood the Jigsaw theory. The end of Rambo 5 is basically Home Alone on steroids so if we use our imagination Kevin could have grown up to be John Rambo too.

Adorable that you guys wonder if burglaries might be a thing of the past. If you're a small-time crook you might try to sell your ill-gotten gains at a pawn shop or on Craigslist or something. Since these guys do this all the time, they would most likely go through a "fence", an intermediary that deals in stolen goods.
@hamletksquid2702
@hamletksquid2702 2 года назад
Michael Moore's Bowling for Columbine has a section where he's talking to Canadians about burglaries, and the common opinion seems to be that kids will be kids. There's also a part where he opens people's unlocked doors in Toronto and walks into the house. Most people basically smile and say hello, and nobody shot him. It's a strange foreign country with ways different from our own.
@christopherlundgren1700
@christopherlundgren1700 2 года назад
@@hamletksquid2702 Yeah I never thought it was that remarkable that he was able to walk into people's houses, since it's pretty common for people to leave their door unlocked while they're still at home and awake, even in the US. I guess if you live in a really sketchy neighborhood, one might be more inclined to keep the door locked at all times. What's a lot more interesting about that scene, as you say, is how chill people were about him just walking in and saying hi. I did some political canvassing a few years ago, and while most people were perfectly pleasant, there were a few houses where I was actually threatened with violence just for being there and knocking on the door.
